DO NOT GO IN MAY
3 / 10
May 2010, Patsy newcastle

We have just returned from this Hotel it had about 300/400 German teenagers there for sports tournaments, they were rude, noisy and very drunk all day and all night. We felt very intimidated, could not get near the Bar for a drink, they actually drunk the Bar dry of Vodka one night by ten o'clock. We had to do out during the day and drink at the Bar next door at night, had no sleep at all, as they partied all hours. We have been to Callela before and loved it, but we stayed in 4 star hotels which made all the difference and not in May. Seemingly the same thing happened last year. The management should not put teenage groups in at the same time as their other guests. We will not be returning.

this is my third time staying at this hotel me and my partner have the all inclusive service is what they dont tell you is that on your last day your card for all inclusive service one of them being free drinks at the bar all day and night expires at 12,00 noon on the day you are leaving. i have just had a massive argument that i was waiting in a que since 11.50 and wen i reached the counter i was told my card is not in use i quried it at reception and was spoken to like i was a child them telling me i would have been told when i arrived which i wasnt also telling me that it says on a sheet of paper they give you i told them to read it in front of me and it does not state that. my flight is at 10pm tonight i allready left the room at 10am and they expect me to wait all of these hours without a drink unless i wanted to pay.this is discusting service i recieved have never been spoken to like this in my life the person dealing with my query refused to give me his name all though he had a name badge his name was KUMAR this was at 12.05pm if they would have had more staff serving i would have been served before 12 anyway also WAT ARE WE PAYING ALL INCLUSIVE FOR WHEN WE CANT GET A DRINK ON THEY DAY WE LEAVE they should have told us this when we arrive therefore we would of saved money for a drink

Hotel from Hell
4 / 10

I have just returned from a 1 weeks stay at the above hotel with 3 more friends. We booked this hotel after looking at the HTop Group hotels, this is classed as a 4* but it is far from that. We arrived to find the hotel was FULL of students from Greece and Italy, approx 500 aged 16-18 years. What a nightmare, we had no sleep for a full week. The hotel Reception, Dining Room, and Domestic staff were excellent, the hotel was clean, though very basic (not one easy chair in the hotel at all!!!) BUT the security staff were useless. The students were coming in and out from midnight till at least 5am with no consideration for any other visitors staying in the hotel. There were about 20 more mature visitors(independent travellers) who were all complaining to the Manager, He said these students were his worse nightmare but they had booked in via Head Office and he could do nothing about it. There was absolutely no control over them by their own Tutors or Security(who was a man of many words(saying ring me if problem, most of the more mature visitors did but NO ACTION). There was only one large room in the hotel that served as Bar area, Lounge!!!!, Games room with pool tables, air hockey, arcade machines and the NON-Existent entertainment (Taped music) apart from 1 evening when they had a Duo on but the noise from the air hockey machine was deafening.
I could go on and on but my suggestion is DO NOT GO TO THE CALELLA PALACE Hotel and expect to get any sleep or good manners from the invading students. Paying 4* prices is a thorough waste of money and as far as HTop saying you can use any other of their hotels, forget it, most were closed and the nearest one to the Calella Palace did not accept the All Inclusive card. I feel we have been MIS-SOLD this holiday and would advise any reader to steer clear of this hotel.

I stayed in october with my two children 7 and 10yrs. The all inclusive suited us with always something we could eat. The food is a tad on the european side which i enjoyed but quite a few people complained.
The hotel was very clean and modern, two king size beds in room but extremely thin walls, therefore slightly sleep deprived!
All in all for the price of the holiday, we couldnt complain but the thing that spoiled it for me was how unpleasant some of the bar staff were. No hello, just snatched the card from you and almost threw the drink back at you!! The hotel would get better ratings if they changed a couple of their staff.
The location was great and the beach perfect for kids. We enjoyed regardless.

This is the first time we have been compelled to write a review
We took our Grand daughter aged 8for her first holiday abroad
Just got back from a 7 night stay at the calella palace thank god. This is not a 4 star hotel. We have rated it 1 star
bad bits
The food is poor/cold ,The drinks are just crapp, didnt get no sleep for 3 nights noisy neihbours
good bits
The free night out to the medieval castle cost us 45 euro for the bus. Great night out though and was worth the bus fair. The room was cleaned every day.
pool ok but cold ,was lucky with the weather.
Would we recomend it ? No Would we go again? No

We booked to stay in the 3* HTOP Planamar in Malgrat de Mar, but on arrival at 11pm we were told the hotel was oversubscribed and we were being moved to the 4* Calella Palace in Calella. The guests we spoke to in the Planamar said we'd had a lucky escape as they’d took a trip to the Calella Palace (you can go to any of the HTOP hotels in the area on the free bus for lunch or dinner each day) and it was much much nicer!
The food was lovely. Full English breakfast available every day, as well as continental breakfast of cold meats, cheese, fresh tomato and pickles and cereal, yoghurt and fresh fruit as well as tea, coffee, hot chocolate and fruit juice, though the juice was not fresh.
Lunch and dinner were nice, with soup available, salad and hot food of meat, fish, vegetables, pasta and rice each day and the evening meal always had a carvery with the chef cooking the food in front of you. The restaurant was very clean and the staff pleasant, though a little slow at taking away plates at busy times, but this is because the hotel doesn't employ enough staff - not because the staff are slow. Hotel policy stats no shorts in the dining room on an evening, though this was not policed.
The all-inclusive drinks are good. You can only get 2 drinks at a time (plus a soft drink), but as you only have 1 mouth this shouldn’t be a problem. They fill the spirits half and half, though they are only 25% proof so only half the strength of the UK – but with the double measures it makes up for it! All inclusive you can get local branded vodka, brandy, whisky, Cinzano Martini rosso, Martini dry, Tia Maria, Baileys, sangria, lager and a cocktail of the day – there’s probably more but that’s all I tried! The all-inclusive drinks start at 10am and close at midnight and the bar is open till 1am, with the nightlife just down the street to the right of the hotel this is a good starting point for those wanting to party all night. We made it to club Kawaii one night till 5am and it was still packed when we left! The pub down the road (100 yards) called the White Horse is very friendly and has all the football on as well as stuff like the X-Factor for those of you who like a taste of home from home! For those just staying in the hotel I would suggest getting as many drinks in before midnight as possible (they’re fine with this so long as you only order 2 at a time). What we did was go to the normal bar at about quarter to midnight and get 2 drinks each, then go to the smoking bar and get another 2 drinks each so we had enough to last until the bar closed at 1, then whatever was left we would drink on our balcony.
The facilities in the pool were good, there was a gym, Ping-Pong table, small bowling alley, small swimming pool and male/female sauna's/Jacuzzi’s in the basement of the hotel, as well as 2 outdoor children’s pools and 1 large adult pool outside. There was a very small children’s play area with a slide and 2 springy animals to sit on. The hotel is thankfully no-smoking, though they do have a small smoking bar to the rear of the reception desk. They don’t have much in the way of activities during the day, but you can go to other HTOP hotels if this is your thing. They have archery and rifle shooting at the HTOP Olympic which is just a short walk away. There is also a roof-top terrace where you can sunbathe (if you are over 18) with 2 Jacuzzi’s up there. It’s a great suntrap.
The rooms are cleaned daily with fresh sheets twice a week and clean towels daily. The hotel is in a nice location, just a short 5 minute walk from the beach. Beware at the beach with young children however as the water is over your head within a couple of steps into the water and the sand does resemble cat litter – not soft on your feet!
A lot of people come on these sites complaining about hotels, but at the end of the day it is a cheap holiday in a Spanish 4* hotel, which is equivalent to a 2* in the UK, so if you’re looking for an equivalent UK 4* hotel do not book this – you will need a 5* or 6* to satisfy your needs.
I went on holiday with my parents, my in-laws my husband and our 2 year old son (2 sets of babysitters came in handy!!) and we all had a wonderful holiday. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who doesn’t expect a UK 4* standard.
