We went to New York last year for my birthday, we had an amazing time, the only thing I would do differently would be to go later on in the year, January is far too cold there, you can only be outside for literally a few minutes before you are freezing.
We stayed in the Le Parker Meridian, next to Carnegie hall, it was a treat so was quite expensive, we had to complain about the room as it was supposed to be a room with a view but the view looked out onto the building wall next door.
It has an indoor pool on the roof with amazing views over New York. The hotel itself was beautiful, a bit on the pricy side though, the breakfast was very expensive so gave that a miss and ate in a diner round the corner which was far better value.
There was lots to do and sea nearby and getting around was actually fairly cheap if you took a taxi.
All in all we had a great time, but i would say that you do need to take a good bit of spending money with you as New York is VERY expensive.
