Dont Go there. Really !

Oct 2010, Jurek

We've been there during Christmas 2009.
A lot of old people not really good for us as we are mid-twenties.
Hotel is old style, rooms are VERY basic, only bed, wardrobe and couple of cupboards. No tv, kettle.... nothing.
Beautiful view from balcony.
Food wasnt good and waiters was very moody guys.
I WOULD NEVER GO THERE AGAIN.

Stepping into this hotel was like stepping back into the 1980's - no complementary bottles of water offered even after 10 hours of travelling. As we arrived during the night, we had to wait until morning before we could get something to drink! No kettle, fridge, hairdryer, tv or radio in rooms - only twin beds are available - which is fine if you're not travelling with your partner.
Rooms smell of dampness and offer the sound of constant dripping.
Lift can realistically accommodate 2 people and one small suitcase at any given time.
Food is atrocious - stale, greasy, watered down, bland, unsuitable for vegetarians (unless they want to live on salad). Drinks at evening meal have to be paid for and are served by moody waiters.
Hotel is situated on the top of a hill, which is fine but street lights are not working so you will have to walk down to the town centre in pitch blackness, avoiding cars where possible.
The hotel is dated and furnishings are very worn. I would recommend that you avoid this hotel if at all possible.

Stepping into this hotel was like stepping back into the 1980's. No complementary water was on offer (after 10 hrs travelling). As we arrived during the night, we had to wait until morning before being able to get something to drink. Rooms only have twin beds, which is fine if you're not travelling with your partner! The rooms do not have any facilities, such as you would expect to find in any 21st century hotel - including budget hotels, such as fridge, kettle, hairdryer, tv or or radio.
Rooms are drab and as long as you don't mind the smell of dampness in this dated and worn hotel and the incessent sound of dripping from outside your room then you'll love it.
Lift is tiny and can realistically only accommodate 2 people and one small suitcase at any one time - so be warned.
Food is atrocious - bland, stale, decomposing, greasy, not suitable for vegetarians. You have to pay for drinks with your evening meal - which are served by the moody waiters.
Hotel looks lovely from the outside but very different on the inside. Built on a hill, it is relatively easy to get to the town centre, as long as you don't mind walking on the road in pitch blackness to reach it (street lights are out).

myself and female friend stayed at the mirmar hotel....on arrival we noticed no one else was there......!!!! this 1970 style hotel...which hasnt seen a refurbishment since then ..we squeeze into a one man and a bag lift....to the 9th floor...thern had to lugg our cases up to 10th lol...via another flight of stairs the room was large but very basic..twin beds which where like camper beds no tv no blankets apart from two prison sheets. a amazin view as we where so high...we notice from 5 th floor noone apart from us was there....the reception staff was very rude, and rasict! also the food was a nitemare meals on wheels would be the best way of describing....and lots of salad no hot meats at all..the cost of a glass of orange juice 3.80 euro cmon and house wine 9.90 euros which was really bad. also the staff on last day pqr machine wasnt working to yake final payment of 19.80 euros and we had nomore cash apart from sterling...the staff immediately treated us like criminals...and said they'll calll the police... had my friend in tears our tranfer came and lift we basically was stuck! we then had to walk in to town to see if we could draw over counter like reception said... which we could nt as not spanish national...we luckly saw a friend and lent the money.........alll this stress was awful for 19 euros....lol we then contacted julie our tour operater and she luckily arranged another tranfer and luckily our flight was delayed then we returned to hotel julie paid our taxi bless her....the hotel then was laughing staying that the call we last maDE IN LOBBY TO BANK HAS BEEN ADDED NOW 24 EUROS AND I ONLY HAD 22 !!! Management response from Fernando, Manager 25 Mar 2009

We thank you for your comments and suggestions after your experience in our hotel, but would also like to clear out some details contained in your review which could lead to misunderstandings: - Our hotel was built on the site of a 19th century country house, but the building itself is representative of the 60’s, rather than the 70’s. It has seen many refurbishments since then, but we definitely want to keep that old-world atmosphere. - Part of the ambiance of our hotel is based on simplicity, so we provide our guests with basic, yet comfortable accommodation at very affordable prices. - We do cater to guests of all ages, but it is true that mature couples tend to enjoy our hotel particularly. However, our hotel is perfect for those seeking relaxation in a wonderful setting, no matter their age. - The occupancy during your visit was much lower than the usual one in February, but floors 5 to 10 still happened to be full. Anyway, I do not understand your comments in that sense and the importance this could have. - The cost of a small bottle of orange juice is 1.80 € and house wine 7.00 €. There is also a wide choice of wine between 9-12.00 €, as well as half bottles for 5.50-6.50 €. - There was no problem with our credit card machine, but with your card or account. Otherwise you could have gone to an ATM machine and retrieve some money without any further issues, but you did not. We do accept sterling as a form of payment, but not coins, which is what you had. - The fact of someone not doing what you want does not necessarily involve that he or she be racist. We at the Miramar are extremely flexible and empathic, especially when unexpected and undesired situations occur. But the guest’s attitude plays a very important role, and the only “solution” offered by yourself was not to pay the bill because you had no money. No further concern was shown or suggestion was made. At this point, considering your indifference, the reception staff advised about the possibility of calling the police. - When travelling it is extremely important to always keep some extra money untouched (or at least a valid credit card), just in case of an emergency. Any awful stress due to not having done so was your sole responsibility. - While it is true that the final bill with your last call was for an amount of almost 24.00 €, we just took the original 19.20 €. You know that nobody laughed or mentioned the police. Our guests’ comments and suggestions are more than welcome, for there is always room for improvement and we like to know when we succeed in our aims and when we do not. However, I personally think that criticism should always be done respecting the actual facts and events, as there is no point in making any changes or additions to the actual happenings when a comment is done with good will.

I bought a " Glenfiddoch " in the bar...
4 / 10
Mar 2008, Mr Jn Lochridge

I bought a " Glenfiddoch " in the bar and it was whisky coloured, not clear with a yellowish tinge as it should be!! The staff were insistant that it was glenfiddoch. they did'nt / would'nt understand not all whiskies are the same.
We found the pervious statements to be absolutely accurate, dated , tired, surly staff,
bland food, only 3 - 4 euros for a taxi back but it does add up over the holiday.
the room was tidied and clean towels every day. we and others had problems with the swipe cards for the doors not working but reception changed them no bother.
drinks are not supplied with the evening meal you have to pay?? am I wrong should'nt board include tea or coffee.
there are no parasols at the pool just loungers and wee tables, strange.
evening entertainment in the bar was abismal one guy keyboard gloomy tunes.
No T.V. in rooms or fridges or hairdryers.
Not terrible but very mediocre.

We stayed at this holiday on 21st...
2 / 10
Jan 2008, Mrs P Russell

We stayed at this holiday on 21st December for Xmas. This hotel is not recommended for children, the English, anyone with walking difficulties or women who travel on their own.
The staff are unfriendly - food bland and cold - no facilities within the hotel you cannot buy a paper no tea or coffee facilities or TV’s in rooms no room service. (as an example Xmas eve bar shuts at 8.30pm no way of getting a hot or cold drink until 8am following morning).
You are not allowed to put sunbeds on the grass area around the pool. The path to the pool bar is very slippery when wet. The crazy golf course has more holes and bits of rusty metal it is unplayable.
Within the hotel there is steps everywhere even to the pool bar which is the only place you can get a drink or food during the day.
The hotel is situated at the top of a hill which you have to descend plus 265 steps which are crumbling away covered in moss, no hand rails and totally unlit and unsafe at night to walk down or up, when you have conquered the steps you then have another decline to descend.
The town of Puerto de la Cruz is so quite do not expect there to be any life it is so quiet and shops are tourist or geared towards the Spanish.

Like the previous review writer I was...

Like the previous review writer I was expecting the worst going to this hotel. I traveled with my son 7yrs, my mum 80yrs and myself 45, so we cover all categories. My mum said that if we go expecting Fawlty Towers at least it will give us a laugh. On our arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a very friendly helpful receptionist. Our room again was very spacious, clean and fresh. Our balcony overlooked the garden and pool with lovely views to the sea and distant coastline plus the vast views of the hills.
Having read that the restaurant staff miserable, we greeted them with our beaming holiday smiles which were quite easily returned. They briefly explained that we could sit anywhere and help ourselves to the food. There were several choices.
Any complaints written about the food at this hotel baffles me. It makes me wonder what people are expecting. I cannot think what else could have been served to satisfy them? It also makes sense that if service starts from 6.30 till 9pm, then don’t get there late and expect it to still be fresh!
The grounds are spectacular. The pool was chilly on our arrival but as we acclimatized to the weather the water temperature became refreshing. The weather was good to us too, day time temperatures were never below 26deg and highest was 36deg. Out of our 14 day trip we had one day which was overcast, a welcome breather to be honest.
It is a fair trek down to the town, there is the steps (200+) but taken steady are fine or you can walk down the winding road there is pavement all the way down. The steps are found below the front of the big Casino Hotel (casino no longer operating). At least try them once as there is a wonderful waterfall that you shouldn’t miss.
Taxis back up are no more than 3 Euros and taxi drivers are all very helpful. The town is quaint, colourful and the whole place reminded me of a cross between Cornwall and the Bahamas.
We look forward to a return trip. It is a reasonably priced hotel. Don’t pay 3star prices and expect 5star luxury. Also greet and treat people how you would like to be treated, this is our family way. It works 99% of the time and through our holiday it was no exception. Hope you enjoy yours.

I have just returned from a holiday...

I have just returned from a holiday at Hotel Miramar. What can I say really.... I travelled with my partner and son who is aged 6. After checking the reviews of the hotel on this website we had concerns before going away. We arrived at the Hotel and checked in at reception, when we went to our room we could not believe the size of the room, it was huge.
The maximum people allowed per room is 3 but you could have easily have fitted another 2 beds in the room. It was basic but lovely. No TV and no fridge but we weren't too bothered about this. There is a safe in the room that can be hired.
Hotel Facilities: The swimming pool was a lovely size but be warned there isn't a shallow end for younger kids who are not strong swimmers. The hotel has a pool side bar serving food too.
There is a small children’s park with swings & slide and also the hotel has a crazy golf area and table tennis which was nice in the evening. There is also a private Jacuzzi which you can hire for private use and its really cheap.
Hotel Entertainment:
The evening entertainment isn't great but there are loads of small bars in town and if you can't face taking the stairs back up to the hotel don’t worry as a taxi is only 3 euros. Try the bingo night at the hotel as this was good fun!! Also a bus runs Mon - Fri 10 - 6 so that you can pop into the local supermarket or town.
Hotel Food:
The food was lovely and there wasn't anything horrible about it, however what I will say is that because you are there everyday you can become bored with the salad buffet. If you ever fancy having a night out to eat then you can ask the hotel to swap your dinner for lunch and they will.
We met some fantastic people on our holiday and had brilliant time with them. We would recommend Hotel Miramar to others.
I hope that this review helps.

Booked a last minute deal last year...
3 / 10
Aug 2006, Mr R Smith

Booked a last minute deal last year and got of to a good start by only paying £200 for 11 nights. Then things got worse.
The rooms was clean but like others have said the whole place is a little dated. The staff are at best surly and we weren't made to feel welcome at all, we managed to get about one smile from one of the guys once all the time we were there.
When we did get a smile we both nearly fell out of our chairs we were so shocked. Food is basic and there are some strange things being served - banana croquettes as a main?? The entertainment is basic, the best thing on offer was bingo. The parrot show was ok but don't bother getting your camera out or the parrots will disappear. The blokes running the show want you to buy their pictures so they’re not to keen to let you take your own.
The hotel is situated next to a casino at the top of a steep hill. We went a year ago and I think we counted about 250 steps between the casino and the road that leads into town. I'm young and quite fit so it wasn't a problem for me but be warned. The town centre is not up to much, not really much of a shopper but unless you like cuddly toys or Tenerife T-shirts then you'll be out of luck.
There is a mini bus that goes into town once an hour but it's not air conditioned and it gets very hot. I didn't bother going to the beach it looked too depressing. As some others have also said the views toward Mt. Tiede are quite impressive but they don't make up for the rest of the hotel unfortunately. My girlfriend and I are 27 and 28 if this makes a difference?

Shabby but not chic the Miramar would...
5 / 10
Apr 2006, Mrs L Wing

Shabby but not chic the Miramar would benefit from a makeover.
The majority of our fellow guests were middle/old aged Spaniards who expressed obvious disdain for non Spanish guests. The staff, whilst it must be said carried out their jobs to an acceptable standard, were rather sullen. The food left a lot to be desired, although the salad bar is impressive to look at. The buffet service becomes tiresome and often plates are not cleared between courses.
The swimming pool is salt water and is in need of resurfacing. The entertainment is very poor and aimed at the elderly Spanish guests. There are very few facilities for children. There is internet access however it is not broadband and is not too reliable which means you end up paying for time when the connection is lost.
The views of the sea and Mt. Tiede are very beautiful and the gardens are pleasant.
The resort itself has plenty to offer and if you seek out the better shops there are some lovely clothes and gorgeous shoes on offer as well as jewelry and good prices on perfume and aftershave, the suntan creams are cheaper than in England too, so wait and buy when you get there!
