I find it hard to believe that some people gave the Waldorf Astoria a low grading. Of course it is expensive! It's the Waldorf Astoria a brilliant back in time experience. I stayed there with my mum (83yrs) and a friend, the room was large, clean and very opulent. Bar... more

We booked a 4 night stay at the Waldorf Astoria. We arrived at the tunnel under the hotel. We were presented with a ticket for our luggage and this was taken directly to our rooms. The reception & entrance to the hotel was absolutely amazing and very grand just as we... more

We went to the Waldorf Astoria with high hopes, but we left disappointed. Being a Hilton HHonors Gold VIP member I am usually used to having my room upgraded but in this case I was actually downgraded from a king to a queen room. I know it does not really matter but I... more

Just back from 4 days at this lovely hotel. The staff are excellent and very helpful. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left the staff couldn't do enough for you. We arrived under the hotel tunnel where drop offs seem to go smoothly and we didn't need to touch our... more

My husband booked 5 days 2 New York staying in the Waldorf as a surprise for my 40th birthday.... NY itself was a fantastic experience. All the usual sights were worth seeing especially the site of 9/11 which is a must see if you go. As for the Waldorf I wouldn’t... more

Very poor quality hotel. The room was terrible, dirty small cold, the radiator was broken and it took 2 days to be fixed. It was my birthday and the concierge was not helpful at all of any ideas for my birthday treat, the hotel didn’t even acknowledge that it was my... more

it's all about the name...and nothing more!!!!!!!
Wanted to have a getaway for my partner's birthday....and boy did I want to get away...from the hotel....the room was not ready when we checked in (after waiting in a line to check in)...after lunch the room still wasnot ready...when the room was ready, I was given a different room than the one I booked...a downgraded room eventhough I booked on the Hilton webpage with a non-refundable rate.....waited another 45 minutes to get another room which still wasn't the room I booked....was given supposedly an upgraded room which had black mold under the soap dish and peeling wallpaper......the first morning, it took 4 phone calls and 45 minutes to get a paper delivered which was suppose to be delivered according to my upgraded room....the health/fitness center was a hub of germs since there was no equipment to wipe down any of the machines....when I inquired about this I was told that staff regularly wipes the machines down....I was in the center for an hour and never observed anyone wiping the machines down...by coincidence, I was sick the next week with the flu.....and I'm sure soneone caught my germs from my machine....the next morning...no newspaper but a little self help fixed that problem....never will return to the hotel.....
A granddaughter's dream
My husband and I took our 10 year old granddaughter to New York to see the Nutcracker Ballet. I chose the Waldorf because of it's history and reputation. We were not disappointed. Our room was not palatial but for the price we had plenty of room. The small dressing room served as her own bedroom. It was convenient and the service was as I expected from the Waldorf. We would stay there again. The borrowed umbrella came in very handy - thanks for that!
Damp, musty and overpriced
Horribly rude and disinterested staff, inattentive management, and vastly overpriced for the product received. Would not stay there again even if they invited me for free.
Our 2nd Honeymoon!
My husband and I were very impressed with the Waldorf Astoria. When making the reservations I told the hotel that my husband and I recently got married and I was planning a trip to NYC for his bday. He insisted on noting that we were a honeymoon couple and that we would get a complimentary cocktail at check in. Needless to say we were treated superbly. We had a wonderful corner room overlooking Park Avenue (we only paid $159/night). The room was nicely decorated, very clean, and had all the amenities! We felt like we were VIPs. We loved the location as well, very convenient to Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and subway stations. We would definitely stay here again!!
Good, but slightly disappointed
I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria for 6 nights in November 2003 and despite it being a lovely, clean, elegant hotel i do think it is overpriced. IT was an early Christmas Present for my mum and having stayed in cheaper hotels across America, as well as coparably priced ones i found the Waldorf was maybe living on its reputation. The Oscar's breakfast/ lunch restaurant was great but everything is slightly tainted by it being pricey. The rooms were clean with good amenities but, again, small for the price. Having stayed in similarly priced hotels inLA i would say they are better value but the Waldorf is a hotel for the "old Money" in New York so maybe its good enough for them!
Perfect...
We've just arrived home after 4 days in NYC celebrating the New Year. The Waldorf managed to exceed our expectations even when we found ourselves in room 764 which is right under the loudest ac vents in the world making sleep impossible! A discreet visit to the Front Desk and we were promptly moved to the 16th floor with a view of the Chrysler Building without any quibbling at all. You really can't fault the opulent surroundings that hark back to New York's golden age and it was a joy to retire to our rooms after hard days of sightseeing and retail therapy. The Bull & Bear restaurant is definitely worth a visit as the steak was superb and the atmosphere wonderfully indulgent. The Waldorf Astoria has managed to become one of the few hotels I've stayed in that I would definitely return to. It surpasses everywhere else I've stayed in the City (and I've visited 5 times). And I must give a mention to The Comfort Diner on E45th Street between 2nd and 3rd Aves for the best breakfast I've ever had!
Lovely Little Room
My husband and I stayed four nights at the Waldorf in May 2003. Our room was booked through Expedia. We got a great rate, so we were in the "cheaper" section of the hotel. Nevertheless, our room was lovely. Although on the smallish side, I attributed that to being a typical New York thing. The bed was wonderfully soft. The staff was pleasant and very helpful. Room service was prompt and our order beautifully presented. We arrived a few hours before check-in, but had no problem getting our room right away. The lobby was beautiful. I enjoyed walking through it each time we left and returned to the hotel. The location was very good. Be cautioned to give yourself extra time to get a cab for dinner or other evening reservations. Waldorf staff, perhaps a doorman, flags cabs for the guests, but the line of people waiting may be long and many of the cabs are already full. After waiting over a half an hour, we ended up forgoing the cab and sharing a limousine with another couple who had reservations at the same restaurant. Overall, I enjoyed the Waldorf experience and would stay there again.
not what its built up to be
The service at the hotel was extremely lacking. we have stayed at world class hotels in the past so we have had some experience with class and this did not meant expectations at all. The staff was ALWAYS unavailable and we stood in line for the concierge for thirty minutes or more each time we wanted help. We had problems with our room, the toilet got clogged and the heater sounded like a jet plane taking off. We requested the items be repaired to no avail. We shall never return to the Waldorf!!i
Living on its past reputation
I should start by saying that I am a Hilton Gold VIP member and only booked this hotel because of the improved service indicated by their literature. The checkin staff were rude and unhelpful and after an eight hour flight you expect some warmth in the welcome but this was sadly lacking. After advising me that the hotel was full (it claims to be the biggest n NYC, co make up your own mind as to the honesty of their statement) I was shown to a pokey, dark little room where the light switch was broken and had a view of an air conditioning unit! In addition, it smelled of mildrew and clearly is not often used. I was moved to a adequate room after complaining, but the overall service was very poor. I rang Reception four times to arrange a late checkout: the staff are not interested in any way in the guests and I will never stay in this hotel again. I have complained to Hilton but do not expect a response. Their frequent stay scheme is a joke and I have already switched to Starwood!
A Class Act
Although there are a lot of great hotels in New York such as the Four Seasons and The ritz(not the plaza- thats a dump), I wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else other than the Waldorf. I have stayed there several times, all before Christmas and every time I go it feels like i have never been away - although its huge and very grand, it still manages to feel homely. The staff are friendly but profesional and will sort out any request quickly. The deluxe rooms which are the standard can be on the small side and all of the bathrooms, even in the suites are very small although luxurious. The rooms are decorated to a high standard and offer super soft beds. It is usualy worth paying extra for a room on the Consierge floor as the lounge offers free drinks most of the days, continental breakfast and evening snacks. Considering how expensive to eat out in New York, this represents good value. You also get a nicer room on a high floor. People who knock this hotel are odviously staying in the worst rooms on the lowest floors which are for cheap tourests - Hilton guest Rooms - Avoid! If you want a classy hotel with a wow factor, treat yourself to the Waldorf.
