Great value, very pleased
We fancied a bit of cheap late winter sun without the Canary-islands down-market reputation so booked a package holiday in Madeira. We were not expecting much other than a place to sleep, so were pleasantly surprised by the Dom Pedro. Our room was clean, with a pleasant garden-and-sea view. The kitchen was a little basic - hot rings but no kettle(!) or microwave. But we were not disappointed as we had not expected any form of kitchen at all. Breakfast at the hotel set us up well for a day Levada-walking or Funchal-strolling. Staff were friendly, welcoming and polite. Rita Abreu, our rep, was particularly good, and we found her 40-min "welcome" talk very useful indeed. The resort is a resort in name only. Okay, there are a few good and reasonably-priced restaurants, but you need to go into Funchal for a bit more life. The Dom Pedro is not a luxury hotel, but it does what it says on the tin. This was our first package holiday for years, having travelled independently for some time; we will definitely book again through Atlantic Holidays, and when we re-vist Madeira, would look to stay at the Dom Pedro.
OK for the price.
Don't expect much in terms of 'frills' - particularly where the rooms are concerned. The accommodation is in serious need of an up-date/re-decoration. No TV or radio, and tired looking furniture, although we were pleasantly surprised to find a 'mini kitchen', with hot-plate, fridge etc. Many of the rooms have a 'sea-glimpse' rather than a 'sea view', and some have no view at all. The buffet breakfast was good, with a wide choice of hot and cold food, and the one dinner (again, buffet-style) we had was acceptable. Fortunately, we were on Bed and Breakfast terms, and there are half a dozen restaurants within a short stroll of the hotel. I recommend Vista Mar, and Figo's. There is a regular bus service (1 Euro 15) into Funchal, the capital, a journey of about 25 minutes. The bus stop is right outside the hotel, timetables available from reception. Both the indoor and the outdoor pools are quite pleasant, and because Madeira doesn't tend to attract many families with young children, they are usually quiet! Many trips are run from the Hotel, but a word of warning, be wary about going on guided 'levada' walks if you suffer from even mild vertigo... and don't be tempted to go on your own unless you are an experienced hillwalker. Finally, as we booked this holiday as a cheap deal through our local newspaper, we can't really complain. If I'd paid full price for the accommodation in particular, I would have been disappointed.
No sea and no TV
On arrival at the Dom Pedro Garajau we were offered a sub-terranean room with a view of an unmade up path and several bin bags. Fortunately, after telling Reception we were dissatisfied with this room, we were given a more pleasant first floor room with a sea view. However, the accommodation was basic and there was no TV and no radio. On the plus side, as an 'aparthotel' the room did have a fridge, sink and two hot plates. One could have holidayed on the cheap but by so doing would have missed out on several of the excellent restaurants in Garajau - Vista Mar was our favourite: a 'Mom and Pop' place which served fillet steak at 8 Euros. Wonderful! We had a buffet meal in the hotel one evening which was passable but I would recommend eating out. Apart from Visa Mar, we particularly liked Figos, just across the road from the hotel. Dom Pedro's breakfast buffet was excellent - a good choice of food and smoking and non-smoking areas in the restaurant.
An enjoyable week
A family of four adults we stayed at the hotel during the first week in April. We wondered what we we would be going to after reading some of the reviews! It's a lovely welcoming hotel and yes the rooms are old fashioned but more than adequate and kept impeccably clean by the room staff daily, with changes of fresh linen and towels. The breakfast buffet was excellent(local breads superb) and the four course buffet dinner at 15 euros incl. wine was excellent value for money. Indoor and outdoor pools were also good as was the happy hour at the bar(cocktails and the usual drinks at ridiculously low prices.) Across the road were several restaurants -Torigalo, California, Francos and Figos-the latter exceptional but all very well worth trying. We deliberately did not hire a car as public transport was cheap and frequent and the trip into Funchal was exciting down the narrow roads!! Taxis were also reasonable and available outside the hotel. Throughout the week the staff were kind, helpful cheerful and efficient. We would certainly re-visit the Dom Pedro and can confidently recommend it to anyone who is looking for value for money.
Go for Garajau
We chose the Dom Pedro Hotel because we'd stayed in Garajau previously, though at a B & B. We didn't have great hopes of it - it dominates the little village and is hideous to look at. However, our room overlooked the gardens and had a view of the ocean, so it was pleasant to sit there - it got sun most of the afternoon. We didn't eat in the hotel, but there are half a dozen good places in Garajau. Franco's and the restaurant just down from it on that block in particular are excellent. Plenty of Portuguese dishes to try out. Or you can get food from the "takeaway" (excellent fish and meat) and wine from the minimarket and eat in the room. Car hire is available next to the hotel, and you can book excursions in the hotel - our levada walk operator picked us up from Dom Pedro. The bus to Funchal only takes 20 minutes, and you get a great view of the town that way rather than driving. All in all, Garajau is a good place to stay in, and I would recommend the Dom Pedro for basic clean accommodation.
In need of restoration
The Dom Pedro Garajau has definately seen better days and is in desperate need of a make over. The hotel is made up of a number of buildings some of which are a fair distance uphill from the reception area. The rooms are very basic, tatty with paint peeling off the woodwork but they are cleaned daily although soap and shampoo seem to be in short supply so take your own. There is heating but no air conditioning in the room which got very stuffy at night, also there are no hairdryers in the room although you can get one from reception at a cost of 1 euro/day. Breaskfast is ok although the choice is very limited, the dinning room has seen better days with chipped floor tiles and in need of a fresh coat of paint. The hotel entertainment is terrible - the bar staff tried their best to liven things up and Assis (one of the bar staff) was quiet good and certainly wasted behind the bar. We were fortunate in having a guest staying at the hotel who was an excellent singer shame about the piano player. On the plus side there are a number of very good restaurants across the road try Tourigalo who also do a wonderful take away service and also Pizza Cafe on the road to Canico which does a great pizza and take away (both of these restaurants were constantly busy and very popular with the locals). Madeira is a beautiful island especially in the north and up in the montains so hire a car and get out and about. The cable car and the toboggan ride and also a must.
Good value
We got a really good last minute deal so were a little apprehensive. However we were pleasantly surprised. Reception is clean and staff mainly friendly. Indoor pool clean but right next to bar so not the best place! However there is a solarium and the roof is opened when the weather is good which was really nice. Breakfast was adequate - the cooked stuff was not too good but plenty of bread, fruit, cereals, yoghourts, cheese and ham if required. Staff attentive. Free internet access on one PC at reception (10 mins limit at a time). Rooms were tired - ours definitely needed painting but it was clean and the small kitchen with fridge, two ring cooker and sink was a bonus. The cleaning staff kept the rooms very clean every day. Convenient for buses into Funchal. All in all, considering what we paid, we were very satisfied.
Nice hotel, location could be better
A pleasant hotel, even if the rooms are basic. Good points: nice pool, not too heavily chlorinated; very friendly, helpful staff; the whole place is immaculately clean; bar prices are on the low side. Free internet access from a battered PC on the reception counter. Child friendly. The only downside is the location: it's a bus ride to anywhere, although the buses are cheap (1.15€ to Funchal), frequent (roughly hourly) and reliable: the bus company seems to have got the art of putting on a second bus at busy times very well judged. The trip to Funchal is reminiscent of Harry Potter's night bus - a white knuckle ride through the narrow lanes! Taxis aren't too expensive, and most of the drivers speak good English. There are three restaurants literally just over the road, and more a short walk away. We used the Tourigalo, O Franco and Figos and they're all excellent. The hotel buffet dinners are good value (20€ including wine) even if not of the highest standard. Good buffet breakfast, with superb local breads. The evening entertainers are, well, the sort of thing you'd expect to see on a cross-channel ferry - bloke playing the electronics, wiggly bird crooning. Enthusiastic but dull!
Ideal for a quiet, relaxed holiday.
After reading some of the reviews we were a litle reluctant to go to this hotel. However, although the hotel bedrooms are a little "tired" it is still a very nice hotel. It is very conveniant for the bus, which runs reguarly and on time, get a time table from reception. There is also plenty of places to eat, not many shops, but enough for your day to day needs. The breakfast at the hotel was very good, this is the only hotel we have stayed in abroad that does proper Tetley tea!!!! The indoor pool area is very nice , seems to be somewhere that people go to generally relax and have a drink. If you want a quiet, relaxing holiday this will suit you very well.
great place to stay
we usually go self catering but this time tried a hotel what a good idea it was the staff fantastic rooms great pool also as for having to have a hire car we found the taxis outside to be very cheap and the drivers very friendly and very well informed about their lovely island we will certainly be back there
