Ideally situated hotel around the corner from the Empire State and Macys and practically on Broadway. For the price, we found the hotel to be very good value for money. The hotel is very clean and all the staff were friendly and helpful. There is a good selection available... more

Satisfied Customer
Stayed here about a week ago and had a great time. I arrived early in the morning, and even though check in isn't until afternoon, they had my room ready and I was able to get in with no problems. The staff was helpful, and if they didn't know the answer to my questions, they went out of their way to find it. I was very happy with the location. So close to 34th St. Penn Station, which made it easy to get around. The room was small, but when you visit New York, who cares? You don't stay there anyway. It was still comfortable and clean. The complementary breakfast was a good way to get the day started. Nothing heavy, which leaves room for some real New York eats. Overall, I thought this place was great. The price was reasonable, but the location is what makes this place worth staying at. I'd stay here again and would also recommend this place to others.
Nice Place To Stay!
I stayed at the Metro Hotel the first of Oct. 2004 and enjoyed my stay. We had a room with double bed which was larger than most New York hotels and was very quiet. The location is perfect in midtown and the view from the roof top terrace is a great way to wind the day down. All renovated, everything worked fine. The only downside is the location is in Midtown - I would have liked a more neighborhood feel to it. For the price and value, it's a good deal. The complementary coffee and breakfast was wonderful. The staff offered good suggestions on local places to eat which were good. The beds were so-so but I could sleep well on them at night. I would stay here again. Have fun in Manhattan!
Excellent service
We chose to spend 8 days at the Metro based on the reviews we read about this Hotel. They are all correct. The staff go beyond anything that could be desired to make your stay pleasant and comfortable. The rooftop bar with it's views of the Empire State Building is a great bonus. The 10% reduction we received at the Metro Grill as residents in the Hotel was very handy as we dined there every night and found the service there equally charming.
Good Value, great location
Located between 5th and 6th Ave, this hotel has a great location. Easy walk to Times Square to the north and Greenwich Village to the south. Room was small but clean. Staff very attentive and helpful. Nice open-air rooftop bar to have late night drink and a nice view of the Empire State Building. We didn't spend much time in the room and chose this hotel for location and price. Pricier hotels perhaps are more spacious but we don't spend much time in the room. Complimentary continental breakfast is adequate in a very comfortable lounge area. Small but adequate fitness area on penthouse for those who want to lift some weights or do some treadmilling. Staff very helpful in supplying maps and giving directions. This hotel attracts a lot of European tourists who I suspect get the scoop from the internet. We would definitely stay there again because of the location. My wife is usually fussier than me about hotels and she would like to return there. We booked on Orbitz for around $200/might for a Friday, Saturday and Sunday stay. Also, right around the corner is a 24 hour convenience store which is really convenient. Stocks not only food but band-aids etc and all the little things you might need last minute.
Less $$$ = Less Comfort
The bad first - when my fiance' and I arrived, they said they only had a two-bed room available, which turned out to be two, twin, box spring beds. I believe the room had a broken window because all night, every night, we heard trucks loading and unloading, and sirens, and honking. There also was an unusual stink by one of the beds and the TV channels did not come in clearly. The good- they have nice, clean, marble showers (no tub). The rooms have good air-conditioning/heaters that make the temp in the room comfortable. They have free coffee downstairs all day. Besides all the delivery trucks, it is in a fairly good location next to subs and easy walking distance to touristy spots. This room was OK if you don't plan to be in it for long periods.
Great Value and Location
Bottom line: We had an above average experience and would stay here again. We stayed here based on the reviews on this site and the price. For a hotel in Manhattan, the price can't be beat. I was leery of the room size, but when we entered a good sized room with 2 twins for my wife, our 2 yr. old and myself, I was relieved. We simply shoved the 2 twin beds together. However, this room was facing the street and was on the 8th floor. NYC is truly the city that never sleeps. After the 2nd night we purchased ear plugs. Our 2 year old had no problems sleeping. The lighting in the room was dim due to the fluorescent bulbs. The staff was friendly if you engaged them. They didn't greet you nightly as you came walking in, however, if you greeted them they would certainly respond in kind. The lady who stocked the breakfast area was extremely warm and friendly and engaged our daughter everyday. The hotel lobby, breakfast area and adjoining sitting room were all well appointed. We had one dinner in the restaurant and it was excellent. The wait staff there was also very friendly and gave us advice on where else to go.
Nothing special
We stayed here three nights in August. We found the staff quite unfriendly, often we were ignored when entering the hotel. I would expect a hello from reception staff when guests are returning to their rooms. Rooms are ok, our room had a leaky tap. They seem a bit grey and sad, they need a little brightenning I think. Breakfast was satisfactory, nothing special. Internet access, wireless and free. Thats's it. I wouldn't return, its was just too bland for me.
The Window Fell out!!
We went to this hotel in 2003 as part of our Honeymoon. It was advertised in the Virgin brochure and looked very good value for money and a great location. We arrived late in the evening after having a long flight from LA and was ready for bed. The reception look very nice and the staff equally helpful and nice, although I was told the hotel manager was the person on reception. We were given our keys and made our way up to our room. We were on the 12th floor and I thought brilliant we will have some peace and should have a good view. What a mistake of thinking that!!! When we got in to our pokey room that you couldn't swing a cat in, I thought we were out on the street, lorries below were loading up and banging their doors closed, their brakes sweaking loudly every 5 mins. I thought the window was open and asked my husband to close it. It was open at the top, my husband tried to close it but it was stuck. He asked me to help, we both tried pushing the window up but the window fell out of the frame and crashed down onto the air conditioning unit!!! The frame was so heavy he couldn't put it back in, luckily the window fell in towards us and not out onto the street!!! I rang down to reception and told them their window had fallen out the frame, they didnt believe me. Someone came up and accused my husband of pulling it out of the frame! He was so rude and arrogant, we explained that the window wasnt closed and we wanted to close it because of the noise, he again accused us doing it ourselves, tell me why would I want to pull a window out of its frame, espeicially as both of us together couldn't lift it let alone pulling it out!! I went down to reception and asked to swap rooms. A good tip for all - Ask for the keys first to view the room, check that everything is ok then confirm that you'll have it!! Thats what we did after the incident with the window. We changed rooms, again the room was pokey and if you crunched your neck, you could just see the Empire State building. The bathroom door would not close as the door was too big to get pass the toilet. But all in all the hotel was ok. It was clean, free coffee in the mornings with bagels. If you're on a budget then this is the place to stay. A good location. I personally would not stay here again.
Great choice... Don't use the phone
Stayed here for 10 nights. The room was small and basic but clean; as stated in earlier reviews, the air conditioner and fridge are VERY noisy - bring earplugs. The complimentary breakfast consisted of nice muffins/pastries and coffee - not espresso, as expected. The staff were always helpful and cheery. Great location: subway at corner of block, very close to Macy's and Empire State Building (visible from terrace). As for the phone: I had to make international calls... I know they are expensive at hotels but when there was no reply from the other party I was charged more than 7 dollars anyway... That's theft.
Metro Hotel - Great Value
Stayed at this hotel before so knew it was ok. As usual excellent value in midtown, fantastic view of Empire State building from roof terrace. Across the block from Macy's so double value in my book. Rooms large bright and airy, inclusive breakfast of bagels and muffins still good enough to set you up for the day. Only criticism, bathroom a little on the small side but do not let this detract from a great hotel, with a view to die for. One bad thing happened during our stay, one of the lifts broke down whioh meant a long wait sometimes but not really a problem. It's a little way from Times Square and Central Park but walking in New York is all part of the holiday for me
