Do Not Stay Here
I stayed at the hotel while on business in NYC. I had to change rooms two times so I could find a quiet place to sleep. The walls are paper thin; the rooms are super small and worn out. This hotel is worse than Motel 6. Stay somewhere else so you can get some rest.
Renovations needed, but on their way
Having been here before, I knew exactly what to expect. I probably wouldn't have returned if we didn't get such a great rate. And since the location is great, I decided to return and give it another shot. This hotel definitely needs a renovation, and the Hyatt knows that. There are monitors everywhere displaying what the completed hotel will look like. I was expecting a small room again, but we got upgraded to a junior suite! Huge room, but like the rest of the hotel, very dated! The nice thing about this hotel is their restaurants. We've been to the Commodore before and wanted to go to their new one, but it was closed! To sum it up, this hotel is OK. However, I dont think I'll be returning until renovations are finally complete!
Mixed results
Last week my room was great. No problems. A little fuzzy TV reception, but other than that very good. Christmas week, however, the phone had a constant buzz, No one at the Front Desk would answer when I called, the TV reception was so bad I had to turn it off. I couldn't stand the interference on most channels. The shower was a trickle. Not fun at all.
Great location - but rating the hotel? Has to be Terrible.
Having stayed in a number of Hyatts around the world I was glad to book the Grand for a 3-night stay in NY. After reading reviews before I went out (but sadly after I had booked) I was apprehensive about what I might find. Sadly my worst fears were confirmed - a reasonable lobby, but the rooms and service were abysmal. The first room I was given had paper-thin walls and it took me several requests to move to a quieter room. In both cases the rooms were in desperate need of an update - fair enough Hyatt may be upgrading the rooms in 2004 but that must be about 5 years too late in my opinion. As well as out-dated furniture the rooms were in disrepair (e.g. wallpaper falling off, mould in the bathroom). The restauarant staff were v.good but front desk and bell were appaling. Great location - but my advice would be to stay away until the rennovations are complete and some positive reviews have come through. If you do stay there complain repeatedly! Eventually you should get a better room... you'll also get progressively better coupons the more often you complain! (the front desk staff seemed well rehearsed in using these as a means of apology for the poor state of the rooms) Given the prominence and importance of this location Hyatt should be asahamed to attach their name to this hotel - maybe they don't value their brand much anymore! Take a look at the Hyatt in say Shanghai and you'll see how it should be done.
Worst hotel experience on the plant!
As a Platinum Gold Passport member, I have stayed in my share of Hyatt hotels, and my recent visit to the Grand Hyatt in NY will be my last. Not only did I have to walk into the lobby late at night in my overcoat and pajamas to get someone to answer the wake up call request but also had to request shampoo or conditioner for the room as there was none. It took another 15 minutes to receive the shampoo from Housekeeping, after a 30 minute wait for them to mistakenly deliver lotion, only to find that the hairdryer didn't work. Later that day I never received a fax from my office, which confirmed delivery, and the room did not have Internet access. Another 30 minutes and a phone cable was finally delivered. To top it all off, the Sky Bar, where I planned to meet friends for a holiday drink, was closed.
Treated properly at the Hyatt NYC
I stayed at the Hyatt NYC during marathon weekend and I was extremely impressed. I had booked a cheap deal via a travel website and being a single person, expected the normal treatment, which is to say I thought I'd be shunted into a back room with little or no natural light. Not so with the Hyatt - my room was enormous, tastefully decorated, warm, comfy and quiet. I ordered room service twice and both times were prompt and the food was delicious. I found all of the staff - from the cleaners to the security people - to be courteous and efficient. I really enjoyed the "big hotel" feeling, despite it being very busy. Most evenings I would return to the hotel well after midnight and I personally found it reassuring that I was asked for my hotel card as identity before being allowed to pass into the lobby. This was my fifth trip as a single person to NYC, and by far the best comfort, service and value I have received by far. Merry Christmas.
Everything's Broken, and Security is Racist
Simply put, this hotel is terrible. The lobby is misleadingly nice. I'd been to the hotel's ballroom for a political fundraiser, and was impressed with the convenient location and nice banquet facilites. Staying here for threee nights was my worst NYC hotel experience to date-- and I've stayed at 20+ NYC hotels at both higher and lower prices than the Hyatt. The staff is friendly, but clueless. My room was a closet with NO view. On a sunny day, only a twilight glow came in, since my room looked straight into another hotel room, across a dim alley. The electric outlets recess into the wall when one attempts to plug something into them, forcing me to charge my cell phone in the bathroom-- which lacks a tub or space to turn around. Next, the iron spilled rust-colored water on a white dress shirt-- explaining why the ironing board was stained in myriad places. The bed was uncomfortable, and the TV only tuned a few channels. The duve was dingy, and the carpet was stained and appeared dirty. The phone next to my bed had no cord, so it didn't work, and my wake-up call never happened. Room service took an hour, and the food was awful. Of course, I spent most of that hour attempting to track down the FedEx package that had been delivered to the hotel at 9:55 AM according to FedEx, but the hotel had no record. Nice way to scare a weary business traveler who needed that package for a presentation! Finally, and worst of all, an African American friend came to visit me at 10:00 PM and was harassed by security-- though I was not questioned even once. This is TOTALLY unaccepable, and the only reason I would vent my disappointment publicly.
Good Priced Hotel and Great Location!
My wife and I were a bit apprehensive after we read all the negative comments about this hotel. However, we decided to stay at this hotel. It was great! For the price we paid, they gave us a room on the 29th floor. We slept well; there was no noise from street level. The location was very good, very close to Times Square, Fifth Avenue Shopping, Macy's and right next to Grand Central Station! Access to subway was convenient. We had a great five days in NYC and staying at the Grand Hyatt was a great decision! Thank you for a great stay Grand Hyatt!
Location, location, location...
From some of the reviews here, I was prepared for a total disappointment. Overall, I would have preferred the Stanhope Park Hyatt, but I chose Grand Hyatt for location and proved correct when I could not get a cab after the theatre. We were already upgraded to club floor on arrival, but I was chagrined to discover that Hyatt closes the Regency Club on the weekend as well as the bs. center. The room was quite large by any standard and clean even if not yet remodeled and having a view of NYC from the higher floor was a bonus. Free breakfast and coffee were made available, but I walked to Kinko's to print a boarding pass after the concierge's printer didn't work; at least they tried. Overall, I will probably choose the Stanhope next trip and hire a limo after the theatre as this Hyatt in its current state is not up to the standards of the marque, but one could do much worse.
The Hyatt is the perfect spot for a weekend in NYC
Once again, the location scores! I must say, the Hyatt was a great place to be for the long weekend as it is right over the subway for quick north or south access, and also right on the "s" line for quick transfer to the west side at Times Square. We stayed on the 19th floor right across the hall from the main elevator .. not a peep we heard throughtout the night. This place is bustling with the lobby just too crowded for my taste, but who cares .. your out the door to explore the city. We used Priceline as well. Dont shy away .. now if you want your hotel to fit the mood of a romantic getways look elsewhere.
