Le Marquis Hotel

This is my second stay here. (I stayed once under the previous name, Le Marquis -- same management). The hotel property itself isn't bad. The rooms are modern enough, average size for NYC rooms. Decor tries to be hip, but is only really just contemporary. They provide free high-speed (wired) access in the rooms, and "direct-dial" inward phone numbers to your room. We wife and I stayed at Hotel Chandler, 3 days in the beginning of June 2005. After reading reviews of the Hotel on TripAdvisor, we were a bit anxious upon arrival. We had booked our room at the Chandler Hotel through a Norwegian Travel Agency. They could not offer a De Luxe room, only Superior rooms. One month upon arrival, I contacted the hotel directly, and asked if I could pay for an upgrade to a De Luxe room. The manager asked my to take up the question upon arrival. Nice hotel, friedly staff, they even upgred me to a larger room, but about 10pm I couldn't smell any but something like greasy exhaust, then I looked out the window below and there were many of kitchen vents... explains the odors... Hotel price are always going up in NYC , this is a good hotel for the price. .... but the grease smell just before bed... I wasn't too happy.

The hotel is a decent hotel, small rooms, but there are nice enough appointments. However, I feel cheated...last August I made a reservation for Dec 15 or so, for a company Xmas party. The person taking the reservation made it for Sept 15 (or so), took the credit card deposit and the hotel charged me when...surprise...I didn't show up for the Sept 15 reservation. Of course, the clerk heard Sept 15...but even with that, management has steadfastly refused or ignored every request for seriously considering a refund of the Sept charge, which... more

My partner and I recently stayed at this hotel over Valentine's weekend. It was a last minute decision to go to NYC, so I couldn't be too picky on where we stayed or how much to spent; however, I wanted to be little conservative because it was a short trip. I was excited when the reservation agent quoted a decent price for NY and even offered me an upgrade after a delightful conversation. The wife and I had a brilliant time at Le Marquis (Hotel Chandler). The room is quite small but what do you expect in New York. It is brilliantly placed for getting around the city with the subway being a 5 min walk away. The breakfast is good although I wouldn't have paid for it if it wasn't free with our package holiday, I think it was about $15 being a British tourist I'd expect a banquette for that but it is not the case, like I said it was free on our trip. Well, the hotel looks as nice in reality as it looks on the pictures. Except for when you get a back room with a view of the opposite wall and a filthy backyard. The staff was reasonably friendly and the rooms looked clean. The cockroaches didn't mind that though. They were there anyway.

I stayed at Le Marquis (as it then was) for 3 nights in June 04, and will definitely stay there again on my next trip to NYC, although may well splurge for the larger room next time. This is a hard hotel to review. There isn't really anything wrong, but I just didn't find anything about it that would make me want to go back, there are much better options right around the corner. The hotel is trying very hard to be hip, but seems to miss the details. The music in the lobby is so overpowering I don't know how the staff can stand to be there all day. I have to disagree about the reviewer who claimed the neighborhood was "ghetto." I think the location is ideal--a short and cheap cab ride to uptown or downtown, easy access to La Guardia, and away from the Times Square madness (to me that's a plus). It's not tourist mecca, but a real NYC neighborhood. Rooms were tiny but comfortable, with an excellent bed.
