Our initial impression of the Cala...

"Our initial impression of the Cala Nova was very impressive. On arrival we had no delay getting to our room and despite not arriving until around 12.30am the small shop in reception was still open allowing us to get essentials. A giant bottle of water is just 1.10 Euros! The room was nice, clean and tidy and the view from the huge balcony amazing! We stayed in a 1 bed apartment, on the 6th floor 2 adults and 2 children age 9 and 10.

Could maybe a done with a little more room in the living/kitchen area as it did feel like we were in each others pockets at times. The kitchen was very basic with just two cooking rings which restricted what we could cook. We also had a kettle. You can also hire all the usual stuff fans, microwave, TV etc from reception. There was only one wardrobe for the four of us. Maid service was exceptional, they clean and make the beds every day but Sunday and Tuesday and they even wash the dishes. There is just the one lift but although it was a little slow sometimes it only broke once and it was promptly fixed the next day.

We was a little worried about the Kids Club after having a bad experience last year with another holiday company but the kids soon had their faith restored by Giggly Gill and had a great time with her. The kids club room is a nice bright safe environment with air conditioning. The entertainment at the hotel was very basic, there is a German girl who was looking after this. I think perhaps we arrived a week before she had got things properly organised as things were very hit a miss the first week which was a shame. The second week there was a timetable of activities displayed this consisted of the usual killer pool, water polo, Jenga whilst my one son loved it the rest of us didn't felt she lacked motivation and it was generally the same few people (mostly a few young lads a couple of blokes) that took part. This usually finished by around 3pm. Then there was nothing until 10.30pm, this could have started earlier as it was a big gap for a young family. Then there would usually be a singer which was a bit boring for the children. There was a kids disco advertised at 9pm which would have been great but this only happened on 1 night which was a shame.

The poolside was very competitive, it was quite amusing watching the same people each morning before 9am all appearing like little ants to 'grab' the same spot around the pool each day. They would reserve their sun lounger and reappear a couple of hours later! It was a little unfair and I assume complaints were made as the rep introduced a one hour rule saying they would remove towels. The loungers were also then chained up so all the little 'ants' had to wait until the maintenance man unchained the loungers at 9am, they would still be there though following him round...sad! If it got too busy round the pool you are able to use the pool in the Omar next door, the Omar tended to house younger couples/groups of boys/girls, their pool didn't seem to get busy until around lunch time.

When we first arrived the pool was beautifully clear and clean and you could see the tiles at the bottom. As the week went on the pool got very cloudy and dirty, after speaking to the rep we saw the maintenance man cleaning the pool each day. Would definitely recommend the night out at Fibber Mcgees 18 Euros each for adults and children free. Then an all inclusive bar for everyone. This was our best night out as we all had fun, the reps combined entertainment for the children and for the adults keeping us all happy and able to relax, the kids also got to feel grown up being in a night club and fetching their own drinks from the bar! Also a great place to get a breakfast is upstairs in the commercial centre there are about 3 different places where it costs around 1.70 euros!

There is also what we think is a German supermarket towards the end of the commercial centre downstairs called Herdisa, they are much cheaper than Spar and Netto they have wine 75cents and giant bags of doritos 1.30 Euro. Also nice bread and cheap beer, they also have a butcher and fruit/veg shop. You can get a taxi there very easily and the drivers are all in green uniform and very friendly. PS there is a great eat as much as you like Chinese buffet restaurant in the Europa Centre (3 euros in a taxi) called Mr XU It was 4.80 euro for adults and 2.50 for children, what a bargain!

Food was always nice but perhaps not as much to choose from as some of the other Chinese buffets. We was also a little poorly with bad throats etc the first week and the chemist in the commercial centre speak good English. All in all nice friendly clean place, would possibly go again. Beach and most other things including the water park is a 10 minute walk away, though be prepared for all the steps.

My partner and I along with our two...

"My partner and I along with our two children have stayed at the Cala Nova for the past three years and are going again this July. The reason for this is it's just a fantastic place to stay.

We are not a conventional couple, read into that what you will. The other guests and more importantly the staff at the hotel made us as a family unit extremely welcome, they literally couldn't do enough for us and absolutely nothing was too much trouble for them.

All of the staff at Cala Nova would go out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. A lift to the hotel complex can be reached by a small slope which would be ideal for less energetic people or wheelchair users. Otherwise a stairway is the other route up to the apartments.

There is a medium sized pool with attached paddling pool. The night time entertainment is of an adequate quality and for those that don't take life too seriously the karaoke night provides much laughter. The apartments are always kept spotlessly clean by the housekeeping staff and they always greet you with a polite “Hola” and a warm smile.

The view from the hotel is great, it overlooks the gorge/valley and is far enough away from the restaurants and bars to not keep you awake at night but is also close enough for it not to be a problem walking down there.

The many restaurants in the main centre cater for many different tastes and there are also supermarkets and shops selling most items that may be needed. If you are looking for a resort that has all that a young or older family for that matter need then you won't go far wrong with Puerto Rico and if you want to stay at a great hotel then you would be doing yourselves an injustice if you didn't try the Cala Nova.

Happy holidays!

Had a fab holiday at the Cala Nova...

"Had a fab holiday at the Cala Nova apartments. They are just far enough away from the hustle and bustle but near enough if you want stroll down into town.

The rooms were clean and the staff were extremely friendly. I think the room was cleaned every day and some days we had to turn the maids away! Its perfect for families and Rebecca kept the children entertained morning and night, she works so hard and the kids loved her!

Probably the only thing which I would say is that the pool side when wet gets extremely slippery and my 6 years fell quite a few times (and a few adults too). It could probably benefit from some non-slip tiles applying to save a real accident happening.

We will definitely be planning another trip to the Cala Nova apartments.

I think that this is a great place...

"I think that this is a great place four families you just can’t go wrong I would recommend it to any one the food was great and so was the prices the entertainment was fabulous.

All the staff are really friendly and do any thing to try and help you the cleaners are always cleaning so there’s not a piece of fluff on the floor the Cala Nova apartments is right near the beach pubs and everything else so you don’t have to walk miles. there is a water park in walking distance are you can go to the one in Maspalomas to can ring the taxi at the hotel and they pick you up right outside of the hotel.

The pool is great kids are in it 20- 4- 7 so you can relax and sunbath by the pool so what you waiting four if you haven’t booked up book up now it will be the time of you life.

Clean and friendly, great for a quiet break

"Just come back from the Cala Nova. Great 3 star accommodation - very clean, friendly staff, they work hard at entertaining you. Food at the pool bar is simple and tasty. Downsides - as several other people have mentioned the pool is small - no chance of a proper swim. The pool area is fairly crowded - you need to get down early, and there are only five or six umbrellas, which is a problem in the extreme heat in the middle of the day. The apartment was a good size for 2 people and well equipped, but would have been crowded for the suggested 4 people it is supposed to hold. Puerto Nova is a fairly small resort (doesn't look like there was anything there before the hotels were built), with not much to do outside of the hotels apart from a couple of mini-golf parks - although there is a large waterpark under construction. Everything revolves around the commercial centre which is about 2 minutes walk from the Cala Nova - there you will have to dodge the countless reps trying to get you into the bars. Some of the restaurants are of a decent standard - down by the harbour, I'd recommend Rhodos Palace - a fantastic Greek restaurant, and in the commerical centre, Pinocchio's - a good quality Italian. Some of the other places we tried had very poor food and surly staff - I'd recommend avoiding most of the beachfront bars, and definitely stay away from the Mau Mau in the commercial centre who nearly gave us food poisoning. All in all, would recommend the apartments to anyone looking for a quiet break, or who like to stay around the hotels, but the resort was a bit too quiet for us."

My wife and I have stayed at the Cala...

"My wife and I have stayed at the Cala Nova now three times a year, for the past four years. Needless to say if we did not rate it as excellent, we would not keep going back! The rooms are cleaned spotless, the staff are very helpful and friendly.

The location is just about right, close enough to the centre to stroll, yet just far enough to be away from the noise of it. Air conditioning in the rooms would be an advantage in the really hot months, this is the only reason I have rated it 9 not 10.

Well our ninth year staying here,...

"Well our ninth year staying here, some people say we are sad but we love it. We have taken our two boys here since they were one and two and they don’t want to go anywhere else either!!

The apartments are always spotless, maid service excellent along with pool side entertainment and not forgetting the fantastic bar staff. Cala Nova gives us a sunny, relaxing and safe holiday along with the rest of gorgeous Puerto Rico. The choice of restaurants are great and varied and on the whole still very reasonable. Cant wait to see the refurbed water park next year - yep we are going back again!!

This place is fantastic for everyone, young, old, families - give it a go.

Excellent apartments, we were in apts...

"Excellent apartments, we were in apts 207, the appt was spotless, the maid service was by far above and beyond the call of duty....we often had to turn them away ...... we came in one day to find them washing up our dishes, boy was I embarrassed!!!! they were fantastic and very friendly. The hotel staff were friendly and efficient.

The entertainment sounded good but we mostly went out at night and didn't see too much of it. Elvis sounded good though :)....I only found this site as I'm on my computer trying to book up the Cala Nova again for next November.

My husband and I stopped at the Cala...

"My husband and I stopped at the Cala Nova for 2 weeks and we had a fantastic time. The staff are brilliant and hotel very clean. The maid service excellent, food delicious, entertainment staff outstanding. Enjoyable for all ages, we are a young couple with no children and we absolutely loved it.

The beeches were lovely especially the Amadores beech. Plenty of things to do such as excursions. We went to the Siox City which was provided by the tour reps, dolphin watching, the market at Puerto de Mogan.

Would definitely go again

Staying at the Cala Nova in Puerto...

"Staying at the Cala Nova in Puerto Rico you cannot go wrong . The whole place is brilliant for all ages, young couples, families with young or elder children .

We went with our father and are all in our late teens and enjoyed all the entertainment as it did not finish too early or too late. The staff were very friendly and the apartment was spotless.

I would definitely go back again with my partner, it was excellent.

My wife and I have just returned from...

"My wife and I have just returned from a week’s holiday. It is our first time in Gran Canaria. We found the holiday and accommodation to be exactly as described in the information brochures and on the website.

Puerto Rico is a lively resort with excellent facilities, two harbours, two shopping centres and plenty to do, for the young and not so young too. A legion of superb restaurants offering excellent Canarian, British and International cuisine at very reasonable prices will ensure you never go hungry. Gran Canaria may be a little too much for elderly or infirm holidaymakers due to the steepness of the gradients on the walks to and from most accommodation. All this gradient has a positive side though; the views are magnificent - across the gorge and down to the harbours and beach.

Cala Nova was clean and well served by an excellent maid service, a well-stocked bar and snackery, a small shop and the ever-helpful Thomas Cook reps. We would definitely recommend the VIP Tour for a day’s excursion; the tour takes you to places you would otherwise miss on this fascinating and amazing island. The hotel apartments are ideally situated; close enough to all the amenities but not disturbed by all the noisy fun generated in the pubs and restaurants in the shopping centre.

We will definitely holiday Puerto Rico and stay in Cala Nova again.
