Excelsior Hotel

Our experience was the same as the review of this hotel that I have just read here. The desk and service staff were unhelpful and misserable to deal with. The telephone in the room was broken. We asked to have it replaced. We had to call twice to the desk. A person finally knocked on the door much later when we were in the bathroom. We asked him to return in one-half hour. We are regular visitors to New York as we have Children And Grand children living on the Upper West Side. We normally stay mid town but on this occasion since there was a family celebration we decided to stay on the Upper West Side so as to be near to the family. My mom and I visited NYC for a Lincoln Center concert in late September. An Upper West Side location was preferable, but I was highly reluctant to try The Excelsior based upon the mixed postings on this site. Booked this hotel during a high capacity week in NYC. There was nothing else available and the location is great, so I decided to give it a shot. The front desk staff is the rudest and least helpful that I have ever encountered. We booked a two-bed room for three people online through Expedia and were given a one-bed room. When I inquired about the discrepancy, I was told that since I booked (and paid in full in advance) online, I had to take whatever was available. I could not upgrade to a suite as the hotel was fully booked, and they would not provide a cot. The staff's attitude throughout my polite inquiries was what got me. I am a frequent traveler; travel to vacation spots 4-5 times per year. We stayed at The Excelsior during the Labor Day weekend 2004 and were extremely pleased with the rooms. We booked the 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom + living room (with fold out sofa bed). There were 4 of us total sharing the suite. The rooms and bathrooms were very spacious and clean. Booked the Excelsior for a 3-day business trip this week, thanks to numerous recommendations from friends, and because of its location. I will cast my vote with the positive reviews here; I had a great experience. I was greeted by friendly, smiling faces, check-in was very smooth, they upgraded my room to a junior suite (unasked, and did not even draw it to my attention or make a big deal out of it, I just discovered it when I opened the door). On my fourth trip to NYC I chose to stay at the Excelsior because of its four star rating. The hotel is in a beautiful neighborhood on the upper west side near central park where you are surrounded by upscale NY apartment buildings. The hotel has a gorgeous lobby and clean, pretty rooms. The rooms were of adequate size for three women to share. Hotel staff members were helpful and friendly. If you are seeking a clean, quiet hotel with a wonderful Central Park West location (walking distance to subway), this hotel is for you! True, no freebie coffee maker, but hotel does have breakfast room on premises (though rather expensive). A place to visit and return again...I will!

We checked in early in the evening on Thursday July 8th. Our first room smelled so strongly of paint that we immediately requested another. Our next room seemed pleasant enough. At 8am the following morning (5am to us, as we are from the West Coast), we were awoken by the pleasant sounds of a jackhammer. Strange, considering that we were on the 6th floor.
