We booked the Sun Palace to coincide...
5 / 10
Nov 2007, Mr B Norris

We booked the Sun Palace to coincide with the October school holidays. Not the best time to visit this hotel as it was the last week of the session and the staff were due to finish on our last day, so the commitment seemed to be lacking.
We arrived on Wednesday 24/10/07. The ad is misleading as the beach is a good 10 minutes walk across a main road and this part of the beach is poor. You can walk down the beach to Faliraki where the beach is much better, about 10 minutes walk.
Starting off with the good points:-
Weather was very good for the time of year, good job because there is not much to do if it had been bad.
The pool side loos were spotless and even though the urinals were covered up damaged they were checked at least every hour by the cleaning staff.
Over to the bad points:-
During our first visit to the restaurant I could only described it as being more like a café. (Maybe we had been spoiled at other 4* hotels).
There were stray cats and dogs roaming the place constantly.
The tennis court was overgrown and the rackets broken.
The rooms were cleaned every day, but not very well.
The animation team consisted of 3 young ladies, who tried hard to entertain, but unfortunately one left on Thursday and one finished on the Saturday, leaving only one to run the show for the rest of the holiday. She tried her best.
The turn on the holiday was on Monday when a team of suits turned up, we never found out if they were from their head office, tourist board, holiday companies or wherever, but it was the best thing that could have happened.
It was like walking into a different restaurant from Monday dinner. The plates and food were covered up with labels telling you what was on offer. The staff wore hair nets and gloves and patrolled the food to ensure the utensils were not left in the food and were replaced on the plates that had not been there before Monday.
The air conditioning was turned off in early October and even though the restaurant was stifling they refused to turn it back on.
On Tuesday because the suits were about they decided to get rid of one of the stray dogs that had ventured into the grounds, so one of the staff picked it up and took it out across the road as he was returning to the hotel the dog followed him and was knocked down and killed, the screech of brakes and the thud upset a number of guests.
On the last day the staff started to remove and pack everything away and the kids were told not to go in the pool. This was not very good, as most guests were not being picked up until the afternoon and some as late as 23.50.
If you decided to go to this hotel, stay away from the end of October.

Just got back from Sun Palace what a fantastic hotel; facilities excellent, rooms very clean, maids in every day and very cheerful. Bar staff and animation team very good with kids and adults. Went all inclusive and never moaned once about the food it was lovely, lots of choice, a few people moaning about it but you get that everywhere. Weather beatiful had a few days with a bit of rain but still made the most of the pool area , 5 mins walk to the beatiful beach of Falaraki. Elvis show funny and entertainment was ok for end of season, I went on holiday with my daughter and some friends but am going to take all my family back there next year in August. Rhodes old town worth a visit, castle good for shopping. Overall best hol yet 10 out of 10, just a tip take plenty mosquito cream we did get bit.

Oct 2007, Dr Rob Lumsden

I along with everyone else in our family had a superb time once again at Sun Palace, sadly all the animation team are leaving sonja, Sara and Ralucka who is famous for her moooyyybbeees at bingo.
Anyway we stayed in room 428 in the building just on the right from the main entrance as we usually do and we arrived to a lovely clean room and we were greeted by the receptions and given gifts in thanks to our loyalism. As many people know October time in Rhodes is winter, however most days it was 28 degrees and above and was a very nice temperature just not too hot.
I would recommend a visit to Rhodes old town and just explore the shops and have an english breakfast in the english cafe with english sausages as the food sadly is majority catered for the German guests, however there is something there for everyone and I am sure you will get around it!
This was the first holiday that I did not see a single cockroach in the hotel which was superb and I was very very impressed with the cleanliness and high maintenance standards kept by the maids and hotel staff. Everyone within the resort was friendly but I recommend that you don't get persuaded into the shops if you aren't going to buy from there as they will go out of their way to provide you with something to buy.
Faliraki's town centre was very quiet along club street and bar street however many places were still open as we were some of the last guests to leave the resort, everything was closing for the winter. However next May everything comes back with a bang and Faliraki is reborn and the nightlife is superb as we learnt from previous occasions. Please don't be put off by any negativity expressed by other people this is a must for all be it sunseekers, orienteerers, clubbers, relaxers and sport fanatics there is something for everyone and the people all speak perfect english and german so its all good. One thing I would recommend is the bowling alley which is newly open and stays open all night literally and all through the winter it is there for the locals.
I would like to give a special mention to Kostas one of the waiters who has been there for a long time and if you ask him to make his noce he will, he is a very very nice man who has a heart of gold and will go out of his way to help guests. Everyone in the hotel do their best to make your holiday as superb as possible and anything you want you can get in Faliraki Town as many shops take orders and deliver in for a small charge, just be careful in Rhodes old town as there can be cases of pickpocketing.
I hope I have left you lots of information and maybe you could e-mail me if you want to ask any questions as we have been to the resort many a time and hope you follow in our footsteps next summer. regards and best wishes

DISGRACEFUL!!! On arrival at the...

Oct 2007, Mr J Poskitt

DISGRACEFUL!!!
On arrival at the hotel our initial impression was that it was a clean, tidy and family friendly place to stay. This was soon to change when we were shown to our rooms. The first room that we were taken to was situated at the other side of a main road, not even in the hotel grounds, which had no more than a bed and a bedside cabinet, the rooms were dull, had no lighting, no window and the air conditioning did not work. This was not acceptable since we had paid £500 for 4 star accommodation.
When complaining about the rooms we were provided we were then told we had to share a family room between 4 of us (2 couples) and this is where we were made to spend our first night being reassured that 2 double rooms would be provided for us in the morning.
On arrival of the morning we asked about these 2 rooms and were given another family room between the 4 us. On entering the room we were greeted by electrical wires hanging from the main electrical switch in the room, wallpaper peeling off the walls, no air conditioning and again lack of lighting. Further more to this there was no hot water supply and the shower fastenings did not work.
When complaining about this there seemed like there was a lack of support not only from the reservation manager but from the Thompson rep as well. Upon asking for a safer room we were cast aside and ignored by the hotel staff.
After several days of complaining we were told by the reception staff that we were going to be billed for the damage to the room as we broke several items in the room (one of these being the shower which I mentioned earlier), we were so shocked by this we made a formal complaint with our rep, which she reluctantly carried out. After the report was made we were both moved to different rooms which we had originally booked, this was fine up until 10 minutes of entering the room where the roof fell through.
We were then moved to our 4th room within a week and again the air conditioning unit did not work, at this point we failed to complain about the situation and tried to enjoy the rest of our holiday.
Overall though the majority of the night staff were friendly, the food was nice and the pool had a good atmosphere through out the day.

On arrival to the Sun Palace, we was...

Sep 2007, Mrs L Fenton

On arrival to the Sun Palace, we was pleased with the hotel on the first impression, there was lots of guests walking round with fabulous tans hence the heatwave. Staff were friendly and cooperative at all times, reception, bar staff and maids all spoke to guests and even the hotel shop owners were pleasant.
Rooms are nice and clean, there is a flat sceen TV on the wall and the air conditioning worked. There is a fridge where you can put water in or even make up some ice. There may be some noise however if you are above or across from the stage, this could be an advantage though if you have children, if they go to bed early you can watch from your balcony.
Of the comments that have been made regarding some of the negative aspects of the hotel, a holiday is what you make it and I know that an accumulation of events can be depressing, especially if you have saved up all year. But most faults can be rectified and this hotel is so friendly, you will meet other guests and who actually sit and talk to each other!
The entertainment team are good, remember they have limited resources, so you cant expect first class cabaret shows but just good laughs. We got picked to do a couple of stints on the stage, oh my God, I came second in the Miss Sun Palace, (was robbed) only joking. The entertainment during the day is good (bingo got a bit competitive) so if you can drag yourself away from your sunbed then it is quite a good laugh, only thing they may have you doing some daft things.
Sonja is lovely and I observed no different treatment towards guests, in fact she is very talented, and is a good team leader. Sarah, was born there! no seriously, she has been going to Sun Palace for years with her family and is always smiling, Zorro, never sleeps, he is a good all round entertainer, very lively after dark! The other shows were ok and Elvis night was hilarious, you just gotta see it, had a great time on the karaoke, people could actually sing, was quite shocked.
Bar staff (Dimitrius) worked very hard, give them some tips now and then they do appreciate it, they work long hours, would you do it?
The food, I mostly ate breakfast because I got up early, I usually had eggs or toast, for dinner I had soup and bread, other guests in the party enjoyed the food. We ate out most nights or went for supper, chicken wings! Some of the food can get repetitive, however most of the food actually tasted better than it looked so try it first.
There is a curry house near the slingshot and Jamaica bar does English food, we had Sunday dinners there. The local drinks are ok and I did have a hangover one morning so there either not watered down or rocket fuel! The machine that supplied water and pop often had only soda in but if you told the barstaff they changed the syrup.
Its only 5 euros anywhere in Faliraki and 15 to Rhodes town, which is lovely to visit. There is a local bus service also which is very cheap. The nightlife and the bars are open till dawn, we had the best time in the bedrock bar! Most bars are ok and they don't hassle you too much, underground bar was 241, and the clubs (so I've been told) were also good. Would go half board next time because we ate out a lot, but that was our choice and besides they had no Baileys, however we bought some and drank it at the hotel.
Pool area was cleaned in the mornings (7am) I did notice this (I was up at this time around the pool area). There were quite a number of ear infections so the children got some earplugs which seemed to help. Peak season you can expect an overflow of children in the pool so there is bound to be some transfer of infection. Ear drops can be bought from the chemist, we didn't really need antibiotics, as the drops worked fine. Guests were putting their towels out early in the morning, (some were doing this at 12.30am!) which was not allowed so this was rectified and Sonja warned the culprits at the end of the night to adhere to the rules.
There are lots of attractions such as the water park and diving trips or day tours, one group hired their own coach and driver for the day. The beach had watersports with bars and restaurants, there is plenty of boats trips however we was disappointed to find the boat taxi going to Rhodes was not available.
We did meet some lovely people at this hotel, had some good laughs and best of all the kids enjoyed themselves and if they are happy then it does make a hassle free holiday. I have given this hotel 9 out of 10 because we ate out a lot so there should be more theme nights in the restaurant, or more choice.
All inclusive holidays are exactly the same, no matter where you go, the Sun Palace is no exception. The holiday overall was good and lots to do or not to do, and as the weather was extremely hot I am ashamed to say we just took it easy and relaxed. The children were well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, doing their own thing mostly. However the kids were always well behaved and never caused any disturbance to other guests. The motto is if your nice to people there nice back, don't be grumpy on holiday make the best of it, enjoy yourself.

Me, my husband and our 3 year old...

Sep 2007, Mrs L Buckley

Me, my husband and our 3 year old daughter stayed for two weeks and had a really lovely time.
We arrived about 1.30pm and was checked in straight away, no hassle. The lobby area was so lovely with being newly decorated with sofas, glass coffee tables with vases of flowers, very nice. We stayed in room 351 which is in the main block of the hotel. It was very clean and of high standard. My daughter enjoyed having a double bed to herself. There was plenty of storage space for clothes etc. The bathroom was very impressive. There was a safe in the room which we hired for 40 euros for two weeks which we thought, half of that money was a deposit but it was not. There was also a fridge which you did not have to pay for which was good for storing water etc.
There is a bar inside with a seating area which is very relaxing and a games area for older children with computers etc. There is also a little mini market in the hotel which we found very useful.
The restaurant was clean with really friendly staff. The kids buffet could of been better with more variety and choice, instead of spag bol every day. There was a good salad buffet and lots of fresh fruit and bread. The main buffet was not bad but could of been better with more choice of dishes instead of veal and pork all the time. The Greek, Chinese and BBQ nights were very nice with plenty to choose from.
The swimming pool was very clean and George, (pool attendant), was always working hard and very friendly. Our daughter loved going under the waterfalls. We could always get a sunbed around the main pool or childrens pool any time of the day. The pool bar served soft drinks, which you could help yourself, and alcohol, which the bar tenders served you were very friendly.
The entertainment team consisted of four people. Sarah, Verluca, Zollo and Sonia. The team leader never really did a lot, but the other three worked really hard day and night and were very friendly. They had water aerobics (I joined in 5 times and really enjoyed it especially the music they played when doing it), water polo, killer darts, french bowls and table tennis during the day. There is also a kids club run mainly by Zollo for older children. At 5.30pm my husband loved going to play BINGO but I think he really enjoyed the theme tune! At night the entertainment varied to people's liking but they had a kids disco which my daughter loved.
The hotel is situated just a 5 minute walk to the quieter area of bars, shops and restaurants. Just another 5 minute walk after that and you are in the very lively strip of bars and clubs where you can take kids in most of the bars. We ate out a couple of times for a change of scenery and was very nice. 'Something Different' restaurant was excellent and even had a kids play area so we could eat whilst our daughter enjoyed herself.
The beach was only a ten minute walk across the road and was lovely with the sea really warm. We went on two boat excursions which we booked at across the road with a really friendly man in one of the shops. One was a full day excursion to Lindos which is really beautiful.
Overall the holiday was good with no major complaints. We would definitely go back there again as we found that all age groups were welcome and everybody was so friendly.

Sep 2007, Mr Rob Lumsden

I am writing this review a bit prematurely however I have been to Sun Palace before in may 2005 for my birthday and may I say I truly had the best time in my life!
I went along with 15 others ranging from 3 to 60 and there was so much to do. The food was of a high standard and as a fussy eater I say that with all my heart! However they could of use the barbeque allot more!
The head waiter who knew my family from previous visits welcomed us with fruit and wine and escorted us to our rooms (all together) I don’t remember which precise room we where in however it was to the left of the entrance.
Upon arrival in our rooms we found freshly made up beds and spotless attire for a bottom floor room. No bugs no insects apart from around the drinks machines by the pool!
The staff couldn’t be more lovely and were very funny just watching their pathetic attempts at impersonations was hilarious in itself!
The only grumpy person was the old man in the little shop in the hotel.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are going again in two weeks so watch this space for more positive feedback from a sun seeking teenager! (touch wood)

Travelled to Sun Palace, our party...
8 / 10
Sep 2007, Miss V Heald

Travelled to Sun Palace, our party consisted of 4 adults, 28-31 yrs and 2 children age 1 & 2 - I had read reviews before we went and was a little concerned as what to expect!
We arrived mid afternoon, and check in was very quick and prompt, staff friendly. The reception area is very impressive, just as you would expect in a 4* hotel. We were in 442, which was in the overflow building, (I was dreading it!) especially as the main part has been refurbished, however, OUR room was clean and spacious, although not really up to 4* standards, had I not known about the refurb. Cleaners came daily and changed towels etc. I was disappointed we didn’t get a new room but holidays are what you make it, and we had a good time! After all you are in Greece. Please note some other guests did have probs with cockroaches on the ground floor, but I didn’t see any.
There are ample sunbeds, but some guests still reserve sunbeds when requested not to, but we still managed to get beds in a decent spot. Entertainment in the daytime is fine; it's not in your face and the animation team work extremely hard. Water aerobics looked good, (I chose not to join in, wished I had though after all the booze), water polo. The hotel dance is part of the holiday and the kids love joining in, although ours were a bit too young. Bingo is daily at 5.30 and is amusing, top prize of 150 Euros so worth a go.
Food - I’m normally really easy to please, the first few days were average, plenty to choose from but meals were a little repetitive and I got a bit bored. They are also quite strict with what you wear during the day, you need to wear dry clothes and long trousers in the evening, and however my partner wore long shorts and was ok. The kids menu is a bit bland, always pasta bolognese, chips and fish fingers. Plenty of fresh bread and fruit. If there was an all inclusive drinks package I would probably give the food a miss. It's not that terrible but people have there own opinions. We ate out a few times, typical English we went to McDonalds! There was a gorgeous Mexican just up the road from the hotel on the right hand side, well worth it for a change, for 2 adults meals came to 40 Euros and that was 2 course including drinks. There is a wide selection of drinks available, the beer is good and the vodka very strong!
Evening entertainment varies, there is a kids mini disco each evening that’s lasts for half hour, we stayed at the hotel most evenings and enjoyed what was on offer, again top marks to the animation team!
The local beach is a short walk across the road, however is shingle and there are large pebbles in sea - take a further walk up to Faliraki beach and it is much nicer.
Didn’t manage to get to the water park, but we met some friends who said it was excellent, so it does come recommended.
I probably would return to this hotel, it has a good location, approx 20 mins transfer from airport, not too close to the nightlife but easily accessible.
Nightmare - checking in a Rhodes airport, the reps haven’t a clue what they are doing, only had 30 mins in duty free, so would prob advise to buy goods in resort.

Sep 2007, Miss N BBird

The hotel was really big and spacious, inside it had a reception, restaurant, bar, shop, TV room and resting areas.
Outside has a big shared pool with waterfalls, a nice bar with dining area as well as entertainment area. The hotel was located right on the high street, so 5 min walk and you’re at beach, loads of shops and bars.
The hotel restaurant served a buffet every day with variety of food. I must say considering there was a lot of different food e.g. kids meals, pasta, salad, meat, fish, veg, soup, bread ... not all of it was a nice as it looked.
I would say it’s passable but you would have thought for a 4 class hotel it would be more gourmet food and a better service instead of helping yourself.
The room we had was double, we have a double bed, and 2 singles bed so we could sleep 4. It was a bit tight passing around the beds but the wardrobe compensated that as it was enough to store 4 people’s clothes.
Faliraki itself was a nice place to go to there was enough bars and club to visit I recommend the bed club and Georges bar as the staff were really lively and entertaining. The best night I had was the foam party at bed club there was loads of foams and it was loads of fun!
Early June wasn’t majorly busy but we didn’t mind we all enjoy ourselves. There a few take away places that are open late along the high street or during the day McDonalds by the beach. There are 3 great bars to go to for English food and there English breakfast was delicious. The beach is nice golden sand and sea wasn’t that cold.
The great thing to do for a different day is rent a quad bike out for a day and take a trip into Rhodes town centre its lovely!!

Sep 2007, Mr Gary Bicker

This hotel was amazing and for a first holiday abroad I was sad to leave. Ok so the food is a bit weird but it gets you trying it, and I would never imagine trying half of the things I did.
Our room was amazing, great view overlooking the pool and onto the ocean, and the maid service is great.
Spent most of our days lying by the pool and the animation team were great getting everyone involved in daily activities from water polo to dancing to the hotel club song (which I’m still singing along to). The other staff were excellent, quick bar service, brilliant range of drinks included in the all inclusive option, def had my fair share of cocktails.
The My Travel Rep - Nicky - was amazing, went on a bar crawl with her and the rest of the My Travel team and guests from other hotels and it is one of the best nights out I’ve ever been on.
The evening activities were brilliant, mini disco I loved it. ended up buying the cd and its addictive.. some special nights for the weekends, I would never have imagined I would have been Greek dancing one night, singing karaoke the next, then stripping to my underwear and up on stage dancing the hotel club song...
I loved this holiday and would consider going back. Hotel sun palace and the My Travel team - I Thank You.

Just returned for the Sun Palace...
10 / 10
Sep 2007, Miss K Connor

Just returned for the Sun Palace hotel in Faliraki and I cannot believe how some reviewers have rated it less than 8/10. We will be going next year as we were so impressed with the place.
We stayed in room 109 which was close to the pool and had our own terrace with table and chairs. The room was clean, very spacious but pretty basic. It had a large TV, fridge, hairdryer, safe, shower and bath - perfect really. The air con wasn't loud, it was like any other and it is vital considering the temperatures of a night are well into the 20s.
The hotel was amazing. It has a games room for the kids and big kids (men), internet, mini market, indoor bar, restaurant and best of all the huge swimming pool. The pool is very clean and sun beds are always available even if you wake at midday. There are plenty of activities for everyone who is interested; French bowls, table tennis, tennis, football, water aerobics, water polo and darts, all arranged by the animation team who are fantastic and work their balls off from morning to night.
Now the food. I went with my boyfriend who won’t try anything new and won’t eat anything other than English or Italian food. If this is the case, don’t be boring and stay in Blackpool. I on the other hand will try anything and in my opinion the food was amazing.
There was Greek, Italian, Chinese, French, German and English food on offer even though the English food wasn’t as good as home (obviously) and I think this is people’s problem. Between meal times there are always decent snacks on offer and plenty of ice-cream which is delicious :) Free drinks all day and night, you can't go wrong there.
The only problem is insect bites, take lots of cream and good luck!

Well I just got back from a fantastic...
10 / 10
Sep 2007, Miss R Alexander

Well I just got back from a fantastic holiday at Sun Palace Hotel, at first I was dreading it having read the reviews left here and I’m glad to say they were wrong.
The hotel is big, spacious and clean. The cleaners came everyday to clean our rooms and left us clean towels even on Sundays, we were in room 120 beside the pool and back gate, it had a 5* air conditioning system, flat screen TV, big fridge, safe & hair dryer, the room looked basic but had everything you would need and most importantly it was clean.
The swimming pool was massive and clean, there are two water falls to add attraction to the pool and there were always loads of sun beds free at any time of the day (as we're not early risers this was good).
The food was always nice with a wide selection of different things on offer mainly Greek food, pasta was always on offer as was meat and fish, with a wide selection of salad and fruit, I'm a very picky eater but always had loads to eat and it was always warm. The drink wasn't watered down it was the same as the bars down the street (Greek vodka may be weaker than Smirnoff but not watered down); they always had a nice range of cocktails on offer I recommend the Green Valley.
The marble reception is very impressive as is the rest of the hotel. The animation team were great they worked from early morning till midnight and were always friendly the whole team work very hard. The team bent over backwards to help people as did the other staff, they always invited you to join in on the activities but were never pushy.
There will be ants in the ground floor apartments but this is normal as everywhere in Greece have them and I can safely say I never seen a wasp or cockroach.
Sofia’s excursions opposite the hotel is highly recommended as they’re the cheapest around, they even insisted on leaving us to our trips to make sure we got there ok and showed us where to get the bus back. They’re a husband and wife team and are so friendly, we booked a 3hr Sofia’s cruise with them for €25 it took you around all the bays where you could go snorkelling each bay had something different to see, all drinks and fruit were included in the price it was brilliant.
We also booked to go scuba diving which cost €40 it was an amazing experience you went approximately 7 metres deep and had your photo taken feeding the fish, my boyfriend isn’t a strong swimmer so he was nervous about this and he loved it too. We also hired quads for the Sunday and went around Rhodes old town it was brilliant but be warned the taxi’s hates scooters and quads so a lot of accidents occur.
The hire company’s only offer standard insurance in the hire cost as this is only 3rd party, it’s important you pay the extra €10 to get fully comprehensive to cover yourself as accidents do happen frequently.
The hotel is only situated approximately 300 yards from Club Street (which is a lot nicer than bar street) and the clubs stay open until 6am. I recommend you visit Kelly’s Irish bar and let Liam entertain you, also Bedrock, George’s & King Arthur’s these three do lovely cocktails, my favourite was tropical paradise. If your looking to eat out in the evenings Oprah is delicious, it looks fancy from the outside and is lovely inside, you sit on the top floor with an open roof while a piano plays for you, the food is delicious and isn’t that expensive (same price as other restaurants).
Well I think that’s everything covered I thoroughly enjoyed this holiday and could’ve stayed another week, I can safely say I will go back.
