Grand Union Hotel Reviews

May 2008, Mrs G Hailes

Stayed at the grand union hotel for four nights in november 2007 with my friend. We were looking for a budget hotel in New York and had read mixed reviews about this hotel but we could not fault it. The location was excellent, being only a few minutes walk to the Empire... more

Good, safe hotel
I just came back from a weekend in New York staying at the Grand Union. I initially chose it because the deal was so good (about $110 a night) and other reviewers said great things. Well, they were right. The room was small (about three feet on each side of the bed to the wall, and four feet in front to the TV armoire), but the bathroom was a decent size and looked like it had been remodeled the week before. Plus, everything was spotless and the hotel was very quiet. For that price, you can't expect the amentities that you would at a larger hotel, and they were lacking on a few things-- first, no clock (but I think you can get a wakeup call); second, there was only one elevator and it was slow (there are 9 floors); third, the service was friendly, but not very helpful when it came to advice about the city, especially transportation. However, it was a pleasant surprise to have a mini-fridge in the room, since I've stayed at much nicer hotels that didn't have one. The convenience is unmatched. How much time will you really be in your room anyway? It is close to several subway lines, Herald Square, the Empire State Building, etc. Also, there is a lot of cheap food near the hotel for breakfast or 24 hour places for late night snacks (hot and cold bars and deli sandwiches-- try Brooklyn Bagel for 24 hour stuff at 32nd and 5th-- 1 1/2 blocks west), so you can save money for other meals and activities. Good, safe neighborhood; good, safe hotel.
Go Grand Union!
I stayed here for a night with my boyfriend in December and I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and size of our room. The bathroom was very clean and the shower water was hot. The hotel is in an excellent location -- very close to the subway stop. I would definitely recommend this hotel to travelers on a budget. It far exceeded my expectations.
Pleasant Stay
We stayed for 5 days in December and were pleased with the hotel. I would recommend for anyone looking to stay in the heart of midtown for a reasonable price. Our room was only $110/night, but all around us ranged $200 - 800/night. The room is smaller than a college dorm and there are no aminities (ie iron), but you have a private bathroom (other discount hotels in area have communal) and it is very clean. Great location for walking to distinations, and the green line is within 1/2 block. Go see the off-broadway show Slava's Snow Show.
Nice hotel and excellent location
I found this hotel from tripadvisor. The rate is very cheap. The hotel is very nice. The room is clean but small. Their stuffs are very helpful. The location is excellent just two blocks from Empire state building and 4-5 blocks to MACYs. The subway station is 3 building away from the hotel.
Not as nice i thought it would be
Me and my girlfriend stayed in the hotel for a week from the UK. We had doubts about it before we went there. But when we saw it from outside it didnt look too bad. Even the lobby was quite nice. But the first thing we didnt like was 1 or 2 staff at the checking desk. They seemed to be quite rude and really didnt appreciate you being there. As for the other staff, the cleaners were fantastic and always made the room up to how it was when you first came in. The rooms were not bad. Very basic and it got very hot even if you had the air con on in there. The blind for the window was broke so we couldnt even see outside which was a bit disapointing as we couldnt get any natural light into the room. But its in a great location for shopping and several 24 hour stores are open just a few minutes walk away. Also quite cheap. Probably wouldnt go there again but would recommend to people with a very low budget
excellent value
I was very pleased with this hotel. The location is great-a 5 minute walk to Macy's and Empire State Building. One subway line 50 steps from hotel and main line at 34thSt. We had a quad room-one double and 2 twins. perfect for myself and 2 teens. Room was a good size and bathroom was very clean. Very plain basic furniture, a fridge but no clock radio. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great little coffee shop with good cheap food. We have stayed in 5 star hotels many times but have grown tired of paying big bucks for a room we are never in. For $130.00 a night in NYC this was fabulous value for the money. We also had 3 other families travelling with us and everyone was pleased. They had a triple room and they were small but adequate. We were all women and felt very safe. I recommend this hotel. Not fancy but GREAT VALUE.
Excellent Location, Good Value for Money
The Grand Union Hotel was a very good choice for my friend and I (two 30-something females). We felt safe at all times, the location was fab to reach most places, the room was clean and quiet (believe it or not!) and the staff were always smiling and helpful. The fact that there were 3 internet PCs in the lobby was very handy indeed. I would definitely recommend the Grand Union and would stay there again without hesitation. As for New York - a beautiful city. Have fun!
Awful bed but nice budget hotel
What can you expect at this price in Manhattan? Location is just perfect, the hotel is clean, although rooms are very small and noisy. The only real problem was our bed: it was noisy and uncomfortable, and every time you changed your position during the night you woke up...
Just right
The Grand Union was the perfect budget hotel. It was clean and well maintained, and the staff were friendly and helpful at all times. Our room was small and there were few amenities but it had what was important and its location was convenient to all the great downtown neighborhoods. If you are looking for a good, clean, safe place to lay your head and maybe watch a ballgame but are looking to spend your money in other parts of your travel, this place is a good idea.
Very good value for money
Me and the girlfriend stayed at the Grand Union earlier this month for 7 nights and we were impressed with the hotel for the price we paid. The rooms are basic but that's all we wanted, everything worked and was very clean. All the staff are fantastic and will help with anything, the maids never disturbed us as we normally wasn't leaving the room until dinner time due to some great nights out. But the room was still cleaned daily. The hotel offers free safety deposit boxes which is a nice touch, and has 3 internet computers downstairs at a reasonable rate. Just down the street from the hotel is a subway station that came in very handy. All in all it was a very enjoyable stay and would definetly go back.
