loved it!
from ollie_p
I recently went to new york on a college trip and for the price i was absolutely stunned at how nice it was. Im from the UK an have stayed in some very grotty and more pricey hostel's but this one tops the lot. I got put in a 6 person dorm with other lads from my college and it was very spacious with a large bathroom. There was a complimentary breackfast each morning which fitted the bill but when we found ourselves wanting something richer we found this lovely diner near herald square called jimmys. The area was very well positioned only 2...

Squishy! but good location
from AnAussieCanuck
My boyfriend and I have decided to put this into good/not so good format. We’re both fairly tall, he is 6ft and I’m 5.8” and we’re both 29 years old. Good: -The area was ok, not up market at all. Right near Madison Square Gardens, Penn Station (near all local and regional trains and subway) and the Empire State Building. -Free delivery pizza on Tues and Thurs (margerita only – get there before 6pm). -Bathroom was clean -Lockers are available in the foyer for $3/4 USD per 24hrs – we found that very...

Great Location, Tons of Hidden Costs
from iprocure2k3
OK, I've stayed in hostels all over the world so you can get a sense of my experience as I review this hostel. Positivies: Great location, next to Penn Station in Midtown, subway 2 blocks away, and lots of restaurants and a couple of bars near by. Negatives: Hidden Costs - Be warned that Tax is not included in the price of the room. There are no lockers in the rooms, so you have to use one of the lockers in the lobby and that costs $4/day. Cleanliness - although the bed/sheets were clean, the bathroom was not all that great...

Spotless, kinda ugly, full o' action.
from lyrebird
Popular place, obviously. Tons of backpackers. Right in midtown but west. Walk anywhere. They have these lockers that you can put big bags in for a day. I stayed in a private room. It was more expensive than Larchmont Hotel (better) and Hotel 17 (WAY better) but it served its purpose. I was in a small room (but not tiny) with two metal bunks and some ugly (but clean) carpet. The room and bedding was spotless. So much so that it smelled of bleach. So was the in-room bathroom. The tv was almost unwatchable as it was the kind you only see...

Great location and value
from A TripAdvisor Member
Was in a mixed 8 bed dorm and loved it. The bathroom was small but that didnt stop me showering! no a/c so room bit hot but opened window. Reception looked after my valuble and suitcase went underbed. The location was awesome. Right near Empire state and a nice 10 minute walk to broadway. so much to see. This place was great value for money and breakfast was good too!
NOT the greatest...look around and compare before you make reservations!

There are pros & cons to this hostel: Pros: 1. Each room has own private bathroom. Bathrooms are VERY TINY! Had to hunch over the toilet in order to use the sink. This hostel does provide soap and towels (although for guests who stay longer than two days, towels are not changed every day! So find a good place in the room to store your towel, or else the cleaning lady takes your towel away and at times forgets to give you another one.) 2. Hostel provides linens and a pillow. Linens are a bed sheet and a thin blanket....

Management response from NYCHostelConnection
We are glad that you liked some aspects of the hostel such as the location and the breakfast .
As far as the noise complaint. Unfortunately this is part of New York City (the city that never sleeps). Being in such a great location also means a lot of noise and unfortunately that is a problem no matter where you are staying.
Your complaint about the staff comes as a suprise. We often get compliments about how polite and helpful our staff is. We would like to hear more about your experience and what happened so we can figure out why you had such a negative interaction with the staff.
We also always lock our front door at night. During this time, you must show your key in order to be let in.
If you have any further questions please contact us.
Thank you,
Manhattan Inn Staff
Good value for money but noisy!
from spoonygirl
I stayed at the Manhattan Inn Hostel for a whooping 18 nights, when I moved to NY and was on a waiting list for permanent accomodation... Have spent a lot of time in European hostels, and felt this was a good little place if you're on a budget in pricey NYC. The rooms are clean but small - I was in a 4 bed dorm, which was very cramped when fully occupied! As I was working, my schedule meant I was first up most days, so got first dibs on the tiny bathroom. Seeing as I was calling the dorm "home" for a while, I really appreciated having...

Very small!
from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in the hostel with three friends, so that we could have a dorm room without having to share with a stranger. It was fortunate that we knew each other so well, because the room was so small. It had two bunk beds and a table, it felt very cramped! It turned out that a double room was the same size as ours! Whilst we were there our toliet didnt work very well, and at one point overflowed! we did complain but were made to feel that it was our fault by the managment (although the other staff were very friendly). The breakfast room...

A decent hostel in a superb location
from AJQ
My girfriend and I stayed at the Manhattan inn for 5 days. The hostel was clean but there was a very small kitchen/ dining area which became very crowded in the mornings and the staff were helpful if not enthusiastically so. Be sure to bring ear plugs with you ! The hostel is not noisy but you can very much hear the whole of 8th Avenue ! Location is superb. Don't bother going anywhere west of the hostel unless you are going to the Intrepid museum which I recommend. Penn station is 5 minutes walk away and the Chelsea district (just a block...

Not bad considering the price
from griz
My main reason for booking this hostel was the price. For an average $35 per night in New York, it's not bad. Each room has its own bathroom and tv, which is great if you're lucky to get your own private room rather than a dorm. Dorms has 6 beds and were really tight for space. It never seemed to be enough air, so despite being cool outside, its was always stuffy in the rooms. The location was pretty good (around 8 blocks from 42 St) and naturally you just keep your wits about you when walking the streets at night. Penn Station was a...
