Great hotel location

Great hotel location and rooms. Music is everywhere-Piano Bar, Irish Pub, etc. We usually stay at the Excalibur, which we also like. Attended Celine Dion show at Caesars-Superb show! Also saw Coasters, Platters, and Drifters at the Sahara. Great show-they sang and performed, on stage ,all the old songs we enjoyed many years ago. (wife was led up on stage to sing and dance with them) Had lots of fun. We went to Texas Station, Green Valley Ranch, and the Fiesta Casinos since this was our 14th time in Vegas, we wanted to see some of the casinos off the strip. We highly recommend them especially their buffets, which are half-price when joining their slot clubs.
Maybe we were lucky, but...

After reading all the negative reviews I was worried that we were going to have an unpleasant experience at this hotel. We travelled from the east coast for just a long weekend trip, so we didn't really have time for any mishaps with the hotel. It was a holiday weekend, so I expected it to be busy, but I didn't expect the line to get a taxi from the airport to be 3 miles long ( I think we could have walked to it faster!) !! Anyway, we tried to check in at the airport and they told us that they only had smoking rooms available, and that any changes or requests for upgrades had to go through the front desk. That was the only problem we had-when we got to the hotel there was a short line to check in and the attendant changed our room with no problem. The hotel was great-I'm a sports fan and having the ESPN Zone right in our hotel was nice. We toured many of the other hotels and we really liked NY NY the best. It had everything and was in a perfect location, right in the heart of the action. We would definitely stay there again.
Vegas definitely lived up to my high expectations!

I had very high expectations when heading to Vegas last week. Didn't think it could live up to them but it did and more. We stayed at the New York New York Hotel. I had read a few bad reviews but I must say I was extremely happy with the hotel. Our room was pretty standard but you don't go to Vegas to spend your time in your room anyway. It was very clean, check in was quick and although the rollercoaster was outside our window couldn't hear it. The variety of restaurants and bars in the hotel was great. We ate mexican, asian, italian, steak, fresh pretzels, gorgeous pastrami standwiches from the deli etc. etc. Heaven. Best food I've had on holidays in ages and good value too. The location of the hotel was great too as it was right in the middle of the strip. The shopping in Vegas was out of this world. We hit all the malls, the Forum at Caesers Pallace, the Dessert Passage at the Aladdin, the Shoppes at the Venetian, the Fashion Show Mall and the Outlet Mall in Primm. As regards an enjoyable experience I suppose the Dessert Passage and the Venetian were the best just from the pure WOW factor of the surroundings and the thought that had been put into the whole place. There were great bargains to be had in the Outlet Mall (about 40 mins from Vegas - bus from MGM every couple of hours or so). Finally and most importantly as regards gambling I think that the Barbary Coast on the strip was the best. It was small and dark and there were cheap roulette tables and plenty of free drinks. Very friendly crowd at the tables also.I think that Binions Horseshoe on Freemont Street was great as well. The only roulette table I came across with no double 00 on it. Again, dark, loads of free drink and good fun.Last thing - amazing display in the Bellagio made of all types and sizes of pumpkins. You'd have to see it to believe it.
Expectations high- experience low!!!!

Our group was treated like pre-schoolers on a field trip- we checked in early together and asked for rooms on the same floor. We were put on three different floors. We only needed four rooms. We planned this trip to celebrate a birthday- it was very hard for us to get together to meet and very inconvenient. We also asked for a late check-out for just 1 of the rooms since our plane was leaving in the evening- they would not even work with us on anything. New york New york is highly overrated. The food choices are not very good- food court atmosphere!!! We would never stay there again.
Tired of the whining...

Ok, I am a frequent visitor to vegas, and there are a few things that should be pointed out for anyone visiting Las Vegas in response to some of the reviews I have read here - 1) YOU WILL ALWAYS NEED PHOTO ID TO CHECK IN! In this age of terrorist threats, this is the norm - shouldn't you always have your photo ID on you anyhow? That was an unfair crucifying of this hotel. Your check in time would have been cut down by about 2/3rd's 2) NEVER expect all of your rooms to be together if you are travelling in a large group - unless you are Michael Jackson and buy out entire floors... 3) Vegas is a tourist trap, and will nickel and dime you most everywhere - you CAN find some deals, but don't cry about the price of food and such when you are in a themed hotel - you are on vacation, you are a captive audience, and if you want cheap, there is always Subway and Denny's at casino royale...enjoy yourself! With that said...I have stayed at NYNY in the past and will be doing so again in November...is this my favorite hotel? No. is this the best deal on the strip? No, but you can get fair prices thru mailings. Is this one of the coolest and most interesting casinos around? YES!!!! Is it in a great location? YES!!!! Are the rooms you get at the lowest rates small? YES!!! but if you are looking to spend all your time in the room, go to the Venetian or get a suite or something. I can understand if you are looking for cleanliness - a dirty room IS unacceptable - but the shape of this hotel alone (Multiple towers of varying sizes) couldn't accomodate all the rooms being as big as those in Bally's, Venetian, or even the Orleans (My Fav hotel in Vegas for most $-for-$ value). NYNY is a lot of fun if you are looking for something out of the ordinary as far as hotels go. Its decorated well, has a great casino, a good (not great) pool (for great pools, go to Mandalay Bay or the Hard Rock hotel), Great restaurants, and always something to do! plus its a short walk to all the other great hotels... Can these rooms be overpriced? At times, I guess so, but you ARE paying for location, location, location... Anyhow, thats all for now... happy travelling
a difficult stay

We arrived with high hopes for New York New York. We had always passed through it and enjoyed what little time we spent there. Now that I have stayed there I will not stay again. The first day we were there my husband slipped getting into the pool and broke his ankle. One of the life guards looked up but didn't even come over to check if he was ok. We ended up going back to the room after no one took notice of him falling and hurting himself. Not to mention the very very very long walk to the elevator. Walking on a broken ankle is no fun anyway...but having to walk over 30 rooms worth of halls to get to our room was a bit silly. Also they put us on the side where the roller coaster goes by and didn't mention to us that it doesn't close down until 11:30 at night. It was so close it rattled the window each time it went by and we could hear the passenger screams rather well. Also there was a funny sulfur smell down by the pool and in some of the rooms. We heard several people complaining about it but nothing seemed to get done. On the one up side the spa and gym were wonderful. We found the staff friendly and caring and great to be around. The spa ended up being an oasis for us at the hotel. As well the new resturant ( 9 fine Irishmen) was lovely and very welcoming. All in all I was never so happy to get out of Las Vegas. I will go back but not to New York New York.
Just Tolerable

As this was a 47th Wedding anniversary and my wife's 75th Birthday trip, planned and paid for by our children - we thought we were all scheduled to be in close proximity to each others rooms. My wife and I, plus one son were in the New York Tower on opposite ends of the 6th floor, and my other son and his family were in the Crysler Tower and on the 26th floor. We could not access his tower and vice versa for us, unless some one went down to the ground floor and use their card to bring us or them to our rooms to visit - needless to say, our trip to your hotel did not provide the Happy 47th Anniversary that our children planned for us. If this hotel is supposed to represent the hotel in New York, I won't be going East to that city in the near future. The rest of the hotel was very well planned and laid out. All food places were well appointed and service was fine, But scheduling of rooms need the attention of senior management. We were guests in your hotel from August 1 thru August 4, 2003 in room 672. Very Good Experience

I was a little nervous about this hotel after reading some other negative web reviews. Well I don't know what people were talking about but the hotel was fine. There was a long line at check in but it went quickly and smoothly. We were offered a room upgrade (for a price) which we took and got a very nice, large rooming overlooking the strip. The roller coaster was outside our window but we were on the 23rd floor and the noise was similar to waves crashing on the beach. Not unpleasant at all and the coaster closed about 11pm when most people are still up anyway. It didn't start early in the morning. Rooms were clean, everything worked. Our smoking room (which we wanted) didn't smell like smoke which smoking rooms usually do. Room service was reasonably priced and the wait wasn't bad. All service people were pleasant especially two of the bartenders in the America restaurant. We don't really gamble much except the horse races in the sports book so no comments there. The pool is good sized and the drink servers were very accomodating. My husband is from New York so we got a kick out of all the New York stuff. I would recommend this hotel and would stay here again. The only thing we saw that was really impressive at another hotel/casino was the pool facilities at the Mandalay Bay. Wow!!
not bad for a large hotel
from A TripAdvisor Member
We waited in line at check in for about a half hr. Not bad. We asked for an upgrade to a jacuzzi suite. The room we were given was incredible. Very large, with a large jacuzzi tub. Couldn't have been more pleased. The run of the house rooms were very, very small. Some friends of ours stayed in one, i wouldn't have been able to stand it for four nights. I mean, just enough room for the bed, and a tiny bathroom. Unbelievable. Don't stay here if you want a standard room. The roller coaster was pretty close to our window, but never bothered us. The casino is not good, very small. Couldn't get a seat in the evening, we went elsewhere. It didn't help that they refused to honor gambling coupons we had. They said people were copying them. So what, then don't put them out there. Lame. Tip, ask them how much they are holding on your credit card. They held 400$ on ours for incidental charges. I have never heard of this. We didn't know and our card was refused at Emeril's restaraunt. Not cool. The restaraunts we ate at were good. Try the italian place. Very good and inexpensive. The bars were always packed. Members of our party said the piano bar is an absolute riot. Overall, i would say if you stay here, get an upgrade and be prepared to gamble elsewhere. It wasn't bad, but i don't think i would go back. I want to gamble at the hotel is stay in.
One of the best holidays of my life. Vegas has just the exact right mix of seediness and glamour combined. No matter what time of day you wander downstairs onto the hotel floor you'll be confronted with drunken people coming home, slightly less drunken people going out,... more
