Metropolitan Hotel Reviews

Booked a room with two double beds. Room was spacious, had everything we needed in it, very clean. Hotel was just as it looked on the website. Bathroom was small and had no extractor fan so ceiling was a little stained. That was the only fault I could find. The location... more

Great Location! Perfect for Budget-Savy Travelers!
Don't be afraid to stay at the Metropolitan. It is an affordable place to stay right in the middle of Manhattan. It's one block from the Metro and is well worth the price (we paid about $85/night). Our room was small, but probably larger than some of the studio apartments that are being bought for $355,000 by New Yorkers. The bed was plenty big enough for two adults of average weight and height. We even had eight pillows in the bed with us for maximum comfort and slept great. The room was quiet except for an occassional siren from the hospital underneath us, but this was only when we had the window cracked open to hear the sounds of traffic. What do you expect when you're in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world? The Metropolitan isn't high brow, it's just a good hotel in a fantastic part of town. We will be returning as soon as we can! Hopefully in the Spring or Summer when the wind chill isn't burning our faces off. Recommended highly!
Don't bother with this place
We had high hopes for this hotel, unfortunately we were disappointed. The size of the room was great, pity the bed was smaller than a standard double. The bathroom was grim - broken tiles, rusty sink, feeble shower, lack of towels. The service was equally poor - the bottle of wine we were served in the restaurant was different to the one we ordered. The waiters response was 'it's all I got'! Another reason NOT to stay at this place is that it is located above a fire station & police precinct so if you are not kept awake by the inconsistent heating, the sirens will get you.
Do not stay here
What a major disappointment. The location is good, but we walked into our room and let out a sigh of "Oh nooooo..." The carpets were deeply stained, the thermostat was broken, the bathroom had mold in the tiles, and the bed was very old and lumpy. We were in line to speak with the manager the next morning - the person in front of us had similar complaints. This hotel is in need of MAJOR renovation. The advertisements and website are EXTREMELY misleading. I am still very upset about the amount of money we paid for what was advertised as a "First Class" hotel. Do not fall for this!
Just what I needed
We went here in the middle of a snow storm on 12/14/03. Arrived at noon, and was checked in right away. The room was very nice. Only thing missing was an alarm clock - but hey, this is a mini vk - who needs that! We went to Oxford for breakfast - gotta love Willy. Yes, breakfast might have served on throw away - but this is a take away deli! Quick, fast service. Hot food. We had dinner next door to the restuarant - the BEST lobster I have ever had! Room was clean, bathroom, marble. Nice added addition of a fridge to put your things in. I would go back in a minute. Rockfeller center only a 10 minute walk away, as was 5th avenue. A little further walk was central park. Very nice place. Simple. If you are looking for someone to go after every whim, Waldorf is up the street. For simple folks, who can take care of themselves, this is the place!
Not what you would expect.....disappointing
Like other critics here, I have to say that on first impressions of the lobby, I was really pleased and thought myself and my husband were in store for a bit of luxury. When we arrived at the room, we were saddened to see the quality of the room. Again, the carpets were really threadbare and there was inadequate bedding (only two sheets - literally!) The heating came and off at will (more off than on). In this holiday season, just before Christmas, NY can be pretty chilly!! Avoid the restaurant down stairs, it's very expensive and the quality of food leaves a lot to be desired! The location however is great as its so central. I would never recommend this place to anyone I cared about! I ended up with flu due to the inconsistent heating! When the heating was off, it felt damp in the room!
Highly UN-recommended
So, a number of friends and colleagues descended to New York just before Christmas and had the misfortune to book ourselves, en masse, into this hotel. Things started poorly, when the concierge managed to not completely empty one of the taxis of our party, thus losing a bottle of whiskey (not too important) and a passport (quite important). For this reviewer, the hotel had a shower without any water pressure - for my colleagues, they had (variously) no hot water, no heating at all, or a small uncomfortable bed. Rooms are hugely variable - paying the same, I had a tiny room whereas colleagues had a huge suite with sofa; the staff are poor and couldn't be bothered to help us with taxis or any help other than the basic. This is not a cheap hotel, but highly cheap service: avoid, avoid, avoid.
Location, Location, Loction
The Metropolitan Hotel is an excellent choice for first time or return visitors to the Big Apple. It is in a great location, centrally located in Manhattan, close to Central Park, Park Ave., China Town and the subway system. We have made two trips to New York and stayed at the Metropolitan both times. While the restaurant is a bit pricey and limited the hotel is close to a good number of restaurants that offer excellent food choices and service. The rooms are not fancy but they are very nice and offer the normal ammenities. The staff is a plus, friendly, courteous and helpful. There is a great little coffe shop right next door with outdoor seating which offers a birds eye view of the hustle and bustle of New York. We plan to return to New York during 2004 and our first choice for accomodations will be the Metropolitan.
Phew, better than I expected!!
Booked the hotel based on the great price for centrally located 3/4 star hotel, and then I read the reviews and worried all the way there! But although it is definately only a 2 star hotel (British Standards) it was fine for 3 nights. Was confusion over the room we'd booked to start with but on standing my ground they soon sorted it out. Room was on the 3rd floor, decor a bit drab and furnishings a bit worn but everything was clean, especially the bathroom which is paramount to me, the room was quite large by NY standards the bed and pillows very comfortable. We overlooked a very busy intersection at the front of the hotel which was worrying but the double glazing did a great job, and it was fascinating to watch the comings and goings whenever we were in the room! And yes we did hear the fire engines from the local station but hey it is part of city life and only happened every so often. Used the lobby bar which was fine but didnt eat there so can't comment - we tried the Oxford for breakfast where the staff were tremendous, the food ok, and Raffles where the staff were ok but the food better! Both on Lexington Avenue. All in all a great weekend break in a great city - the hotel was in a wonderful position for most of the major sights, and was value for money - but a 3/4 star it wasn't - have a feeling its a bit of a lottery what standard of room you get, so would probably think twice about booking it again- we struck lucky this time!
We enjoyed it, Dispite the SNOW.
Great location, Clean room although a little cold ( but it was -7 outside). Wasn't prepared for all the snow, but it did clear up and we had 3 full days to shop and sightsee. If you are doing the Empire State go at 8.30am, we only waitied 45 mins.(during the day it was 3 hours) Wasn't that keen on the Oxford that everyone was raving on about. ( They don't even serve your food on real plates it's all plastic.) Go to the Broadway Diner for breakfast the tea is nice and the service out of this world.( on lex and 53rd)
Not clean, not working, bad service---Great location
My boyfriend and I stayed here in December during the holiday season--paying way too much for what we got. The bathroom was not clean: we found a used bar of soap in the shower, a messy sink, the heater unplugged, the small refrigerator stored near the toilet, holes in the walls, and dirty carpeting. Managers were not too sympathetic of the situtation either. Yeah, the location is great, and it could be a decent hotel, but spend your $$ elsewhere! It's not worth it.
