We have stayed at the brilliant...

Jul 2008,  P Mangan

We have stayed at the brilliant appartments three times over the last 12 years or so. The last time we stayed we noticed it was going downhill. We went to Cyprus this year and stayed in a private villa but had a wander round the Brilliant to see how it was faring. It has unfortunately gone downhill even more. The general upkeep of the building is poor and it looks dirty and in need to repair. Its a real shame as we had some really good memories of a very well run clean appartment block - we had a cup of tea and the milk was sour- when complained told it was a fresh carton! so we must be wrong. There are far nicer appartments in protaris to stay and would give the Brilliant a miss until they change the manager, staff and do some refurbishment work

When we arrived at the Brilliant all...
6 / 10
Jul 2008, Miss N Simons

When we arrived at the Brilliant all we wanted to do after a long nights travelling was to lay our heads down and get some sleep, but unfortunately the bed sheets were not clean and there were hairs on the sheets and on the floor of the bathroom, which incidently stayed there throughout the duration of our two week holiday.
The kitchenette was not as equiped as it should have been, and I had to ask for a kettle and toaster for our room at 5am in the morning. The reception staff were always very polite and helpful, which is more than can be said for the restuarant/bar staff. We only ever eat the once at the hotel, as the food was not very appetising and the waiter annoyed us somewhat when my daughter was told that the reason for her chicken being so tough and unedible was that she did not eat it fast enough!
The plates and cutlery in our apartment were not that clean either when we arrived, infact some pieces of cutlery had rust patches on them so you could obviously taste the metal... hence the reason why we eat out most of the time!
The rooms were cleaned nearly everyday and towels were changed about 3 times a week. Notice how I said "changed" and not replaced with clean ones! The condidtion of the apartment was not particulary great, the bathroom was old and in need of a lick of paint and some fresh tiles and maybe even a thorough clean.
The bedroom had some weird black substance growing on the wall which staff had obviously tried to cover up with some white powder to disguise it.
The internet service which is down in the reception area and cost 1 euro for 5 mins doesnt even seem to be connected, as not one of our family members received emails we had sent whilst there! Again there was a pool table which I think should have been free to use esecially in the evenings when the kids had nothing else to do cost 1 euro a game.
The entertainment staff there were the only good thing about the hotel, they both made a real effort to get both the adults and children involved in activities such as water polo, darts, quiz nights etc.
The pool and outside area of the hotel could also have been a lot cleaner. Infact one night when the hotel was holding a BBQ, one staff member threw some chlorine straight into the swimming pool after complaints from guests staying at the hotel about the pool water not being clean. Obviously this needed to have been correctly put through the water filters to the pool , so it wasn't suprising that the wind carried it straight to the BBQ area where families were gathered awaiting to be fed.... No wonder there was an uproar of angry guests who had inhaled the chemicals and suffered burns and nose bleeds as a result of it.
Anyway, we did not let the NOT SO Brilliant Hotel, spoil our holiday and hope to go back next year and go 5*.

Oct 2007, Miss Kirstie Donnelly

Just back from a week’s stay at the brilliant. Visited with my mum gran and cousin.
Hotel rooms very big but I think this was because our rooms were on the corner of the building.
Air-con kept us cool although you weren't able to leave it on while you weren't in your room as the key was required for the electricity in the room.
Large enough pool with a very deep end which was good, shallow end was ideal for smaller children however my gran did manage to slip in it which was very funny!!
Found my favourite snack - Tnazkini (or something) you must try it!!
Would definitely return to the brilliant at the same time next year as the weather was excellent for October and the pool wasn't overcrowded.

Oct 2007, Mr J Roy

These apartments are as the name says BRILLIANT. The staff could not be more friendly or helpful. From gran and grandad to a ten year old we will be returning. The rooms are spotless the food good and the prices reasonable. They are also in a quiet area and the free air conditioning is great. Panicos, Sava and Micheal at the bar make everyone welcome and join in all the fun. Definitely a place to return to.

Just returned after 2 very hot weeks...

Jul 2007, Mr Paul Dunn

Just returned after 2 very hot weeks at the Brilliant. This is our second stay here, and we will return. The staff are always friendly/helpful. The rooms are very spacious, and kept clean. Towels are changed every 2 days.
Rooms are on 3 levels, we would not enjoy a room on the ground floor as these lead out onto poolside area and you feel you would need to lock door each time, always request an upper room, then you have piece of mind when leaving balcony doors open.
A varied menu is available from the poolside bar with very reasonable prices. The only downside to the Brilliant was, far too many sun loungers around the pool giving the feeling of being sat next to others and not enough parasols. With this in mind, we went to the beach each day.
The beaches locally are very good, water is safe and very clear, although a bit rocky in places but this works well for snorkelling. Plenty of water sports available and boat trips to view Famagusta (would recommend a tour/trip) unable to take photo's of the 'Ghost Town though.
Ample places to eat on the main strip (only a short walk away) would recommend the Red Indian or Parko, these are either end of the strip. Evening entertainment is good, especially if you love Elvis....a good show is put on at the Rockerfellas bar on Wednesday/Saturday by a very good Elvis soundalike, other nights at Rockerfellers you can watch Jimmy Spender who sings almost anything.
As I said, we will go back.

Jun 2007, Mrs T A Mantle

Have just spent 2 lovely weeks at the brilliant apartments and what can I say; I didn’t walk into the apartment and think wow but they were well equipped and very clean.
The wardrobe space was rubbish so for a family of 4 there were clothes everywhere but this is honestly the only fault with the place. The pool area was fantastic the bar staff were fantastic and protaras itself was great.
The maid service was very good. You do get a welcome pack which we did pay for but after shopping around a bit it does work out expensive for what you get in it.
The best place we found to eat there was definitely the Flintstones and Pete the owner will make you feel very welcome.
As a few people have said Cyprus is getting expensive but the apartments and the resort are definitely places we will go to again.

May 2007, Mrs C Martin

We have just returned from our holiday in the Brilliant apartments, and are delighted to say we loved them! And the famous Panicos is still there and still wonderful!
We found the apartments were spotless! We had a pool view and enjoyed our breakfast on the balcony every morning.
Fig Tree Bay is beautiful and the cafes are very good, it's nice to have a frappe overlooking the beach!
You must try Anatolis restaurant on the main road past McDonalds and the Sphinx bar, the food is excellent and the waiters run round constantly!
Argo Travel rep was a waste of time! No communication when the transfers late both ways! And no conversation at all during transfer! Flight awful, delayed both ways and very cramped, even a sardine would complain!

Can not say anything bad about this hotel. We went with 20 friends on our honey moon and to a friends wedding and it was fantastic.
Our little boy had the time of his life. We were there for 2 weeks and he was not bored at all. The staff were very friendly and the rooms were lovely and spacious.
Would definitely recommend and will be visiting again.

Just returned from 2 weeks stay in...
9 / 10
Oct 2006, Mr D Green

Just returned from 2 weeks stay in the hotel brilliant, and it is.
The rooms are quite spacious and very clean as is the whole hotel, we went self catering and room came with usual pots, pans, toaster, kettle etc. rooms are cleaned everyday and sheets/towels every other day, also the air conditioning is of high standard and kept the room a comfortable cool. Staff at the hotel are very pleasant and helpful (which was the case with all the Cypriots we met).
The hotel is situated in a great spot about 5mins walk in to the heart of the Protaras strip and about 7mins to the wonderful beeches and great water sports. The nightlife on the strip is your usual mix of bars and restaurants more suited for couples/families.
Travelling around Cyprus by taxi can be very expensive as the drivers seem to make the fares up, we found the local bus service the cheapest at just 80cents per person or you can hire a car from about £15 onwards.
Overall we had a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday in Protaras, but cant help feeling Cyprus is pricing itself out of the market as it’s getting more expensive each time we visit.

I went for a last minute holiday with...
9 / 10
Sep 2006, Miss J Franklin

I went for a last minute holiday with my boyfriend. We are not clubby people but like bars and good restaurants. I checked reviews of the Brilliant Apartments...all of which were very good or excellent, so we booked.
Great choice! Service with a smile, 24 hour reception, spacious well kept pool area with loads of sun loungers (was however September), main strip full of bars, supermarkets, clothes and jewellery shops (silver is very nice), restaurants and even Mc D's (which had Greek selection...recommended), beach views, spacious self-catering apartments with balcony, on-site tour rep, meet and greet Thomson airport service and more.
The beach is lovely! Tons of cheap water sports, lots of beachside hotels (including Sandy Beach, which looked amazing) where you can get snacks/drink, clear soft yellow sand, aqua blue clear water that is great for swimming. There are two water sports companies, both great although some have the same activities cheaper than the other e.g. the £2cyp per person glass bottom boat ride that takes you to Famagusta and allows you to dive/swim in the ocean...GREAT!!
All the shops have absolutely every item you may need so don't panic about forgetting things. Supermarkets are great. I advise buy bulk water and fresh rolls….make great cheap lunches. The shopping is endless and you can get some really great jewellery, clothes, accessories and general tourist gifts. Options and Pharmacies are popular too. Do walk to the end of the strip (both ends). The Mc D's end goes on to another small strip where a huge American Diner has great desserts and is open very late. There is also the Ayios Elias church seen on top of a hill...there are 100 steps and they are well worth the effort. What a beautiful location and do note...you can go in!
Thomson day trips although great can be very pricey. You can find lots of tour organised shops on the strip offering exactly the same tour for sometimes half the price. I recommend the Jeep tour to Kykos Monastery and the mountains...what beautiful scenery and you stop at a waterfall, Lefkara (town for silver and lace…..so have money to shop) and many other must see points of Cyprus. I wouldn't advise the Ayia Napa water park, we didn’t go but if you have done Florida there is no comparison (from what we saw).
The exchange rates are very good too if you run low on cash but they do charge commission. The bar in Eden Square (which is down the hill from the apartments, bit steep for those who may struggle but so easy to access) has great music, is very chilled and has £1cyp cocktails from 5pm - 9pm. Robin Hood is one of the MANY karaoke bars but so great and has the best Elvis impersonator on the strip. Friends bar which shows non-stop shows is also well-worth a visit but food not great at all. Nicholas Taverna was very nice and gave a free dish on the side and so is the Mexican in Eden Square.
The apartment had a small bathroom (with a little rust), huge kitchen/living room with 2 double sofa beds and the main room 2 single beds put together (not the most comfortable). All is simple but comfortable and clean! Maid service was great. The food at the apartments is not great but handy. Local buses run from outside and on the main strip taking you all over Cyprus. Weather was gorgeous and staff are so helpful and friendly from the get go.
There are many regulars to the apartments for as long as 20 years, which says a lot and the kids LOVE the pool area. The only negative is that if going for a week as we did (not long enough) you don't get to experience enough of traditional Cyprus as it is a touristy part but longer would allow you to explore more. On the whole go book!
