This hotel sounds very grand but is in fact, a very basic backpackers' budget hotel on the borders of Spanish Harlem overlooking Central Park West.
Formerly a 'nut house', nothing much has changed in terms of rooms comfort. The walls have been given a coat of paint but the carpeting and furnishings are of the cheapest quality. Has one elevator in the building which is used by staff and guests and takes an interminably long time to reach your floor. The room was so small that adding a small chair caused space problems. No food facilities on premises and the nearest eatery was a greasy spoon 3 blocks away. One very tatty deli on the corner of street. Basement has dispensing machines for beverages.
The worst aspect of this hotel is the NOISE. From midnight onwards, the fire doors banged constantly and could be heard even if it was from the lower floors; TVs and radios were loud; guests conversations could be heard word for word from the three adjoining rooms; the bathroom systems resounded through the room all the time no matter what floor was using the facilities.
If you are a light sleeper and have suicidal tendencies at being driven mad by noise, then this establishment is definitely not recommended.
The staff were sweet, welcoming, helpful and extremely friendly.
Caution: I was charged $12.35 for 2 x 10 second local telephone calls which didn’t connect but the argument was that once I lifted the receiver off the cradle, that constituted a telephone call that registered at reception!
We checked out at midnight on the day we arrived and found alternative accommodation.

We booked this holiday with only 4 weeks in advance through Teletext. When we arrived at the airport we flagged a taxi to take us and he was unsure of were it was we went through some shady places but when we finally arrived we were just glad it was not one of the areas we had just been through.
We checked in easily then sent to room which was small dark and dingy the view was of nothing just other windows it was not a good start for 2 ladies traveling alone, the first thing we asked for was a safety deposit box which they did not have so we had to hide our money all the time which was quite unnerving, as soon as we arrived we threw our suitcases down and went out we walked into central park (not realizing how far from down town we were) and walked for a long time to get to the shops.
We learned from that night and got a taxi there and back after that. The hotel is cheap looking and not very inviting but at the end of the day your in New York and you probably spend 7 hours sleeping there then you out all the time. It can be noisy of a night you can here everything which is annoying because I’m a light sleeper.
The cost of the taxis adds up but we got the holiday for a reasonable cost so we were not to worried, the hotel staff were very nice and helpful pointing out things to do and were to go. Some New Yorkers were rude especially the police men when asking for directions but once you get your bearings its not so bad.
New York is an amazing place its just a shame we chose an out the way hotel but lesson learnt we will go more mid town next time, and as the saying goes you get what you pay for if you want luxury don’t choose this hotel it is most basic and badly located. Ps take loads of money and plastic because the shops are amazing but not the hotel.
