La Mariposa Hotel

First off let me tell you about myself and my wife. I always wonder about the people who write these reviews and whether I even have anything in common with them. I'm 42 years old and my wife is 39. We have two children, ages 8 and 4, and we live in La Costa, California. Our children stayed home on this trip because my wife and I were celebrating her upcoming 40th birthday. We just got home today from a fabulous stay at La Mariposa and just so that we were not too disappointed about leaving, we booked the penthouse for December. Food was delicious, service was good, staff was friendly as well as the guests. We loved the two-person jacuzzi on our balcony especially in the evenings. The views & grounds are beautiful.

Message: My stay at the La Mariposa Hotel was my greatest disappointment of my trip. I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. Positives: 1) The view of the beach is spectacular. 2) I saw a few iguanas on the premises 3) The grounds on the premises are very pretty with tropical trees and plants. I felt compelled to write this review after reading some of the absolutely horrible comments made by some of the other travelers. In fact, to be honest, I saw those reviews after I had made my reservation, but before I left, and I have to admit I came very close to cancelling. The only thing that kept me from doing so was a very restrictive cancellation policy (which is about the only thing I would criticize this hotel for). I can report back that I'm glad I went. Just returned from a CR trip that included a 3-night stay at La Mariposa. Overall, the hotel and restaurant staff were all friendly and very helpful. We ate one lunch and one dinner there and both were quite good. The view, of course, was amazing. The grounds of the hotel are gorgeous and well kept. The only negative we experienced was the room. It was clean, but was in need of an overhaul, particularly the bathroom. It had kind of a musty smell and some tiles were missing. My family stayed at the Mariposa for two nights and had a hard time leaving. The views and the gardens at the hotels were spectacular. Our room was large enough for a family of four and had a wonderful balcony overlooking the Pacific. The hotel is small and elegant. I would rate it as one of the top hotels I have ever stayed at and hope to return again soon.

We stayed in this hotel in October 2004. The hotel had very nice views but that was it... it was decent but nothing espectacular about it.. I would recommend staying at another hotel. Try the "Si Como No" hotel that is very close to this place..

This was one of the nicest views I have ever seen. From the infinity pool/bar we watched the sunset and it was amazing. The service at that bar was excellent. Sabo? the bartender was great and so was the rest of the staff there. The staff was nice to us and we had only a few problems. However, we never ate there for lunch or dinner, just poolside snacks. We checked into the hotel for the second leg of our honeymoon and were very disappointed with our room. It had a great view, but it was in the old part of the hotel, did not have a refrigerator or a safe and was right above the bar and pool. We complained and asked for a room in the newer part of the hotel with a refrigerator and a safe. Majority of the staff who worked there were extremely rude, unorganized and unfriendly. It was shocking how rude they where, especially coming from hotels in Arenal and Monteverde (Tabacon and Hotel Belmar). The staff at the other hotels were extremely helpful and courteous. At one point, coming back from dinner, I asked for my key to my room and the staff member from the front desk said that he did not have it and accused me of losing the key and asking for a copy.
