I was in Obzor in this hotel 3 years ago. Everything was good. The hotel was amazing and tidy. The food was delicious and hot. The staff was helpful and nice. They could speak English and German. If we had a problem they helped immediately. I can recommend this hotel for everybody who want to travel to Bulgaria.

It isn't as bad as other make out
After reading xanapeg's string on tripadvisor it was fair to say we were concerned that we may have been visiting "'Ell's Bells" but we could have been more wrong! This is AI for the same price as HB or less in other EU countries, you get what you pay for however the rooms were great, plenty of space, regularly cleaned and good quality. Although the restaurant is self service there was always plenty of choice and plenty of food to go around. The rest of the hotel was exactly as expected 4* accomodation on an AI basis. The staff are great and extreamly helpfull. Anyone planning to vist this hotel should have no worries at all. The only disadvantage is that Thomson are the only UK tour operator use the hotel!
disappointed on this first trip to bulgaria
We stayed for a week at this brand new hotel in Obzor, was not sure what to expect because it had only been open for 6 weeks or so. First impression when we arrived was great, looks up to standard, rooms were very clean and comfortable. Our first morning at breakfast was a big disappointment, there were 100s of people milling about, queing up and helping their selves to the vast array of food which later I can sum up as okay and nothing outstanding(apart from fresh fruit and salads). Fly zappers(ie neon blue lights) around food areas would have been a must for a RIU hotel, but they were no where to be seen! The evening sittings(there are 2) were just as exhausting, not a relaxing atmosphere with queing and the hubab of noise. the worst was that the mosquitos were out in force, so if you were not lucky enough to get a table indoors you were given a table outside where you were then on the menu for the mosiqutos!!!!!!!!! The swimming pools were lovely though, but dont expect to get a sunlounger after 9am!!! I have a teenager and there was good entertainment for her age during the day, but come the evening nothing to speak of(if you have children under 6, then they have a mini disco early evening). I have been to alot of places but never Bulgaria, and I dont think I ever will return as our experience was not that relaxing and feel the hotel has still alot to learn with just the simplest of things such as health issues around food. Obzor village worth a visit as cheap and lively.
Hotel from Hell
If you only ever listen to one piece of advise in your life, head this one, do not stay at this hotel! Most family have someone ill following the sewage flooding the hotel and pools. You'll be told minor illnesses, people brought a virus with them, rubbish! Food standards are terrible. Spiral marble wet stairs have no hand rails. Entertainment is a rolling 7 day, so the second week is all repeats. Over 800 Germans at this hotel, so main language spoken is German. Unless you get up a 7 a.m. to put a towel on a sun lounger you wont have one for the day. This list is endless, worst hotel i had stayed at in 29 years. You can walk to the town if you walk through the open sewer that runs next to the hotel. The mosquito capital of Bulgaria.
Severe sickness bug causing problems in hotel
We arrived at the hotel after midnight, there was no porter on hand to help with our luggage, we unloaded it ourselves and made our way to reception. Queued to check in and were pointed vaguely to the left and told your room is outside on the left. Struggled with our luggage outside and made our way up some steps to the block pointed out (no one showed us where to go & we were very tired.) Soon found the lift to our floor and located our room, pristine but only 2 beds for 3 of us! Contacted reception who quickly came and made up the sofa bed in the room. Food in hotel very repetetive, often long queues in the evening and invariably cold, however, we always found something to eat. (Breakfasts good). There was a big ongoing problem with a sickness & diahorea bug while we were there, we saw faxes from the hotel which indicated it had been going on since at least 29th July. People were very poorly, often for a few days, we heard some were hospitalised. It appeared the hotel was trying hard to find out the source, testing water, food etc regularly. To us the swimming pool looked very murky especially after rain and we became very concerned about using it because of the bug. Some people were only consuming bottled drinks that they purchased as they were worried and others ate out of the hotel. I came home with stomach cramps and diahorea. I think that the real threat of becoming poorly took the shine off the whole holiday for us and though we enjoyed the quiet and peacefulness of the resort we never really relaxed. I am sure once the hotel has sorted its illness problems and addressed the food issues it will be okay but not four star in my opinion.
Miramar memories
We spent last week at the Hotel Miramar in Obzor, Bulgaria. All in all, the positive outweighed the negative and we certainly enjoyed our stay. The first high point would have to be the standard and cleanliness of our accommodation. We had a beautiful view from our very comfortable room for three, overlooking one of the pools and the beach. In fact we could step out of the room and be relaxing on the beach or next to the pool within a minute, providing you were up early enough to get a sun lounger! There were simply not enough loungers for everyone. It proved to be extremely difficult to find an unreserved one after about eight o'clock in the morning. However, the hotel management did decide to take matters into their own hands by confiscating all towels which had been left on sun loungers to reserve them before breakfast. There were many disgruntled guests as you can imagine. The hotel itself is located right on the beach of Obzor which is a long stretch of golden sand. The end of the beach towards the town of Obzor tends to be more crowded and walking along the beach towards the town is probably the quickest way to reach Obzor. There is a huge amount of building work and construction going on along the beach so the Miramar's relatively quiet position on the bay will inevitably disappear over the next couple of years. The standard of the food was a bit hit-and-miss. Mealtimes involved a lot of queuing, particularly for the "hot" options. Beware! Apparently Bulgarians don't believe in eating piping hot food! There was lots of choice, but it wasn't always particularly appetising. I wasn't convinced that the meat was cooked thoroughly, the chicken in particular appearing quite 'pink'. Of course there is always the problem of fellow guests not using tongs when serving themselves from the buffet. For whatever reason I still have a stomach upset three days after coming home. A low pont I would have to say was the evening entertainment. Each evening there was some kind of stage show, usually involving participation from stooges amongst the guests. I know it is difficult to cater to an audience of mixed ages and nationalities, but quite frankly I was bored and found the overall standard to be poor. One evening they had advertised a bingo game and did not even have enough bingo tickets to go around! I had heard the horror stories of the flood which had hit the hotel earlier in the month and I must say that there was no evidence of the devastation left. The pools were all spotlessly clean and well maintained and all public areas were very tidy, as you would expect from a hotel advertised as four star. The hotel is located away from the town, which can be reached via the beach or a broken dirt track along a very busy main road. It is full of ubiquitous souvenir stalls and bars. However, strolling through the residential areas was quite interesting. Would I go back to Obzor? Probably not. Will standards improve at the hotel? Undoubtedly. Teething problems exist everywhere and it is unfortunate when holidays aren't as trouble-free as they might be for the indiviuals concerned. However, the staff of the hotel seem genuinely motivated to make a success of things. By the way, the beer they serve is great!
Hotel back up and running
Hi The Hotel We went to the Riu Miramar on the 14th July. We were very nervous because we had heard about the floods a couple of weeks before. We arrived at the hotel after going down a very bumpy road which looked liked it had been bombed. As it was three o'clock in the morning we went straight to our room. The rooms are very nice as you would expect from a brand new hotel. But a word of warning make sure that you don’t get a room on the ground floor, as these were the ones that were flooded. But I did see evidence of new beds going in and people working on the rooms. We got up the next day and had a good look at the hotel one of the main pools was empty but the other three were open and looked clean. We went and got our beach towels from the hut (between 9-10am) and put them on the sun beds because if you don’t you will struggle to get a bed at all. We then went and sunbathed by the pool and did what we came for and relaxed. There was a choice of activities provided by the animation team but they were not pushy in getting you involved. The Food &Drink The food was of good quality and you could always find something to eat, but my main gripe was that the food was the same all week. By the end of the week it kind of got boring there needs to be more choice. The staff was always friendly and the dining room was always very clean. The bars can get very busy and you can end up waiting a long time to get a drink. The bar staff work very long hours but always seem to have a smile on there faces. All the drinks were drinkable and I found the beer to be good (hic). Entertainment The entertainment was poor and everything had to be said once in German and then in English which kind of spoilt it. The staff did try very hard but the entertainment was not to our taste so we sat outside and watched through the window. But the kids enjoyed it. We don’t have kids but some people told us the Thompson only run a kids club for the Germans and the British kids had to fend for themselves. Ozbor You can catch a shuttle bus from the hotel to Ozbor village and the times can be found at reception. The village is quite small but it has a few shops and stalls so that you can buy presents for back home. The best route to the village if you wish to walk is via the beach and past the Riu Helios hotel, but you will get your feet wet as you have to cross a small stream that flows into the sea. Summary On the last day of our holiday (22nd July) all the pools were open but they are all very cold when you first get into them but very nice and refreshing once you have got your shoulders under. There was still a lot of work going on repairing the hotel after the floods but as long as you don’t get a ground floor room you will be ok. All in all we had a fantastic holiday and really enjoyed our stay as we just wanted to relax and chill out, which is what we did. I hope this review helps and if you do go to the Riu Miramar I hope you have a fantastic time. Regards Andy & Amanda
families only!
This is the noisiest hotel we have ever stayed at and the epicentre is situated in the main restaurant. The cause? Waiters with trolleys full of glasses and dishes pushed the whole length of the room over a tiled floor, so we tried the speciality restaurant which served Bulgarian food, but to no avail and twice as many kids. Canteens would be a better description. I have to say the animation team was the best we have ever come across. Very energetic(noisy) and well organised throughout the day. I can’t tell you what the evening entertainment was like as we did not go, we prefer to limit European entertainment to one evening a year! The beach and sea are excellent, little salt in the water and the beach is patrolled by numerous lifeguards. However, watch out for the occasional Bulgarian male ‘naturist’ not a pretty sight. A short walk down the beach is the Bulgarian resort of Obzor, busy and authentic well worth the walk, oh, and beer to die for 40p a glass!!! The main problem with this hotel is management or rather Bulgarian management. As yet their levels of service fall short of what the rest of Europe expects and I would have thought that a German owned hotel would have trained the staff to a much higher standard.
Not Four Star
Arrived at Miramar on Saturday 8th July to find only one of the main three pools open - soon learnt from other guests about the flood the weekend before. Thompson Rep told us nothing, she had only been on site 2 weeks and did not seem to know anything when asked. The one pool that was open was freezing cold and it took them the entire week to slowly fill one of the other pools which was still cold. Having stayed at a Riu Hotel in Mexico we were very disappointed with the standard of this hotel. Rooms were nice but no towels on arrival and some days only given hand towels. Water and Electriicty intermittant at times. Food was very disappointing with virtually the same all week, not labelled enough to know what you were eating, cold chips, very little vegetables and unripe fruit. The entertainment at night was very poor but you watched for a laugh and lack of anything else to do. Soft drinks from the dispensers were flat and bar staff poured far too large measures of alcohol , we had to keep asking for small to get an acceptable measure. The beach was lovely with fine sand and plenty of sun loungers the sea was warm with stong waves which were fun. The hotel needs to improve its food and drink, heat the pools and better entertainment to be even considered worthy of four stars.
what a week
OBZOR: RIU MIRAMAR "NIGHTMARE" DATE 9/07/06 TIPADVISOR MEMBER THORNABY,ENGLAND wife and i have just returned from the riu miramar (30//6/06-7/7/06).on our first day everything was perfect, but what followed was a disaster.it started to rain on saterday afternoon by saterday night it had turned into a thunderstorm.i woke up sunday morning to find the hotel flooded.there was 2 feet of water in the reception area and even more in the ground floor rooms.the water had swept into the front of the hotel bringing in soil and sewage from the nearby village of obzor.the pools where filled with sand and contaminated water.the ground floor rooms where flooded. "beware" the hotel did not have any evacuation procedures in place. all the guests had to fend for their selfs till the reps arrived later .we moved out of the hotel for 2 days. when got back our rooms had been reallocated to guests who arrived in the early hours of wednesday morning who had no been told of the problems by the thomson reps, the beach has been reopened, but upto friday the pools where empty of water.none of the bedroom furnishings have replaced they have been left to dry.when we arrived back, the ground floor room mattrass's where on the balconies drying. before the rain i could not fault the hotel.when it is cleaned properly i am sure anyone staying there will have a good holiday unelss it rains!!!
Hotel progression -Riu Miramar, Obzor Beach, Bulgaria
Riu Miramar - obzor beach The pictures show the one side of the one block that isnt finished. the rest of the hotel is finished so please do not think it is all like this because its not. you will have a wonderful time! I have not stayed at the Miramar, Thomson put us in the neighbour hotel as one block of the Miramar wasnt completed in time. On a recent post people were worried the hotel would not be ready for them in Summer. The hotel is basically finished, the lobby, pools, bars rooms etc are all in full working use, and a German holiday company has guests staying here now. There is one block of rooms however that are not finished and also one pool bar, they do look as if they will be finished soon as it is only one side of the block that needs clearing up, painting etc the work men are working all hours to get it finished in time for the Summer rush. We visited the Miramar as we were staying at another Riu next door (helios Bay hotel) the Miramar is very clean, lots of room at the bars, the staff seem friendly and helpful, the reception is big and lots of receptionists as much and a little more than we expected. It had a great atmophere as there was an entertainer by the pool he was a bit loud but he had lots of crowds and was certainly doing his job well. Both the kids pool and the main pool are large, the pool bar serve a wide range of drinks for everyone, as above one isnt open but the other is. The rooms on the finished block from the outside look very nice. The beach was nice, lots of sunbeds. I would recommend this hotel as i would recommened the Helios Bay, we would have been happy to stay at this hotel as we Originally were but perhaps a little later on in the season. I hope the above doesnt put you off if you are due to go out in the next month as it is not meant for that purpose. If we were to go out in two weeks time to this hotel i would be happy enough and Thomson will not put you there if it were to make you unhappy. i am sure you will not be dissapointed. Picture 1 shows the finished block Picture 2 shows the pool the rest of the pictures show different angles of that one unfinished block. thanks
