Booked this hotel instead of several other 5 star properties based on the reviews on this web site and all the main travel agents giving it 4+ stars and rave reviews. Was very very disappointed! The hotel is old and dated, the staff never smile, the sunbed allocation system is terrible, the sunbeds are the most uncomfortable sunbeds in the world, the hotel rooms are very basic - the travel inns in the UK have more goign for them - even in the upgraded rooms. The location is great however the resort itself could only be recommended to karaoke lovers as all bars seem to offer this or a terrible entertainer. Few nice restaurants namely Promises and Olympus - give the China House a wide berth - after tasting our first course we cancelled the rest of our order and when we complained the manager just said it was our opinion and he didn't care! Finally don't be fooled into thinking the hotel has sunbeds on the beach - it doesn't if you want to go on the beach you have to pay (about £3 per day. worth doign though as the beach is lovely and gets you away from the people you are allocated to be surrounded by for the duration of your stay! When choosing your sunbed at the hotel don't be offended by the sunbed guy - he is rude to everyone!
don't be seduced to book this hotel on the good reviews it has received

I booked the Sunrise Beach Hotel based upon the great reviews I had read on this website. It had been regarded of very highly by many customers so my family and I expected it to be fantastic, however we were disappointed! Although the Hotel was OK we expected something of a different class but didn't receive it. The Hotel staff can be very rude (especially reception) and were not prepared to meet our requirements on a number of issues - considering the price we payed for this hotel we thought the standards were very low. The room we were allocated was old and tired. It was located directly next to the bar near the hotel and the loud music bellowed through the room all night making it impossible for my 2 year old son to get any sleep - the hotel were reluctant to change our room unless we payed an extra £200 to upgrade (the hotel was only half full so there was plenty of room!). The location is great - can't complain about that - - but beware if booking this hotel - its OK but i personally wouldn't go overboard.
Great Holiday

Just got back from sunrise beach this week great hotel.Rooms were clean as were the bathroom. We were given a room beach end of hotel third floor with a good view and you could not here any noise at night. Staff were freindly and the allocation of sunbeds is a excellent idea, pity other hotels dont follow suit.Breakfast has a good choice .If you book a flexidine when you are their they offer extra nights free so worth doing when arriving.September is a great time to go weather is great and mainly couples which suited us fine. Protaras has plenty of good restaurants Oscars being our favourite, good food and freindley waiters. Would i return to the Sunrise beach yes i certainly would it was the best hotel along the strip.
Great Location.........

Loved the location which was right on the beach. Room not great but a lovely view of the garden and the sea from our balcony. Breakfast was very nice, full range of bacon, eggs, tomatoes etc as well as toast, cereal, fruit and pancakes and waffles. Had lunch at the hotel most days and would highly recommend the kebabs that are cooked on a barbeque on the beach by the hotel staff. Evening entertainment in Protaras was particularly bad with nothing to do but the local “English” bars and pubs and the hotel entertainment was even worse! If Elvis impersonators are your thing then you will have a great time! Be warned - there are not many nice places to eat along the strip; some of the food was awful. We would recommend the Italiano Restorante which we ended up eating in most nights. Take a left when you come out of the hotel. We did also found a nice but pricey Japanese restaurant in Eden Square and one evening we took a taxi into Ayia Napa, which had far better nightlife (clubs etc). One other warning, I had my sunglasses stolen from the breakfast table so be careful not to leave anything unattended. On weekends the beach gets quite crowded with locals who are not all exactly friendly. However the pool was really nice and as we had allocated sun loungers with sea view we tended to stay on them rather than venture to the beach. The guy that deals with allocating the sun loungers was very grumpy and would not allow us to move to the pool area despite repeated promises. We would go back for a relaxing holiday as the weather was amazing and when you know where to eat the food was good too.
Spot On!

When we arrived... bit disappointed with first impression from exterior of hotel and foyer was unimpressive. Arrived at 13.00 - room not ready, had to wait 30 mins. Booked side sea view and were pleased with room on top floor, unfortunately missed sun in the evening on this side. Ideally ask for room on pool side to get sun on balcony in evening. Room was a good standard - new carpet, quite spacious, plenty of hangers. Fridge in room already which we kept - handy for cold drinks etc. Key available from reception. Sun bed allocation - if you wanted one by the pool you'd better be staying for 2 weeks as there seemed to be a lengthy wait. We arrived on Saturday and were told we could get one on the Wednesday near the pool but practically under the showers so we declined and stayed on the lawn area. It was breezier there anyway with less children so suited us. The hotel is on the beach so you could choose between pool or sea if you wanted a dip. Beach very busy at weekend and non-residents could pay to use hotel loungers also making hotel busier and noisier. Fresh beach towel every day - good size too. Pool area not as large as it looks in brochure photos however a fair size and with garden area allowed more space between loungers than other hotels we saw in vicinity. Bar staff could have been friendlier especially when you asked for ice to take to your room - get an ice machine then - it is supposed to be a 4 star hotel. Reception staff very accommodating re: late check out. Night life:- London prices and then some. Lots of bars and restaurants to choose from, plenty of live entertainment - Elvis, (more than once!), Kylie, Abba, Tom Jones etc. Loved it! Hotel right on "strip" excellent location for wandering between bars. We liked Rockerfellas and Love Boat. Ate in Diva restaurant at far end of strip - very good. Hotel entertainment poor - always seemed to be desserted when we looked and this was peak season. They encourage you to eat in hotel if you're on B & B package but we never did. Breakfast was good though - buffet style - plenty of choice. All in all we'd definitely go back to Protaras as we loved the resort - very "English!" and we really enjoyed staying at the Sunrise Beach BUT for the price we paid were expecting a slightly smarter hotel and there are others to try on the same beach.
Lovely hotel, disappointing rooms
from dudette2006
My boyfriend and I had a week at the Sunrise Beach Hotel in Protaras. I picked the hotel on the reviews I had read on this site. The hotel was as good as had been said, however, I think the hotel was let down by the rooms. There was nothing obviously wrong with the rooms - it was just very dated, the carpets were not very clean and the bed was quite uncomfortable, which was a shame. The bathroom was really not very nice, and I don't think it was up to a 4* standard. It was quite dark, and when we had a shower- water leaked onto the floor. We managed to get a mini bar thing by saying we wanted it - and then taking out all the original stuff and filling it with our bottles of water which we bought from the supermarket. The hotel was very nice apart from the rooms - breakfast was good, a good range of food to choose from and we could eat outside which was nice. The pool was lovely, it was probably the best part about the hotel, after two days we managed to get sun beds by the pool, and I would defiantly recommend that - being just by the pool was so nice. The pool was never really too busy, maybe this was because we came in June, but there weren’t too many kids either - which was better for us. The hotel is just on the strip - very convenient for local restaurants - we would recommend Oscar's Steak House, It is clearly the nicest restaurant in Protaras, amazing steaks and other food too. Johnny the waiter there is very friendly. Entertainment by the pool is good - there was always something going on. I don't think I’d recommend going to the hotel in really busy times - such as July and august because I think it'll get packed out in the resort - the beach outside the hotel was really busy on the Saturday just before we left. The resort itself - I must warn you, If you don't like the sound of cheesy English themed pubs and mc Donald’s and pizza hut as a part of your holiday - don't go to Protaras!!! It's very very English, the Cypriot people are very nice too but it is very English resort which could be seen as cheesy to many people. We were a bit doubtful when we turned up - we thought we'd just found England in the sun, but actually ended up really enjoying the resort!! The exchange rate in the hotel is bad - get money changed in the town. Things are expensive - especially water sports and magazines from England - stock up on mags before hand - Heat is like £2.45 (Cyprus pounds) which is about £3.20 English. Another recommendation - Eden Square Cocktail bar - happy hour between 5 and 9 £1 cocktails which are really nice!! and it's a good bar too, looks expensive but it's not! just opposite the hotel. Good hotel for relaxing - resort for families and couples.
Good holiday but hotel not as good as expected
from KatieRugby
After reading all the reviews on the Sunrise Beach hotel we were expecting an amazing hotel so were slightly disappointed when we got to our room which was very dated and the carpet had definitely seen better days. When walking along the corridor some mornings and the maids were in other rooms cleaning we could see some rooms had much newer carpet and looked smarter! We were also very disappointed when we paid a huge amount of money to hire the rubbish fridge in our room. If you had it as a mini bar it was free but you could not even store your own water in there so we paid over £50 to hire it for 2 weeks so we could have cold water. There was also only 1 plug socket in the room which had the TV plug in it so you constantly had to take that out to plug in iron, hair straightners etc which was bit inconveninet as hard to get to. Apart from those niggles we had a great holiday and allocating the sunbeds to you for your whole stay was perfect but if only everyonehad known about this. We had a couple of occasions when a particular couple tried to save our loungers with their towels down and one morning they confronted us when removing them but we had to tell them about the system. Luckily though we got loungers by the pool as I didn't fancy ones on the grass as these were away from the pool and many insects around. Breakfasts were pretty good too with lovely scrambled egg and yummy pancakes which if you watched out for when he had just cooked them you could get them nice and warm. The choice of restaurants in the resort was really good and we particularly liked Georgias which if you go out of the hotel you need to turn right and it is just up past the fountain. I had many kleftikos and theirs was the best and towards our last nights we tried their steaks which were melt in the mouth tender. Only wish we had gone there a few more nights. Romeos Greek nights on Wed and Suns are also worth going to as you get good music and dancing while you eat. We hired a car and went to Cape Greko, Paralimni (we didn't think much of this) and then the Troodos Mountains which were good but took a long time to get to (about 2 1/2 hours). Not as scenic as Kefalonia though we found. So we had a lovely relaxing holiday and the weather was peferct every day but my husband did pick up an ear infection towards the end and we heard of many other kids and adults who had too so think it must have been the pool. He is still off work with it now!
Fantastic Holiday/Wedding
from annella
The Sunrise Beach Hotel is beautiful hotel situated right on the cleanest sandy beach you could wish for,iIts grounds are well cared for, and the flowers gorgeous. As you can see I rate this hotel highly. We went at the begining of May 2006 and whilst we were there my daughter got married, not at this hotel but one further up the coast. We went with Olympic Holidays and the wedding coordinator Karen was fantastic, from day one she took the weight off our shoulders and organised a beautiful wedding. She understood what my daughter and her fiance wanted and provided it with a smile. The holiday itself was great, the food at the hotel was very good, only moan, it insisted on having themed nights ie Mexican food and whilst most were OK we much prefered the buffet nights when the choice and food was very good. Breakfasts were good with a great choice and nice hot food. The pool was great and the fantasic thing about this hotel was the way they allocated you your sunbeds to your room no. and they were yours for your whole holiday.WELL DONE Sunrise beach for this brillant service. All in all a fantastic hotel where the staff are friendly and helpful, beautiful surroundings right next to the beach and a short walk to the shops ect. PS Just a bit of a downer for people with small chlidren, not much entertainment in the way of childrens clubs ect, the staff try but could do with some more equipment and help.
A lovely, relaxing time

I have just come back from 7 days at the Sunrise beach. I was with my husband and 13 year old son. We went on the strength of these reviews and weren't disappointed! The staff were very friendly and polite. They allocate your sunbeds for the week and we were originally sited on the grass area but asked to change to the pool. The gentleman who allocates the beds came to us on the second day and said we could move but decided to stay where we were as there was a lovely breeze and it was quieter where we were. The pool is immaculately clean, the sunbeds comfortable and you get clean pool towels daily. I read that the beds were hard but we all agreed they were sooooo comfortable! I agree that the rooms are a little dated but they are spotless and comfortable, the rooms (we had 2 inter-connecting) were always cleaned by the time we returned from breakfast. The beach is also immaculate and the sea safe and clear. Breakfast is delicious, everything is so fresh and the variety incredible....something for everyone. We ate in the hotel one night and it was wonderful, I really wished we'd taken the flexi-dine option where you get dinner 3 or 4 nights per week. The situation is excellent, there are plenty of good restaurants within a few minutes walk and a supermarket just outside the hotel that do wonderful frappucinos that you can take back and have by the pool! Not much more to say really except that both my husband and I are ex airline crew and used to 5* accomodation and, as a family we are well-travelled. This hotel is rated 4* and as holiday accomodation goes I think it lives up to it. We will definitely go back - it's so convenient, friendly and clean!
Great location and pool, but....

Just got back from a 7 days vacation and chose this hotel partly based on the reviews on this site. First the good stuff! location i super! Right on the beach and in the center of town. Pool area is great with a large pool and nice garden and green areas. Lots of beautiful flowers. All the public areas are very clean and well taken care of. The staff very friendly with the exeption of one man in the reception, he has been mentioned before...not a smile to be seen! Breakfast plenty and nice, never tried the hotel restaurant because very expensive! Rooms very old 80´s style but very clean! They allocate u sunbeds so u dont have to get up and fight for sunbeds, u keep the same one during your whole stay! Now the bad.... The beds are terrible, very hard! The only 2 english speaking channels were BBC world and Bloomberg financial news...boring to say the least.... Bathroom clean with new towels everyday but we had a problem with water dripping from the ceiling when ever the upstairs room took a shower. We could not leave anything in the bathroom because of this. Told the reception right away..nothing happened so we adressed the problem again since it got worse and again we were ignored! Airconditioning works like this, arctic cold or...sahara hot.... For some great food and service, visit Oscar steakhouse. To get there u take a right turn leaving the hotel and walk for a while, its on the left side of the strip! Enjoy!! There is also an Italian restaurant if u take the left leaving the resort that makes an awsome pizza!! It´s called Italiano ristorante. To sum it up we had a great holiday and would we go back? Probably not, but not beacause of the hotel or the town but because we want to see other places of the world! This hotel is great for children, lots of them there and they seemed to enjoy themselves! If u want high standards for the room we would not advice u to stay here, but if u want the great location and pool then its for u!
