Another Great Holiday
This is year number 5 in Peurto Rico and the 1st time at Cala Nova. Travelling with 2 friends and arranging to meet up with other Holiday Friends year after year is great and it always pleases me to come home and immediatley book for the following year. Now to the Cala Nova, on arrival we were given a room on the 1st floor even though we had requested a high floor room, I quickly returned to Reception and the room was moved to one on the 5th Floor this was much more acceptable as the view was great and I like to see whats happening (not that i'm nosey) The rooms are good sized, clean and have the ammenities you need, we did have to request extra pillows but this was dealt with quicklt and efficiently. The Kitchen was well equipped and served it's purpose and the balcony was of great size and enjoyed the sun from Lunchtime until early evening. The down side for us was the size of the Pool Area this was quite small the terrace and pool both. Even though it was January there were lots of families with children and it was always a problem to get a Sunbed unless you wanted to get up with the birds. This did'nt cause us a big problem as we had friends staying at another Apartment and we used the pool and terrace at their place, but it is useful to know that the pool and trerrace are quite small especially if the Hotel is busy. There was a small shop on site which was well stocked and was there if you needed it, along with a pooside bar which served food and drink at reasonable prices. very close to the resort and the beach, the Cala Nova is a great place to use as a base for your holiday in Peurto Rico and we would return (if the price is right)
Sorry not for us
We had a week here and had some hassles. Lot of people with badly behaved children( term time) ? Pool area slippery and pool seemed to be for use of teenage yobs, We had ist floor apt and couldn't sit out during day as people feeding pigeons and throwing stuff down from high floors. Apt was basic, towels and sheets past sell by date. had maid service 3 times ! entertainment cancelled 4 nights out of 7 as not enough people. Not the fault of apt management. Reception staff were helpful. A good location though , We loved the harbour area- hated commercial centre, found restaurant p.r. people very pushy to point of rudeness. We loved boat trip to mogan and indeed if we return that is where we would stay. Cala Nova too noisy, too full of kids, people having late night arguments and too basic for us.
Thanks a million
The Cala Nova was clean, with excellent efficient reception and bar staff. The room balcony was really large, with a great view of the sea to the left and the busy valley below - excellent when lit up at night. The room was adequate for the price. We were so pleased that, although it was a bit chilly in the morning until the sun came to that side of the valley, we could enjoy the warm evening slot in the sunshine between beach and meal. The harbour restaurants seemed better and the grill at El Greco Hotel was excellent with entertaining and welcoming staff. The ferry to the Port of Mogan was worthwhile and the VIP trip to see more of the island was OK but not sure about how it was VIP nor the suitability of the 4 course meal to all tastes. We were so pleased that we were not right at the top of the valley sides so the walk up was slighly aerobic, but not deadly. The shops were very close. The taxis are easy and cheap. (The steep-sloping ramps/steps at the entrance to the hotel would be fun in damp conditions?-Luckily, it stayed dry) The pool and the area for beds is woefully small but the beaches are 10 or 20 minutes walk away or taxi option could be used again. We prefered the softer sand of the harbour beach, but both are good. We got the obligatory followers of Germanic towel reservations around the pool (even though this is an all UK apartment) and when all beds were "towelled" it looked like you had to stepping-stone over them to throw or squeeze yourself in the pool or attack the bar. Luckily, the holiday rush hadn't filled the Cala Nova, but it was about to in the coming weeks! Overall a very enjoable break and great value for the money.
Heady Heights
Having previously stayed Puerto Rico for our Honeymoon we knew what to expect from the resort. The amount of money we had to spend was less than last time so we downsized to the Cala Nova, nevertheless we felt we had not compromised on too much. Rooms are a great size for 2, balcony is much larger than expected. Maids and Staff were friendly and helpful. We dreaded the climb[from reading other reviews] however this was not such a big deal for the not too fit but mobile. We did not stay around the apartment, as we preferred to get out and about. Amadores beach is highly recommended, its a great walk and the beach is much nicer as its manmade. Oscars Restaurant [down at the small marina] is a must for anyone who loves quality [not quantity] food and great service, my Husband is a chef and he highly recommends it...... The pool was supposed to be heated. but this had broken, so we went to the public pool which was colder than the sea and I would not recommend it. Just be aware of the 'timeshare' guys and gals, they can be annoying, just be polite or carry a danish newspaper!! They have saturdays off so there is no need to feel tense as you approach the Spar shop................ PS great weather..........27o
Basic and clean
If your looking for basic but clean then this is it. The rooms are a reasonable size and the kitchen area is well stocked. All the accommodation here is on a hill and ours was quite far up- but good exercise. If you have mobility probs then this is not for you. The pool is quite small so we spent most of our time on the very clean beaches. The staff in the hotel are very friendly and helpful. The bar prices are okay and the entertainment is interestting (lol). The shopping center (clubs and restaurants) is heavy going. We only went in there to get carry out food. Prices in there are okay too. We did the Surf and Turf Tour and whilst not cheap it was worth it to see the dolphins- The reps will tell you that they go off road but they dont. Oh and the verandahs are really big- We all enjoyed ourselves and would go back
Great Apartments, Great Location
I travelled here with my boyfriend and we were both pleasantly surprised. The apartment itself was very big and spacious. The cleaner came in about every second day or even every day, dont quite remember. The Cala Nova are in a great location. The pool was quite small so we walked everyday to the public pool beside the beach or the beach itself, both only about a 5 minute walk away. The large commercial centre where you fill find all the pubs clubs and restaurants were a 2 minute walk in the opposite direction. Both the beach and the commercial centre could be seen from our balcony. The apartments were great and we were really pleased however if travelling here in the summer months be aware that there is no air con and so rooms might get a bit warm!
Cheapest and 1 of the best
We were very pleased when we arrived at the Cala Nova apartments. First impression was clean and spacious with a great view and large balcony. Peurto Rico is buzzing day and night and noise can be heard from the night life well into the early hours. I had ear plugs as I am a light sleeper, so it was fine. The only problems we encountered were a family next door to us who argued after too much beer, and we had to get security at 3am. This happened several times, but it is not the fault of the Cala Nova just selfish people! There is aot of steps to the town centre and usually took us about 10 mins max. The beach is about the same time away. Puerto Rico has plenty of clean restaurants offering good food at good prices. The one we ate in most was the Miami Steak Bar, it was delicious every time. If you like Indian food the one we tried was on an upper level called the Happy Valley , not the same as home but near enough when you are mad about indian food as we are!! Cigarettes are about £10 for 200, perfume wasn't much cheaper than UK. There are alot of "looky looky" men. They are lovely and you can have good fun with them, and they take NO for an answer. Try the Cala Nova.
Ideal
Just back from the Cala Nova apartments in Gran Canaria yesterday and loved them. Have been to Puerto Rico 3 times now, and seem to be coming further and further down hill. There are still quite a few steps up to these apartments which may not be ideal for everyone (you can avoid the 130 (ish) steps by walking up the roadside). There's also a lift from the bottom of the hotel up to the poolside (handy for carting the cases back down!!) and a lift within the complex as there's 8 floors. The apartments themselves were small but clean, be warned when checking in, there is a list showing with items that can be hired, on the list there is a toaster, but this is already provided in your room. The staff are all friendly and maintenance is fast enough. We had problems with our toilet not flushing, reported it when heading shopping that day and when returned it was fixed, unfortunately it broke again just before heading out for the night, reported it at about 10pm and was fixed again the next morning when out sunbathing. The cleaners also do a good job, the room was cleaned 5 times in the week, and they even tidied things away for us/cleaned dishes as well as the basic mopping of floor etc. We've had isues in other apartments of things going missing, but i'm glad to say that we seem to have returned with everything this year!! Wasn't greatly impressed with towel/linen changes though, in the week, we were only given fresh towels once and the sheets weren't changed at all! I had enquired about this at reception, and appears to be standard! The pool is a fair enough size with a kids pool also, there are plenty of sunloungers, but unfortunately not a great deal of space in which to place them, so found ourselves having to get up early to bag a space! They do say that can use the Omar apartments poolside next door, but when looking in from our balcony the space didn't seem any better. The pool bar is also reasonable, with the snack bar, had no problems with the food served and was all cheap. They also do cocktails at the bar, which suited myself and 2 friends well! They also put entertainment on in the evenings, but didn't stay around to hear much, just caught part of a quiz one night and noticed on the board that they have tribute acts. They also put quite a few football games on also during the day. All in all a fantastic holiday, and my friend and I are now in search of a cheap deal for January/February, due to being depressed at returning to the Scottish weather!!
i love it the entertainment is brill!!!!!!!!!!!
the hotel was brilliant as was the staff and the entertainment .The staff are so polite and very enjoyable to talk too, i will definatly come back ,becca is fab what i nice girl!! lol miss ya all !
Clean and friendly, great for a quiet break
Just come back from the Cala Nova. Great 3 star accommodation - very clean, friendly staff, they work hard at entertaining you. Food at the pool bar is simple and tasty. Downsides - as several other people have mentioned the pool is small - no chance of a proper swim. The pool area is fairly crowded - you need to get down early, and there are only five or six umbrellas, which is a problem in the extreme heat in the middle of the day. The apartment was a good size for 2 people and well equipped, but would have been crowded for the suggested 4 people it is supposed to hold. Puerto Nova is a fairly small resort (doesn't look like there was anything there before the hotels were built), with not much to do outside of the hotels apart from a couple of mini-golf parks - although there is a large waterpark under construction. Everything revolves around the commercial centre which is about 2 minutes walk from the Cala Nova - there you will have to dodge the countless reps trying to get you into the bars. Some of the restaurants are of a decent standard - down by the harbour, I'd recommend Rhodos Palace - a fantastic Greek restaurant, and in the commerical centre, Pinocchio's - a good quality Italian. Some of the other places we tried had very poor food and surly staff - I'd recommend avoiding most of the beachfront bars, and definitely stay away from the Mau Mau in the commercial centre who nearly gave us food poisoning. All in all, would recommend the apartments to anyone looking for a quiet break, or who like to stay around the hotels, but the resort was a bit too quiet for us.
