I would recommend booking one of the Executive rooms (on the upper half a dozen or so floors) as you get "private" check-in in the Executive Lounge on the 44th floor, rather than queuing in the lobby, which can get busy.
Being on the executive floors also gives you access to the lounge throughout the day for buffet breakfast, all-day tea and coffee, soft drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and cookies included in the price (alcohol is extra).
I've not stayed in the "standard" nor "deluxe" rooms so can't compare room facilities but the executive rooms are of a very good size and don't cost much more than the other rooms.

New York City What a Town, As They “So Good They Named it Twice”
As soon as you leave the airport It hits you. It Never stops, travelling through down town Manhattan is a must for all city travellers. This place has every thing you could need and every thing you don’t need! there’s something for every one.
The Hilton hotel as you would expect was impressive to say the least. The staff were very friendly and helpful, they couldn’t of made us more welcome if they tried.
New York City is some thing out of this world, an inspirational place that can’t be matched.
Just Magical.

I've stayed here several times now and have always stayed in the executive rooms, which give access to the executive lounge for breakfast, hors d'oeuvres, cookies, tea/coffee all day, free drinks from the bar during certain times (alcoholic drinks are extra). The price of these rooms is rarely much more than the standard and deluxe rooms.
A friend was also staying in the hotel - we overlapped by a couple of days - and she was staying in one of the standard rooms. Our rooms were identical in size, decor, and facilities (such as coffee-making, Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries). I believe the deluxe rooms have been renovated over the last couple of years and from pictures I've seen, look very modern. The standard and executives rooms probably could do with a refurbishment too but our rooms were clean and comfortable.
We ate late in the hotel's Marketplace restaurant, which is a nice open, airy, and informal restaurant, and enjoyed a tasty pizza and salad at a very reasonable price.
The hotel is in a great location, close to Radio City Hall, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Rockefeller Centre, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Times Square, and an easy walk to the Empire State Building, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and Grand Central. The hotel also has its own taxi rank.
It's a huge hotel with almost 2,000 rooms so could be considered a little impersonal, but would recommend staying here all the same. Generally, I would consider the price is good value (and even better with the current exchange rate of as good as $2 to the pound) but staying just before Christmas was quite pricey (yet to be expected really). The hotel was very busy this time so the executive lounge was equally busy, particularly at breakfast time.
