The accommodation was very basic. The hotel is actually 4 stars but the rooms were 1 star at best.
We had to change rooms because the room we were allocated was on the ground floor and was extremely humid and smelly. There are about 15 blocks as the hotel is on a very steep hill.
The restaurant, bar, pool, beach and disco are all at the bottom of the hill by block 15, so if you are unfortunate enough (as we were) to be placed in block 1, then you have a rather long and tiring walk to get to the bottom. Luckily, transportation is provided every 10 minutes to take you where you need to go.
The food was lovely. Each night is different, i.e. Mexican, Costa Rican, Gala, Spanish, Italian etc. It is buffet but very good. There is even an Italian and Tex Mex restaurant that can be booked for no extra charge.
All the staff are very friendly and helpful.
The pool was great and cleaned regularly. There is a bar in the pool! The beach is nearby, but it has black sand. A white sand beach is available at no extra cost and is a short boat ride away.
Be aware that unlike with other holidays, in this resort, there is nothing to explore.
There is absolutely nothing outside the hotel but rainforest and roads. Trips are available, but they are not cheap - for instance, £100 per person for 1 day at the Arenal Volcano.
Also, the flight is 11.5 hours!
