We've been there during Christmas 2009.
A lot of old people not really good for us as we are mid-twenties.
Hotel is old style, rooms are VERY basic, only bed, wardrobe and couple of cupboards. No tv, kettle.... nothing.
Beautiful view from balcony.
Food wasnt good and waiters was very moody guys.
I WOULD NEVER GO THERE AGAIN.

Management response from Fernando, Manager 25 Mar 2009

We thank you for your comments and suggestions after your experience in our hotel, but would also like to clear out some details contained in your review which could lead to misunderstandings: - Our hotel was built on the site of a 19th century country house, but the building itself is representative of the 60’s, rather than the 70’s. It has seen many refurbishments since then, but we definitely want to keep that old-world atmosphere. - Part of the ambiance of our hotel is based on simplicity, so we provide our guests with basic, yet comfortable accommodation at very affordable prices. - We do cater to guests of all ages, but it is true that mature couples tend to enjoy our hotel particularly. However, our hotel is perfect for those seeking relaxation in a wonderful setting, no matter their age. - The occupancy during your visit was much lower than the usual one in February, but floors 5 to 10 still happened to be full. Anyway, I do not understand your comments in that sense and the importance this could have. - The cost of a small bottle of orange juice is 1.80 € and house wine 7.00 €. There is also a wide choice of wine between 9-12.00 €, as well as half bottles for 5.50-6.50 €. - There was no problem with our credit card machine, but with your card or account. Otherwise you could have gone to an ATM machine and retrieve some money without any further issues, but you did not. We do accept sterling as a form of payment, but not coins, which is what you had. - The fact of someone not doing what you want does not necessarily involve that he or she be racist. We at the Miramar are extremely flexible and empathic, especially when unexpected and undesired situations occur. But the guest’s attitude plays a very important role, and the only “solution” offered by yourself was not to pay the bill because you had no money. No further concern was shown or suggestion was made. At this point, considering your indifference, the reception staff advised about the possibility of calling the police. - When travelling it is extremely important to always keep some extra money untouched (or at least a valid credit card), just in case of an emergency. Any awful stress due to not having done so was your sole responsibility. - While it is true that the final bill with your last call was for an amount of almost 24.00 €, we just took the original 19.20 €. You know that nobody laughed or mentioned the police. Our guests’ comments and suggestions are more than welcome, for there is always room for improvement and we like to know when we succeed in our aims and when we do not. However, I personally think that criticism should always be done respecting the actual facts and events, as there is no point in making any changes or additions to the actual happenings when a comment is done with good will.

Shabby but not chic the Miramar would benefit from a makeover. The majority of our fellow guests were middle/old aged Spaniards who expressed obvious disdain for non Spanish guests. The staff, whilst it must be said carried out their jobs to an acceptable standard, were... more

Enjoyed our stay at the Miromar
We have just returned from our holiday to Tenerife, Puerto De La Cruz, Staying at the hotel Miramar. We enjoyed our stay, the food was fine, the hotel was clean. The hotel is set in lovely surroundings we would go back again. Mr & Mrs D
Oh My God!!!
Me and my partner of 4 years decided to book a late holiday in Tenerife for a week as we had never been away as a couple before. I have to say i was very excited at the prospect of spending a week at a luxurious hotel in nice sunny weather. Well, what a disapointment! On arrival we had to wait 15 minutes for a member of staff at reception to deal with us. We were shown where the lift was, as we got in the lift with our luggage the lift in fact came to holt as soon as the doors closed, we were offered no assistance whatsoever and had to carry our luggage up 3 flights of stairs with no assistance. The hotel staff were unfriendly, we made various complaints to both staff and the Thomas Cook Representative but they were of no use whatsoever. The food was very poor, it was as if it was heated up constantly, the main courses consisted of eggs and fried bananas! The pool was rotten, the water was ice cold, dirty and the tiles around the pool were cracked and extremely unsafe. The changing rooms by the pool were filthy, smelly and full of flies. We complained on several occasions but nothing was ever done. We were told we were staying at a popular hotel for our age group when in fact the average age was 75! The night entertainment was poor, it consisted of one night of bingo and a geriatric on a banjo! I was very self-concious when sunbathing beside the pool, so spent most of our time away from the hotel. We asked to move to another hotel but were informed that we would have to pay a further £200! What an insult!!! Hasten to add - we will never be visiting this hotel again! I hope you enjoy your stay more than we ever did!!!!!
Good Value
We have just returned from a 'late deal' break to Puerto de la Cruz where we stayed at The Miramar Hotel. The hotel is situated at the top of a hill from which there are good views of the town and port. The walk down is through man-made gardens but the climb back is steep and fairly difficult for those in the retired age bracket. The hotel provides a curtesy bus which always appeared at the appointed times. It is not available after 18.00 hours on weekdays, and not at all at weekends. However a local taxi only costs 3-4 euro for 4 people . The hotel itself is spacious with 2 sitting lounges, a bar lounge, a games room and a fairly large foyer with very comfortable couches and armchairs. Entertainment, which ended around 23.00 hours, was provided most nights. The buffet tables at breakfast and dinner were heavily laden with a large variety of hot and cold foods which should suit all tastes. All staff were courteous and helpful to everyone. The grounds were colourful and well maintained. There were plenty of loungers around the pool while the gardens contained a number of leafy trees which provided natural shelter when the sun was too hot. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who wanted a relaxing hotel in beautiful peaceful surroundings, with the added bonus of good wholesome food.
A welcome warm break
My wife and I stayed for one week at the Miramar. The hotel was better than we expected from the reviews we had read. Although several of the guests complained about the food all served 'buffet style' we had no complaints whatsoever. An extensive choice of hot and cold meals for all meals.(Our view was that they expected 4 star luxury for 2 star prices). (THe Hotel is worthy of its 3 Stars. It is in an enviable position, set in gardens with plenty of free sunbeds and space to place them without encroaching on others space. The main problen is it is at the top of a steep hill. The town is below the hill and is reached by either walking down 200 plus steps through an enchanting Japanese garden with waterfall (in front of the Casino)or walking down the footpath of a gradual decending road. We NEVER walked back to the hotel - it was much less traumatic to catch one of the many available Taxis who would deposit you at the door for around 3 Euros (£2)- worth every penny. The Hotel position and town would not be recommended for guests with mobilty problems. We would recommend both the hotel and the resort and hope to return to both in the not to distant future.
Don't expect too much here
We arrived lunchtime and were met at reception by a very nice guy who supplied all the info and gave us our room key 103 - ground floor, when I asked if there were rooms on higher floors he then checked saw we were staying for 14 nights and guarenteed we could change to the 3rd floor the next day and that is what happened 308. Just as well as 103 was dark and dreary with chocolate brown carpet throughout which also went half way up the walls. The room had 3 beds (2 adults and a child) 1 of th adult beds mattress was so worn that it had no support whatsoever, same with the childs bed. The lights (if you are unfortunate to stay in this room) would have to be perminately on. The hotel is an old country house with lovely high ceiled public rooms but there is a air of faded gentility about the whole hotel. The staff, with the exception of the young man on reception, were sullen, unhelpful and morose. The worst ones being in the dining room. The total staff we counted in the dining room at any one time was 4 who argued and shouted at top volume every mealtime and woe betide any diner who askes for a table to be reset it is a wonder that the 'china' are not shattered the manner in which they were thrown around. The food was poor - plenty of salads in the evening but the meals were 'cheap' food. The breakfast fayre was no better and we were surprise to hear that they only started providing eggs for breakfast as recently as 10 years ago! the food was never hot Oh try the icecream 4 choices and different colours - all tasted the same though! and as for the term buffet service - forget it - it should be cafeteria service most guests who have been going to this hotel year after year clear their own leftover food, cutlery, plates etc from the tables when they leave. The bar is large, dark and unwelcoming - the decor is dark red, light bulbs missing plus the surly bar staff. We ate out quite a few evenings, which when you have booked for half board this is not something that you have bugeted for. The good points? I struggle to find them although the garden is a joy and beautifully kept but the pool although a good size needs to be refurbished as do the changing room round the pool, doors not fitting, showers broken, rust around maintenance hatch etc. The whole hotel needs a desperate overhaul and the pity is that it is purely cosmetic as the setting is lovely - although I was a little surprised at the rather large painting in the reception which I query as to whether its content is suitable for a 'family' hotel.
Disappointing
We booked this holiday last minute when our Mexico trip was cancelled due to the hurricane. We had never been to Tenerife before, so it was pot luck. It wasn't particularly cheap and we didn't think it worth the money. The weather in the north of the island is nowhere near as sunny and hot as the south, which was our first mistake. Although Puerto Cruz was pleasant it was almost always cloudy. The hotel was a true 3-star, horrible room (get one of the renovated ones if you can - ours, on the 4th(reception) floor was VERY basic), very poor evening meals in a canteen-like dining room - breakfast was OK, just. Oh, and they charge THREE EUROS for a glass of ice! There are not many nearby places to eat or drink, as it is set in gardens high up and is a long walk down to, and especially back from, town. IF I ever went to Tenerife again, I would probably choose Los Gigantes, which seemed pleasant and sunny.
lovely hotel
Me and My Friend got this hotel as late deal we were very anxious arriving at 3 in the morning but must say we where pleasantly surprised. The hotel was clean and bright. Our room was massive we stayed in a three star in miami in January and compared to the miramar it looked like a 1 star. The room had 2 single bed 2 chairs and a lovely sofa bed thing. We where in room 801 up the top it was lovely being so high up when it got too hot at the pool we would go sit on the balcony lovely and cool. We had really nice views of mount tiede and also the sea. There was little noise at night so you wont have any probs sleeping. My only moan really would be the "entertainment" it was very bad go out to thatchers the irish pub and have a night with phil the irish rover great night and cheap booze. The food was ok although we went out for dinner twice. Pomodoro at the harbour was lovely for 2 pizzas some garlic bread and some drinks 15 euros bargain! I liked puerto de la cruz theres nightlife if you want it but a great place for families and people looking to relax.
Beautiful, but dreadful food
The location is excellent, with views over the mountains and down to the port. The rooms were well decorated and there was a feeling of slightly faded grandeur about the public areas. The pool was beautiful, as were the gardens, which were very well maintained. Unfortunately, the food was appalling. We ate out regularly because, although we enjoy regional cuisine, the standard in the hotel was simply not good enough. The salads were acceptable, but the main courses and puds were a real let down. I had concerns about the safety of the ice-cream because the scoops were left in dirty water for the entire night. The staff were very pleasant and despite the meals (very good for the waistline) we would consider returning for an out-of-season break.
A very relaxing week!
I booked this holiday for my husband and our daughters aged 16 & 19 just a week before departure. It was a late booking and not strictly our choice. I immediately went home and checked out the Miramar on the Internet and some of the views that I read concerned me and in the end was very apprehensive about out holiday. We arrived at the hotel at 6:00 am to be met by a jolly chap on reception who realised that we were very tired and kept formalities to a minimum. Although the brochure stated that rooms had either sea views or views of the mountains ours were 2 floors below reception and looked out over the gardens we also had a balcony & safe. The hotel is set in lovely gardens with a super pool and very handy pool bar. All we wanted to do was rest and rest we cetainly did in very relaxing surroundings. There is a casino opposite but if nobody told you, you wouldn't know it was there. The hotel ran a minibus service to and from town. It was most reliable to us but I understand from others that when it didn't appear the receptionist arranged taxis. The food was plentiful, many salads and we all managed to find something to satisfy us although some guests did seem to moan. It must be remembered that we were were in a foreign country! All in all we had a cracking time, just what the doctor ordered however if you like tvs, hairdryers, minibars and bags of noisey entertainment then the Miramar isn't the place for you.
home from home
We have been going to this hotel every winter for about 14 years. We meet the same people every year. The staff are mostly the same as they were all those years ago, and are very friendly and helpful. However we often have problems finding out which tour companies, if any, are selling holidays here.
