No life of luxury
from A TripAdvisor Member
Cheap -- but don't go expecting anything fancy. No towels. Bathroom sink stopped up for many hours and finally had to brush teeth and spit into toilet. Ewwww. The nearby exclusive club is loud, but couldn't hear it from third floor. Whoever sponge painted the room's ceiling should be shot -- looked like a 5-year-old's work.
What a disappointment
from A TripAdvisor Member
What a disappointment this hotel truly was!!!! I would never go back there. Everything that was promised didn't exist. No tea making facilities, no iron, no trouser press, non smoking room-when I paid for a smoking room. The lift/elevator was so slow and the website is very misleading. The bell boys and maids were the nicest people I met, but the managerial staff were no help at all! The noise from the "exclusive" club kept me awake and the bathroom was built for tiny people-the bath must have been only for children and there was...

Eclectic, inexpensive. We loved it.

I visit Manhattan 2-3 times per year for business and/or pleasure. The least expensive place I've stayed is the Gershwin and the most expensive have been the Waldorf=Astoria, Marriott Times Square and Marriott Renaissance. Although they've all been nice hotels in their own way, I really, truly like the Gershwin and just booked my room to stay there a second time this year. I found the rooms adorable and home-like with their hardwood floors and bay windows. The art collection is very interesting and I encourage guests to visit other...

Whats your problem!!
from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I chose New York to spend our silver wedding anniversary. We had never been to the States before. The trip was a short notice job. You can imagine our dismay when we read some of the comments on this site about the Gershwin, we felt like cancelling and trying for somewhere else but we didnt and went ahead. So, were all the negative reviews a true reflection of the hotel? A resounding NO is the answer. The check in was rapid, no hounding us for tips...the room was nice, everything worked and it was clean and comfortable. The tv,...

Hip & Happening
from Budger_roo
Trendy, Hip hotel with small, but nice clean rooms. The water took a long time to warm up, so turn on the water 5 mins. before you get in. The staff was very laid back, and it was a very cool place to be. The bar is beautiful, there was even a Christian Dior event in the bar on Saturday evening when I stayed. I love this place, I will come back. Great value, location, and lots of fun. The hotel was very international - guests and staff. It's not the Four Seasons, but it is very bohemian, which I like better.
Great value, don't expect the Four Seasons

My fiance and I stayed here Sept 2 and 3...got in around midnight on the 2nd and thought the old-style elevator was really neat, as were the crazy art pieces in the hallways and the VERY strange music coming from the bar downstairs (the elevator guy agreed it was strange too). The room was actually larger than I expected (I booked an 'economy room')--double bed, dresser, chair, nightstand, closet and small bathroom, with room for our suitcases. I honestly expected a closet, considering it's NYC after all. Clean and a small window air...

Very Cool Place
from A TripAdvisor Member
Before I went to The Gershwin I read the reviews here. Some were bad, some were good as I'm sure you are finding out. I stayed there for a week in late August '04. The prices are unbeatable, (so don't expect The SoHo Grand) The Gershwin is in a great location. The staff was friendly, not overly friendly but never rude or mean. They were happy to help me with all my bags, and when I forgot the code I made up for my in-room safe they sent someone up to help me immediately. The only slamming doors I heard were around 11a - 12p when the maids...

Spartan though clean
from ShelleyHig
2 night stay with my teenage son August 04... The Gershwin was described as being hip and artsy, which sounded fun but it was extremely basic and the club downstairs was very noisy. Window unit AC was old and blew cold air directly on the bed. The concierge gave us bad info on storing luggage at Grand Central Station (It can't be done) and didn't seem to care how inconvenienced we were. On the other hand, it was convenient location near the Empire State building. Would not stay there again.
Good location and value at a reasonable price

I bid on a room at the Gershwin on SkyAuction.com, and won the auction. My price for 5 nights (tax INCLUDED) was $555. I had read mixed reviews of the hotel on this site and others, but decided that I would give it a try. Yes, the hotel is old, and the elevator is small, but the rooms, hallways and lobby were clean (I didn't see any cockroaches in the hallways). The air conditioner worked fine (I was there in July), the reception staff was helpful, and the concierge was also very helpful. The location is such that if you like to...

Great Times
from sofrenchdisco
After researching endlessly for the best deal in New York I found the Gershwin. Although I was a little put off at first from the other reviews my mom and I decided to go for it. I also discovered before we left that a friend of a friend had just stayed there with his family and he said it was perfect. So we booked a superior room and headed to the Big Apple. When we got there it was excactly how we pictured it. Very cool exterior, lobby, hallways all decorated with Andy Warhol art works. Great location, close to the Flatiron,Empire State and...
