Doubletree Grand Key Resort

For the price we paid, we definitely got more than the worth. Arriving, we mistakenly forgot to request hotel pickup so unfortunately cost the 3 of us a $15 ripped off cab ride. Arrving a short 2 min drive, (so close to the airport!) we were pleasantly surprised to see the beautiful decor and nicely laid out location. Though it is remote, it's quiet and peaceful. If you have never been to Key West, don't expect much here. The shuttle takes you to Smathers Beach. You will find no shortage of port-a-jons - the smell is overwhelming. Beach bums pitch tents across from the beach and we were harassed by two during the short time we were there. The water was brown right in front of the "beach club", and reminded my wife of the Ohio River. They charge 10 bucks per day to park in an uncovered lot. My husband and I stayed here from June 5-June 9 to celebrate our 13th anniversary. When we first checked in we got a room with a nice view of a port-a-potty. The room itself was nice enough, but the next day we asked to be moved to a room with afar better pool view. They moved us right away without any problems. Everyone who worked in the hotel was very friendly and very helpful, especially Sdenka who works in the restaurant. The shuttle runs every hour and is very nice...just wish it ran past 11:00. The resort was very nice,dinning,pool ,helpfull front desk, very good housekeeping. A $10.75 parking a night and a $17.35 room tax per night was not. Go to Fort Zachary Taylor park for the only clean beach.!!!!

Only stayed one night but did like the hotel. Good size rooms that were clean and comfortable. Not many rooms with views (mostly over parking lot. Have "balconies" that are about 2" wide so are useless. Rude check in clerk (didn't give us a key to mini bar which probably saved us money). Pool nicely set up and clean. Bus drivers were very friendly and made getting downtown very easy. Hotel bus leaves every hour to/from downtown/hotel until 11 p.m. (to hotel). Another goes to the beach hourly. Would stay again.

If you don't feel like reading this whole report-I will summarize it first-we will not return and don't think you should even go there! After riding in the FLA. heat I was so happy to see my hubby booked a "Double Tree" because I love cookies. We were not offered any and I was afraid to ask thinking maybe this offer stopped a few years back. I see from other reviews that it was not stopped. For a girls' weekend away at the end of April, 2004, we were extremely pleased with our lodgings. The shuttle service is nice--though a little later return shuttle in the evening would be a bonus. The staff goes out of their way and makes great suggestions for restaurants, bike rentals, etc. The pool is the nicest that we have seen in the area, though the only suggestion that I would make is that the pool deck be hosed down each day--it gets sticky from spilled drinks, etc. and looks sort of grungy. This is a great hotel. It's clean and it provides good service. The concierge can give you great tips on what to do in the island. The shuttle service in to town is quick. Perfect for the people who like to be away from the high street but close enough to jump in the shuttle and be where the action is.

We stayed here in October, 2003. We had a snafu in our plans to go to the dry tortugas to fish, and I showed up, hot, tired, and in tears. We were immediately whisked away to a special room overlooking the pool for a very special price. Which our regular reservation kicked in 3 days later for the weekend, we were not asked to vacate the spa suite we were in, just charged the rate for our "regular" room. If you want the beauty of Key West without the hoards of people that pack down town, then the Double Tree on the South A1A could be your place to stay, but preferably with your own transport as the hotel shuttle service struggled to cope with everyone who wanted to go downtown at peak times. At $180 a night for the week before Easter, I thought that was not bad and our room opened onto a terrace next to the pool side bar.
