The Berghof is a beautiful hotel, it has a very good location-walking distance of the penken gondola (Unless your very unfit,) and situated at the quieter end of the main street, so you are within reach of all the noisy bars if that’s your cup of tea. The hotel has one of the nicest bars in town anyway, and if you fancy a change of scene all the hotels nearby are fabulous and have their own cozy bars and restaurants. we stayed on a half board basis- breakfast and tea (That’s breakfast and dinner to south of England dwellers.) Breakfast is a buffet of numerous types of bread, sweet breads, pastries, hot food of various descriptions, coffee, tea- whatever you like, its there.
Our evening meal was also very good, they have a different menu for each day, from which you choose a main meal. You starter, side dishes, desserts and however many extra dishes you require are available form a fresh buffet consisting of 2/3 types of pasta with 2/3 pasta sauces, some local Austrian stuff- usually 2/3 choices of this (Ive no idea what most of this stuff was, but it was jolly good for the most part,) loads of salad and cold fish, meats and those slices of terrine they have in big ski resort hotels.
The desserts are fabulous, as many little cakes as you like, ice cream, variety of sauces, I used to send my girlfriend and my nephews to get me extra dessert so that other guests didn’t see me going to that section of the buffet several times. They have a gymnasium in the hotel-small, but very quiet and modern with good equipment. The hotel has a very relaxing spa type area with sauna, steam room, spa bath, showers, etc.
My only criticism is that they don’t tell you in the brochure that you are not allowed to wear a bathing costume in there - didn’t bother me, but my girlfriend refused point blank to have anything to do with it! I think its a bit strict, I have stayed in other hotels in Mayrhofen where the choice is yours, and also in deepest Germany where the vacationing Germans in all their stark naked, sometimes wobbly glory have not batted an eyelid at us wearing bathing costumes, so id have thought that in a resort as popular as Mayrhofen they would tolerate our prudish ways. There is a swimming pool not far away with water slides- great fun. But if you want to use their sauna you have to get your kit off as well!
The staff at the hotel were very friendy, the bar staff have been there for years, and we had the same couple of people serving us every day, they were very friendly and great with my Sisters kids.

Visited Berghof for New Year 2006. This was our 4th visit to Mayrhofen and booked again for 2007!
Staff at Berghof make you really welcome, food is first class and hotel what you would expect for a 4* in Austria.
Location is a little further away from Penken lift than you want at the end of a hard days skiing but the walk is worth it.
The spa is not for the prudish... but as they say when in Rome!
Village has great charm, loud europop if you want it or a quiet dinner if that's your preference. I've skied all over Europe and nothing is quite like Austria's apres ski.
Mayrhofen is a fantastic ski area hoping for better snow this year, downside is the crush as you try to alight the Penken, but if you get your timing right this is not so much of a problem.
If you've not tried Mayrhofen and the Berghof, give it a go you wont be disappointed.
