If you want a cheap and good hotel right in the heart of Cologne you are in good hands here. I had a clean room and a good breakfast. The equipment room is comfortable and the staff were always friendly. I was well placed.

  • Advice: You should see the Dom and the River Rhine where you stay adjacent to..
  • Activities: Brauereiausschank "Gaffel Haus" - a brewery bar with good food
  • Good For: City Breaks

This was possibly one of the worst...

This was possibly one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at. I had booked a double room for myself and my husband. The room we received contained a double bed squashed into what could only be described as a single room. We were only there for one night thankfully, as we were en route to another part of Germany.
The nicest part of the room was the laminate flooring. There was no air conditioning, but there was at least a kettle. The bed was pushed against a side wall on one side which is not ideal when there are two of you in the bed. However the head of the bed was under the window next to a radiator. Thoughtfully, the hotel had cut a hole in the middle of the headboard allowing you to alter the radiator temperature. We called it the rat hole as we had visions of all sorts of nasties using the hole as a shortcut. The bathroom was tiny and in order to get in and out of the shower you had to maneuver around the wash basin whilst being careful not to put your foot down the toilet bowl.
The following day was our tenth wedding anniversary and my husband had planned to present me with an eternity ring once we arrived at our final destination in Germany. However, he was so concerned with the impression of the room, he insisted on making me wear the ring that night rather than leaving it in the room or with reception. We chose to skip breakfast on the basis it too would probably be on a par with the room.
This hotel would make an excellent backpackers hostel if the price was reduced to reflect the standard of accommodation. The reason I gave this place any rating at all was due to the location which is a two minute walk from both the main station and the Dom.

I had some experience with this hotel...

Jun 2006, Mr Konst Klyagin

I had some experience with this hotel last weekend, as I came to Cologne to watch the Ukraine vs. Switzerland game. HRS only provided a possibility to book it for Sunday, but I had to stay for two, so I booked my room for Monday for the counter price of 100 EUR.
This was quite a lot for a room, which made me afraid I would become claustrophobic. It was indeed very small and hot, for it had no air conditioner. Neither had it looked like the pictures I saw on the HRS web-site. Nevertheless, I accepted the price for an additional day, just not to change the hotel during my stay. It was funny to see that the corridor in the ground-floor was combined with a Chinese restaurant. Every time I went to my room, I saw waiters and cooks there. But that was ok with me.
However what I really didn’t like about the hotel is the attitude of the staff. Once I came to the hotel at 3am with my girlfriend. She was on a business trip and her company arranged a room for her at Hilton, which within half a minute of walking from the place. That was the main reason I looked for the closest hotel.
The guy at the reception desk categorically told me the room I stayed at was for one person and that she couldn’t come in. Saying she has already visited me during the day and there had been no problem about it didn’t work. I felt myself like I was at a student dormitory somewhere in the Soviet Union, where they used to close the entrance at the midnight so that no one can enter or exit the building.
Finally we got tired of arguing and went to Hilton where no one tried to explain us how many people are allowed to stay in her room. Maybe I don’t understand something about the hotels, but I have never had such a problem before. Everywhere I could have as many visitors as I wanted to. I will definitely not book this hotel next time I go to Cologne.

Weird! A hard to find hotel, that...

Weird!
A hard to find hotel, that appears to be from some 1950's US gangster movie with its dire entrance like a New York flop house. The reception area is pure 1960 and has never been touched since, or so it seems!
The room I had was surprisingly OK, but my colleague had a different tale to tell about his.
However the bar/restaurant is an absolute gem, but this is independent of the hotel. Never mind it is pure delight and on this basis I would us the place again, but surely there has to be better than this in the city even at koelnmesse exhibition time.
