More Traveller Reviews of Ameritania Hotel
Loved it!!!! Great hotel in a fantastic location!
from Wrekin68
I read all the reviews for the Ameritania before our trip to New York. Some of them were reassuring enough but others naturally made me feel a little wary. Particularly since this was my first, long-awaited visit to New York and I wanted it to be something special. The Ameritania did not disappoint in any way during our 7 night stay. Our room was large, with two double beds, and plenty of space for two people to effectively live in for a week. The bedroom, closet and bathroom (again, plenty big enough) were spotlessly clean and the standard of the housekeeping was exceptional. On one particular day we were in and out of the room all day, finally leaving at 7pm for our evening meal, and the room was still cleaned! The decor of the rooms tends towards brown and beige, which I found relaxing, although I can see that you might find it 'dingy' if this colour scheme was not to your taste. Breakfast was more than adequate, although the "dining room" gets a little crowded at weekends. At the end of the day, it depends what you are looking for from a hotel breakfast. Bagels, juice and coffee (or herbal tea in my case) suits me more than fine. The location of the hotel is fantastic as it is literally a five minute walk (maybe less) to Times Square. Many other tourist sights are also within comfortable walking distance. Our 8th floor room overlooked Broadway and, while we could certainly hear the traffic at night, it was no more than we would expect being in this location. (I should also add that the hotel itself was exceptionally quiet at night - over 7 days/nights we heard people in the corridor maybe two or three times.) I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough and would not hesitate to stay there again. The room was great, location fantastic and the staff professional and courteous. We had a brilliant week in New York and a large part of that is due to the Ameritania. Thank you!!!
Nice Lobby shame about the room

I stayed at the Ameritania for 3 nights last November and despite the good first impressions I got from the reception and friendliness of the doorman and receptionist was disappointed with the overall experience of my stay. I arrived early and as there were no rooms ready ventured out into the city. I cam back to get what must have been the last room - on low floor facing a central void with no view or seemingly any glimpse of daylight. The decor was in need of some touching up and the common areas had some unpleasant odours. The room was too hot and the radiator sounded like ot was going to explode under the strain. Hot water was however in short supply in course of my stay, not that you would spend long in the bathroom which had antartic temperatures courtesy of a window that could not be shut properly. I chose the hotel based on premise that $150 a night should see you in a reasonable standard of accommodation even in NYC, unfortunately I was proved wrong and would not recommend the hotel to friends when comparing to other hotels I have visited on Manhattan.
Don't Be Deceived by This Hotel's Good Looks

My husband and I got a great rate on this hotel from Expedia ($119) and were thrilled with the great location and beautiful contemporary decor. But if you are used to good service, don't go to the Ameritania. Though everything looks good on the outside, we quickly found out that there were many problems and the staff was clueless. Every Coke machine in the building was broken and only one ice machine worked. Believe me, we checked every floor. Rather than put signs on the machines or in the elevators to tell you about this or where to go for ice, they let us go to every floor to figure it out for ourselves. The housekeeping staff had no idea where to get ice or drinks either. Worst of all, the morning we left, there was NO HOT WATER!! Imagine getting ready to go to the airport and not being able to take a shower!! We were very upset and complained. They said they would send up someone but never did. After an hour, a little bit of warm water came out so we got quick showers before we left. Isn't hot water one of the basic things a hotel should provide? Since we booked through Expedia and prepaid, the hotel could not give us a partial refund or discount. They offered a free upgrade next time we stay there, which was kind. But with thousands of hotel choices in NYC, I don't think we'd stay here twice especially since we had those problems. I guess you get what you pay for!
Great hotel at a great location!

We just got back form NY where we stayed for five nights at the Ameritania Hotel, which we booked through Expedia at a very good rate. I had read the reviews here and didn't quite know what to expect. Well, we had a great time there: very good location, nice helpful staff, fine room with nice bed overlooking Broadway, bagels, orange juice and coffee for breakfast. I really can't image what people are complaing about. Small room? What do you expect in a big city at this price and besides, you don't throw a party for all your friends in your hotel room do you? Noisy? You're in the middle of New York. The hallways badly lit? Are you going to read a book there???Our room was clean, neat, safe and everything worked properly. What more do you want?
brilliant time

Well, first of all let me tell you that i live in NYC... I was having repairs on my apartment and needed to be at a hotel for 7 - 10 days.... I was very excited when i found a rate of $109/nt. on hotels.com When i arrived i asked the manager if they could match the rate and he said he could do better and gave it to me for $99. My first room was absolutely NOT going to work (it was FREEZING!!!!!!!) , however, they instantly moved me to a much more spacious room where the heat was OK... I was there for an entire week and the staff was EXCELLENT !!! I really can't say enough good things about them and the way the accomodated me for the week and a half.. HOWEVER, on the morning i was checking out, i was getting dressed and moved my coat off of the chair a HUGE rat came running out from underneath and into the bathroom... right by the radiator.... mind you the night before, i was sitting on the floor next to the radiator because it was 30 below outside and fell asleep right in the same spot.... I jumped on the bed and called downstairs ! they were a little apologetic but i just kind of laughed it off.... mind you, i am a local and rats are just a way of life here.... other than that my stay was excellent and believe it or not, i would stay again... but i would ask for the TOP floor.... rats don't normally climb that high... i just got the chill bumps again... ENJOY!!

We arrived at the Ameritania with a totally open mind as solely price drove our decision to go there as we are a family of 6 and needed 3 rooms........First impressions were good - Broadway location, welcoming doorman, clean modern, nicely designed foyer. However the rooms initially strike you as a bit small and dingey and we had to shuffle them around because one of them had been smoked in - but the staff were accommodative and once you are in you soon acclimatise. They were clean, the beds hard but comfortable and everything worked, though the Art Deco radiator was a bit noisy. Breakfast is basic, just bagels, coffee or tea and juice but I really enjoyed sitting in the rather dilapidated old bar area, watching the world go by on Broadway. In summary, the Plaza it isn't but you are not paying Plaza prices. If you are in town for just 4 or 5 days, looking for somewhere clean and centrally placed just to put your head down at night, the Ameritania is absolutely fine.
Not too bad

Stayed here for two nights when we fled our apartment in Greenwich Village. 4 of us sharing 2 double beds in one room, the room was very small!! The heater did'nt work propertly and made noises througout the night. We did get extra blankets though when we asked. However the coffee, oj and bagels were good and for the price, it was'nt too bad. Just get rid of the annoying barman though!
Ok hotel, brilliant location.

We went to New York for our first time at the end of January 2004. After reading reviews about the hotel on here, we were a little worried. We found the hotel was in an ideal location and staff really friendly. New York was in the grip of a bad wintry week when we got there and on waking up on the first morning I did find the heating had not been adequatly working overnight so was frozen. This was soon rectified on the following night and room service did provide us with blankets as the bedding was a bit thin and not really good for the winter season. The rooms are small, but they always are in major cities, even in some big hotels. Ask for a room at the back of hotel as it is quieter and for more space a corner room. A good tip is to ask the doorman to organize you a sedan car to go back to the airport was only $49 which when it costs you about $$5 in a taxi from the airport once you've added on tips works out a bargain. As this rate on the sedan includes tips and tolls etc. The bagels were great in the morning although I'd get up early if you want a choice on type of bagel. The hotel is right around the corner from the Ed Sullivan theatre where the David Letterman Show is done and also round the corner from Broadway Theatre, where Bombay Dreams is and near the theatre where Mamma Mia is.Good tip - Go to the NYC tourist office on 7th Ave - 1 block across from hotel, they have loads of discount vouchers off allsorts. The deli/store across road from hotel is great for any food and drink supplies also. Cherry Pepsi and Diet Coke with Lime are bliss! Good food at Applebee's on Broadway and Roxy's Deli has amazing cheesecakes and friendly staff
Great location for Macy's Thanksgiving Parade
from olseneil
I had read reviews for the Ameritania and most were not very positive, so I was not expecting much. My wife and I went primarily to see the Thanksgiving Day Macy's Parade (26-30 Nov 2003) and the location is perfect for that event--right on Broadway. Our room was small but adequate. The linen/room service was not good, but everything else was okay. Although the restaurant was not functioning, there was a bar, and the morning coffee and bagels were a good deal. Go next door on 54th to the Iguana Cuban restaurant for meals and drinks. Of course, the hotel was swamped for the Macy's parade, but considering that, it provided the location we needed. It is convenient to downtown Manhattan. If you just need a place to stay, it does work.

The hotel is in a great position, BUT, it really needs some tlc. Hot water and heating was a problem during our stay and the staff did not really seem to care. The free coffee was great and the door staff could not be any more helpfull. Central park, Broadway and 5th ave... more
