Hotel Description:
This 16-story boutique hotel is located on Madison Avenue, just a block from Park Avenue and five blocks from the Empire State Building and the Flatiron District.
Ever fancied New York City but still haven't got there...now's your chance!
New York is the place to be whether you're young or old, in a couple or with a group of good friends - New York offers that true taste of the good old U.S of A.
I organised separate flights through Expedia and contacted the hotel myself via email, with any hiccups. 'The Roger Williams Hotel' was recommended through numerous websites as a reasonably priced hotel, but wow - what a great place to stay!
Situated on the lower end of Madison Avenue, 'The Roger Williams Hotel' is walking distance (1 block) from both the Empire States Building and the beautiful Flat Iron Building.
Offering small but contemporary designed rooms with minimalist bathrooms equipped with showers. We thought this hotel was a good starting point for a great city trip! But the bonus has to be the complimentary buffet breakfast offering delicious assorted cereals, fresh juices and tasty mini Danishes and muffins together with a drinks machine available, anytime.
New York City holidays are not cheap, but if you shop around you CAN get six nights stay, flights and accommodation for around six-seven hundred pounds and with great weather to see all the attractions.
And don't be deceived, New York maybe an island but it's bigger than you think - from the hotel to the middle of Central Park is around a good 20 minutes walk. If walking is not for you - then try the NY Taxis, not only are they a cultural experience but actually very reasonable if there's more than one of you, but warning -not for the faint hearted as traffic etiquette isn't one of their strong points!
What to see, what to do...now is the exciting part!
New York offers designer shops galore, which is great to see even if you can't really afford it. Seventh Avenue, Madison Avenue, Time Square, Macy's and Bloomingdales - I'm sure you'll find something to spend your well earned cash upon.
Liberty & Ellis Island Best is make an early start, travel by taxi down to Battery Park as the subway isn't 100% reliable, if you're in a rush - ferries to Ellis Island fill up quickly so try to get down before 10.30am as to not be disappointed. Have your bag ready for Security checks. Amazing to see the icon of the century -the majestic Statue of Liberty.
Why not see the wonderful play which portrays how the migrants came to the Big Apple, or do a family search within the archives at Ellis Island.
Time Square Great to visit day or night, a bustling hive of activity with giant electronic advertising billboards to get your attention. Here you'll find the cafe with an array of assorted New York cheesecakes, Tkts - outlet for discounted Broadway Theatre tickets, Hershey Chocolate shop and many more and for the women - if you're lucky - you'll get to see 'The Naked Cowboy!' Yeee Haaa!
Empire States Building There are always queues to visit the Empire States Building, but well worth it. Late afternoon seems the best time for queuing but expect to wait up to an hour and the views are spectacular at sunset.
Central Park Is an amazing place to visit, whether for a gentle stroll to the Guggenheim Museum, National History museum (free) or New York Zoo, its astounding to think there's such a vast area of park land within a busy city like New York. Also worth a visit is the 'Strawberry Fields' opposite the Dakota Buildings, and memorial to the Late, Great John Lennon.
World Trade Centre Within the centre of the financial district, there is a new project rising. Learn about the World Trade Centres, their purpose and the brave people lost, but see the plans for the new rise for Hope.
A thought provoking place, very emotional but worth seeing - give pray for those no longer with us.
