The holiday itself scored 11/10!!! What a fantastic city, and fortunately with so much to see and do we didn,t let our very poor quality holtel spoil it for us. We (party of seven) stayed at the Pennsylvania on 7th Ave opposite Maddison Square Garden, next door to Macy's... more

I stayed in the Hotel Pennsylvania in March this year and am disappointed in the other bad reviews on here. On arrival we were immediately booked in and upgraded free of charge to superior rooms. My room had a HUGE queen-size bed and a perect view of the Empire State... more

I usually don't book 4 or 5 star hotels as your hotel room is just a base for sightseeing in places like NY and I don't care if the place is dated or minimal in its facilities BUT I don't think it is unreasonable for a hotel in the heart of New York of all places to be... more

Before you book into this hotel you have to ask yourself this. If you like luxury, great service and a clean floor than this is not the place for you! If like us you wanted a bed for the night and somewhere to store all the tat you end up buying then take at look at this... more

We stayed at this hotel for five nights in November 2007. It was very disappointing, having awaited our holiday for eight months to travel to the States and see New York. On arriving at the hotel, we were impressed by the grandeur of the lobby and the general atmosphere.... more

My boyfriend and I booked five nights at the above hotel, and were expecting a decent level of accommodation. However, the room we checked in to was absolutely filthy and had mould on one of the ceiling tiles. We requested another room, which was slightly better, but... more

Was busy all the time, as New York is meant to be! Hotel was basic and fine and was in the heart of Manhattan. Penn Station only 5 mins away to see the rest of New York. Great hotel if you are only going to sleep in it and sight see. Definitely a budget hotel and is good... more

I have given this hotel 3 out of ten. It is situated in a fantastic location and is very cheap, however the standards inside reflect this. On arrival the computer systems had gone down so we had to queue for 2 hours in reception before being able to check in. They did... more

We booked this hotel as we wanted a reasonably priced decent hotel in New York. We booked it through Expedia and managed to get some decent room rates. Upon arrival at the hotel we walked into a bustling lobby, was my typical idea of a New York Hotel-was greeted by a... more

Help me get out of here!!!!!
Are you brave? Are you foolish? Want to make all your nightmares come true? Well then.........stay at the place where you can hear the screaming all the way out on the street - yes folks.......welcome to..........The Hotel Pennnnsylvania. Certainly they must mean Hotel Transylvannia. No...even Dracula wouldn't stay here. If your budget concious, do yourself a favour - get a sleeping bag and sleep in the park instead of here - you'll thank me. This isn't a hotel. It's hell........living hell.
I've stayed in much, much worse!!
Stayed here in March with my mum. Ok, so i couldn't afford a top-dollar hotel, but i've stated in the Habitat, and figured it was closer to shopping, and the rooms couldn't be any smaller. Was pleasently suprised! The room was huge (although it wasn't a renovated one), and the bathroom did as it said. Ok, so there was a bit of flaky paint, but it WAS ensuite, and cheap, in fact cheaper than the Habitat (tiny rooms, not ensuite, and cockroaches), and i didn't have to trapse down the hall in the middle of the night to pee. For a basic, budget hotel, you can't go wrong, espically as you go to NY to see things, not just the inside of a hotel room.
Good for the price!
I visited New York in August 2002 and we had reserved five nights in this hotel. The lobby looked great (just like the pics online when booking) as did the exterior. When we got to our room, on the eighth floor, we were put off a bit by the hallways that resembled the set of The Shining. We knew what we were getting ourselves into when we booked the hotel - cheapest possible hotel with good facilities and a good location. Hence the small, very basic room. All we wanted was a bed, shower-room, TV and air conditioning. That's what we got - so, no complaints! (P.S. the bed was so comfy - almost didn't want to leave in the mornings!)Also, the location of the hotel was perfect. One block from the ESB, and Times Square about ten minutes away. Fantastic! The restaurants that were in the lobby were very expensive, and you could get the same food just outside for half the price.I appreciate why people are writing negative comments about this hotel, but if you want a good night's sleep before stepping out into a great location the next day, then I would highly recommend it.Jonny

An absolutely shocking hotel from start to finish. Cockroaches in th cupboards, smelly dirty and staff who are rude and obviously used to complaints.
Basic but Convenient !
Visited Hotel in March 2003. Initially impressed by the Lobby, We were mildly disappointed when we saw our room on the 7th Floor. Our Room overlooked Madison Square Garden and was very basic, and clean. It was quite noisy, with all the Taxi's honking their horns at all times of the day & night. The location of the Hotel was superb, right in the middle of all the action, and couldn't be faulted. One word of warning, try to only use the phone in your Room in emergency's. The Hotel rates are extortinate !. All in all, would stay there again because of the great location. You get what you pay for though !.
Great Value
This was my 3rd visit to the Hotel Penn. I stayed here the first time, because I like old building and history and this place has it. Old lobby in terrazzo, Bass elevator doors and every room even has a "servidor". I usually have to see 1 or 2 rooms before I accept the one I like. The last visitin March was great. Nice view of the Empire state building from the 16th Floor. Room was clean, Very comfortable bed ( i like em soft) and the shower / Tub was great! Powerful shower and the tub was filled quickly. Sure there are some rough spots (outdate furniture, shade that broke etc)..but the room was only $109.00 per night! Impossible to find in NYC. You can get a budget place on the west side, but the rooms are tiny! Take it from me..I am picky and cheap..so this place was great!
not as BAD as other posts.
I stayed at this hotel a couple of months ago. And for its price and location you can't beat it!It's an old hotel lets face it, the bathroom did leak a little, however the water was nice and hot, also it was clear water (i've read about others having wierd colored water) Room did have a nice view of a brick wall. However, its situated right across from Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, and the 34th St. Subway station is just around the corner, so is the Empire State Building. Beds are nice and comfortable and I slept fine. You don't go to New York City to stay in a hotel room!!
The Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth About This Hotel.
We stayed here in august 2003 for three nights as a family of five. Myself and four children aged 21, 19, 13 and 12. Hotel lobby very large and impressive. Kids impressed so far! Rooms on 17th floor. Intially disappointed when emerging from lift corridor looked dated carpets, wallpaper etc. However rooms although dated were large. Our room was very quiet and had the most stunning uninterrupted view of the empire state building. My two oldest sons were in a room with the largest ornate bed i have ever seen! They had to share but it was not a problem as you could have probably slept us all in it! They overlooked side view of Macys, again quiet. Did not eat in hotel used local delis and saborros. Our floor was being refurbished whilst we were there. The rooms we passed looked good though smaller than ours. Our rooms were basic but had plenty of storage and were clean, beds comfy, bathrooms old but then who spends their holiday in the bathroom! Would use this hotel again but ask for specific rooms i.e 16/17th floors with views of e/s building. Have also stayed in the metropolitian/lexington ave. Again nice hotel, rooms small but we found it very, very noisy.
I don't think so!
It's looks great from the street and the lobby area looks fine and teeming with tourists. However do not be fooled by the enticing exterior as the true character of this hotel will hit you right between the eyes, once you get to your room. It's a 1,000 + bed hotel but the owners have probably only spent $1,000 over the past 10 years on the rooms, which are in DESPERATE NEED OF RENOVATION. Our room wasn't dirty but the room itself was falling apart. We noticed on the last day that there was no headboard on the bed. The shower worked and so did the toilet but the tiles had seen far better days. I don't know how the management get away with the picture of the rooms it presents on numereous travel websites because ours certainly did not look like it. It's great location but honestly it's a bit like a flop house, I half expected you to rent a room by the hour. I hope to be in new York in July and I definately will be staying elsewhere. A hotel like this would not stay open long in the UK, with such bad rooms. my advice is for people to pay the extra and stay somewhere else. Probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and I have travelled the globe for the past 25 years. Finally I have heard from a travel agent today (25.2.03) that the hotel has been closed by the health inspectors.

Having recently had surgery the Pennsylvania Hotel was not a good place to stay. The first two rooms offered were toilet's. Our New Year in New York Times Square however was BRILLIANT. Had we been in England we would have gone back home rather than put up with this hotel. It does seem amazing that despite all these complaint's both via email and face to face at their reception travel agent's still keep sending us unwiting folks time and again?
