NO HEAT & BROKEN BEDS! DON'T STAY HERE
My friend and I stayed here for 2 nights before checking out to go to another hotel. This place was horrible. One of the windows was broken, both sets of blinds were broken so they wouldnt shut, the bathroom was filthy dirty, there was old food in our mini-fridge, the room had 3 beds (a double and 2 twins) but it only had 3 thin pillows and 2 couch throw type blankets. The room was not decorated like in the pictures nor were there any decorations or amenities like in the picture (no tv's, heaters, drapes, rugs etc). Our room was literally 3... more
Not great
This hostel isn't a great place at all. Sure, it was clean, but it's pretty rundown and the bathrooms are a bit gross. On the plus side, it's cheap and in a great neighbourhood, close to cool bars on Amsterdam Avenue and close to the park. I had a great time in NYC, but this hostel is VERY basic and probably the worst I've stayed in. The staff weren't very helpful either. If you're looking for the kind of hostel where you make friends and socialise, this isn't that kind of place - there isn't really a common room or anything. We did get air... more
My hostel nightmare....
On the plus: great location and fantastic cafes/restaurants nearby and cheap. But is it worth it? Hell no. Although I have enjoyed reading the other reviews, as I feel like we have some sort of shared war horror story connection. My husband and I had three of the worst nights of our life in this shocking place. Everything people have said is true, although I would argue that the horrendous, gagging smell is from the pigeons. We were faced with the impossible dilemna of having the fan going and making the smell 10 times worse, or turning it... more
Really Run Down Place
Spent 3 nights with my family there. I never imagined that a place in North America could be that bad. Being from India, I have lived in all types of places but this has to be worst. Being an old place is fine but no attempt has been made to keep it functional. The picture shown when I booked the room is definitely misleading. There was not even a garbage can provided in a double room with 3 beds. The bath room was the worst. It is very small and only one of the two bathrooms was working on our floor of about 14 rooms. The big roll of... more
Don't Stay Here!
This hostel was depressing. My traveling partner and I stayed in a private room, although we regret staying here at all. Being from TX, my first complaint was that my room (and most of the others) have no air conditioning. My stay was during August and it was brutally hot; much too hot to get any real sleep. There were two fans in the room, but one was broken. The one working fan didn't help much anyway. Also, there was a real bug problem and it often times smelled bad. Some other reviews mention mice, but luckily I did not see any. The... more
It was OK but take some extra stuff along
This place wasn't bad at all. It was close to nice cafe's and the neighborhood seemed safe. I parked my car right out front "free" for 2 days, no problem. But do take along shower shoes, a night light (if you don't you will have to sleep in pitch dark or leave the glaring ceiling light on), a can of spray (just in case), and a portable TV (small of course) if you are so inclined. We enjoyed the proximity to Central Park and downtown Manhattan esecially the East side directly across Central PArk. A 5 minute drive, and I even found parking... more
Know the risks!
What ya gonna do? NYC housing costs are pricey due to the space problems, and so are the rental costs. So you have to make a choice. Do you want the accomodations you're used to and pay 250$ a night, or are you willing to tough it out a little for a cheaper deal? Oh yes, you will be toughing it out here. After I hauled heavy suitcases up four flights of rickety steep stairs, I was swearing, "Never again!" But if you are strong of heart and joint, it's not so bad. (Seriously though, if you have a health condition that proscribes... more
Stay here and ruin your holiday
How i wished that i had read the reviews on here before booking this hellhole but having been travelling a lot over the past 3 years and using Expedia they can normally be relied upon to present places that are value for money. I don't know how in the world this nightmare building made its way on to a reputable site like Expedia. The reviewer who stayed in May 2005 is spot on, in fact i think i stayed in the same room on the dreaded 4th floor which was more than depressing (filth and disease are two words that spring to mind) Its true about... more
Do not stay at Columbus Studios Hostel
This place should be shut down. I arrived before I could check in so I had to lug my suitcases down a spiral staircase that was so narrow I about fell down. I placed my belongings in a locker that I had to pay $4.00 each time I closed it. When I finally checked in my room was next door on the 4th floor. I opened the main door to the building and about gagged. The first thing I smelt was a mix of cat urine and a rotting carcass. I lugged my 2 suitcases and duffel bag up four flights of stairs that sounded light they were about to... more
Great Hostel! Worth every penny!
I don't know why people have been complaining so much about this hostel - I have read reviews calling it "the most wretched place on earth". I did not see one roach or mouse the entire stay - the bathrooms were in fine condition and the water was warm. If you're looking for good food in the area, there's a great 24 hour restaurant 8 blocks away (77th + B'way) called Manhattan Diner - we dined there every morning. Friendly staff night and day, plus 24 hour security. Nights were quiet, but a little bit cold. Fortunately, they have clean... more
