I've stayed here several times now and have always stayed in the executive rooms, which give access to the executive lounge for breakfast, hors d'oeuvres, cookies, tea/coffee all day, free drinks from the bar during certain times (alcoholic drinks are extra). The price of... more

I would recommend booking one of the Executive rooms (on the upper half a dozen or so floors) as you get "private" check-in in the Executive Lounge on the 44th floor, rather than queuing in the lobby, which can get busy. Being on the executive floors also gives you access... more

Decent, but conference facilities and staff need work
The hotel lobby is nice and the elevators are quick, but the level of customer service is lacking in many areas. I had requested 2 doubles in my room and when we went to check in there was no record of this. The front desk agent made it seem like I was making her job troubling to find me the room I had requested. We eventually found us one but on a smoking floor. Not great, but we'll live. The room was tired and worn in many areas. The telephone next to the beds didn't work so I called for maintenance after the 3rd day and 3rd call someone finally fixed it. Other than that the room was OK. I was there for a conference and the lunch was so awful I had to go to a local deli for lunch every day. We were basically given boxed lunches and were told to eat in a room with no carpet on the floor and no linen. The over abundance of staff seemed like they weren't there to help you but rather to make sure you only took 1 little bottle of water not 2. It felt like I was in public school. So if you are a convener or are thinking of planning a conference there I recommend not choosing there basic option because it is just that... incredibly basic. I expected more from the Hilton.
Not a 4-star in my opinion
This hotel's lobby looks very nice. However, inside the room the carpet is not really clean. The blanket looks old. Toll-free is not free as compared to Hilton Times Square. Internet is not free in-room, you have to pay $9.95. For free internet, you have to go downstairs with your laptop equipped with wireless card at the lobby to the internet. If you have to choose between Hilton New York and Hilton Times Square, I will strongly recommend Hilton Times Square.I would rate this hotel as 4-star. Probably a 3-star one as the cabinet in the washroom cracks as well.
7/10
I have just returned from a 10-night stay. The hotel is in an excellent midtown position, absolutely brilliant. I hold a HHonours Gold Card which claims to upgrade you should there be a free executive room in the building. The check-in lady told us to come back after two hours when one would be ready. We came back and were told its completely full, so we were given a standard room which we viewed, but in my opinion looked like a 3 star hotel room. After complaining 'amazingly' we were upgraded to an executive room. This was nicely furnished, clean and comfortable, of good 4 star standard. My main criticism was the incredibly thin walls, so thin you could hear the person talk normally next door! A nice perk of the executive floor is the free snacks and the continental breakfast served, but be there early as this was always packed with many sharing tables - this was quite poor. We paid roughly $160 p/n and I think this was fair value (only for the executive room though)
Wonderful Stay
Just got back from a long weekend in New York City. I got the Hilton New York through Priceline. I was a bit worried that we would have less than adequate room because of going through Priceline. I was very happy to see that our room.....even though one of the smaller ones in the hotel.....was very beautifully decorated. It also had a fabulous view. We were in this room only about 10 minutes when housekeeping knocked on the door to inquire if everything was satisfactory.....when was the last time that happened when you were in a hotel. After being in this room for a short time I realized that it was near the service elevator and that there was a dull noise that would occur when the elevator rumbled by. I went down to the desk to ask if we might switch our room.....no problem.....and the woman at the desk was very appologetic and accomadating. Our new room was equally as lovely.....again.....one of the smaller rooms but still spacious and immaculate and best of all a fantastic view. The hotel is in the best location...and the people who worked there could not be nicer. In other reviews people complained of the wait for elevators......we did not have that problem at all. All and all the hotel is a well run establishment. If you decide to stay here be sure that you go up to the Rainbow room (across the street at the top of Rockefeller Center) for drinks....absolutely the best New York experience.
Great location, solid hotel
After checking out of the Plaza in disgust and disappointment, I retreated to the Hilton, where I have stayed before. I got a great corner room (like all the rooms it is a good size) looking down avenue of the americas and as usual, everything worked. The lifts are quick and without queues unless there is one of the (quite frequent) conferences, which can turn the lobby into a seething mass. If there is no conference, it really is a great and very easy place to stay.
Great time!
Hilton is experimenting with check-in kiosks in New York and Chicago. We checked in early on Saturday Jan 30, 2004. Using the kiosk made our check-in faster but felt a little guilty as it is probably is going to replace a few jobs. Our room was big and very clean and located on the 14th floor facing 53rd Street. If you plan on visiting try to get a room facing 52nd Street. The loading dock is located on 53rd street and trucks unload throughout the night. It was noisy on the 14th floor, U can't imagine what it was like on lower floors. We ate in the Marketplace restaurant which had great pizza and brioche. Overall, great location and great customer service throughout the hotel.
Great hotel and location for the price!
My girlfriends and I booked the Hilton New York through Priceline and couldn't have been happier with the outcome. We were on a budget, but wanted a 4 star hotel and got one for $95 per night! The only problem is that with priceline you can't specify bedding and initially we were given 1 Queen bed, which doesn't work for 4 adult women! After a few minutes the desk clerk asked if we would mind a handicapped accessible room and of course we jumped at the offer. Our room was average in size, with Neutrogena products and all amenities you could need, also with a large bathroom, due to the handicapped accesibility. Our treatment was first class. The concierge's are the best! So helpful and friendly for a large hotel that, by the way, was fully booked for the weekend. We were lucky not to be sleeping on the floor! You can't beat this location; Ann Taylor Loft store across the street! Close to everything we wanted to do. The only problem was that we decided to stay one more night and when we tried again on priceline for the $95, we were declined and the hotel would not budge off their rate of $179/night. We begrudgingly paid the price, to have the convenience of another night without having to change hotels. Otherwise, we had a great experience here!
Great!
We have just returned from a fantastic 4 day break to NYC, staying at the Hilton. No complaints about this hotel at all. No queues for the lifts, meal in restaurant ok, and biggest piece of NYCheesecake for $6 I have ever seen!! (couldnt manage to eat it all!) We had a couple of tiny problems (couldn't find remote control for tv when we arrived and couldn't open the safe one night) but these we sorted very, very quickly. Would recommend this hotel to anyone-and will hopefully be back to the Big Apple again soon! PS: Dont bother going to Radio City Christmas show, for $115 each, we were not inpressed!
Go with Priceline for this one!
I got the room through Priceine. I think that if you select Midtown Manhattan at the 3 star level and about 100 dollars, you are likely to get this hotel. They may have some sort of deal worked out. In any case, 100 dollars a night doesn't go very far in Manhattan if you are paying the rack rate. I've seen what it buys and it makes my stomach turn. Using Priceline however, 100 can go pretty far and I think the New York Hilton is a good value at that price. As with most New York hotel rooms - especially in older buildings, the rooms are absolutely miniscule. You just have to expect that going in. There is barely enough room to move around the bed and furniture. The bathroom is the same way. The decor is very nice, however. It was up-to-date as of January 2003. Bathroom was done in granite, which I think looked very nice. We got lucky because I asked if they had a king sized bed on a Hilton HHonors floor, which they didn't. So, she put us on a high floor with privileges to the concierge lounge. I'm a sucker for those. They have some little appetizers and continental breakfast up there. There's also a bar (the drinks are NOT complimentary!). The view is nice. Not a bad place to relax if you like. I checked the prices and the concierge rooms were close to 300 dollars. I would never pay that much to use that little lounge, but for free, I'll take it. I think the regular room rack rate was about 240. If I only had a 100 dollars per night for a room, and priceline wasn't an option I wouldn't bother to go to Manhattan. However, if you get the New York Hilton at that price, its very fair and I would return. The location is quite good - near all the 5th avenue shopping. Fairly close to the Subway. Central Park is a few blocks away. I did eat in the hotel restaurant - the "New York Marketplace" for 3 reasons. We arrived late, it was cold out, and I lived in Manhattan before so had already been to some good restaurants. Unless you really don't want to go outside, please don't eat at the restaurant - there's nothing wrong with it, but you are in the middle of New York. Take the Subway down to Union Square or the Village. Go uptown on the west or east side - please! Its almost blasphemous to eat at a hotel restaurant in New York. The mid-town restaurants are very overpriced. Neighborhood places can actually be a surpirsingly good value.
Not as bad as they say
Stayed @ Hilton for 4 nights. 12/03. Got a great rate of $115/night through Priceline. Was a bit concerned after reading the reviews especially for Priceline guests. To my suprise everything was great! Early check in, on the 12th floor, very quiet except for when kids walked pass the room, no problems with the elevators, Clean rooms and towels! Only complaint I have is that the Front desk and Bag check people could give better service...at the least a smile would do. But, that's ok. i only had to see them once.
