Just returned on the 11th July after...

Jul 2007, Mrs C A AUBREY

Just returned on the 11th July after two weeks at the Avra Beach. It is a beautiful large hotel but unfortunately there are not enough sunbeds to go around and if you must have one I recommend you take an alarm clock as people were getting up as early as 4.30 to reserve them. I know as I saw them one morning as I couldn't sleep and was out on the balcony.
The food was good although a bit repetitive, but very plentiful and quick friendly service. Although the guy at the beach bar could do with a few lessons in customer relations.
Entertainment was very repetitive although the team did work especially hard and in 45 degree heat that is no mean feat. Drinks were very limited, just one type of beer which seemed to be very weak, and a small selection of cocktails and spirits which are listed at the bar. Don't have the wine at the beach bar as mine was watered down and tasted more like Ribena.
The rooms are extremely clean and are cleaned every day with a very efficient maid service but they are very small and a bit cramped if there are more than two. Saying that, we had a stunning view over the beatifully kept gardens and the sea.
Finally just a word of warning the road outside is very very busy and it takes an age to cross. Be careful if you have elderly people or young children with you. All in all a lovely holiday; as Rhodes is a beautiful island and well worth a trip to see Rhodes old town it is breathtaking enjoy!

Just returned from a 2 wk stay at the...

Jul 2007, hartley9uk

Just returned from a 2 wk stay at the Avra... 16 June - 30 June 07.
Hotel is nice, clean and is in a lovely settings and right by the sea.
The only thing it’s situated on a very busy main road, this does not cause you any noise as once you in the complex you would never no, however it’s a real pain to cross always very busy even at 2am! Never seems to die down. So beware it can take while to get across!
Pool is lovely, really nice it’s not too deep and you will never find yourself out of depth.
Kids pool, is great not a bad size, my little girl liked it.
Sun beds are hard to get unless you are up very early (ie.6.30-7.30) and then a lot of them are broken! You can go on the stone beach but you will have to pay extra for that.
In the end we use to sit at the tables by the pool, this wasn’t bad you was right by the pool and drinks then. Dread to think what it’s like in peak season, very crowded I would think.
Room, the room we had was fine, everything we needed, fridge, hairdyer, aircon, TV, telephone. Plenty of wardrobe space and you can use your own hangers as well if you wish.
The balcony was small but fine; we had a great view of the pool, gardens, sea, and the mountains behind us. This was room 325.
The a.con was extra for us as we was there just before their peak season, which is wrong really, but we was aware of this and we needed it as some days were reaching 45degrees!
But I must say it’s the best a.con ever, you get a remote to control it, and so you can have it set at whatever temp you like. We was a little naughty and took the huge metal fob of the key ring to keep the electric on whilst we was out, this way we always came back to a cool room. (Just make sure you do this after the maids have been in).
Food, this was bearable, but nothing special, got a bit repetitive after 2 wks.
Restaurant did get busy depending on what time you went, we use to leave till later to miss the rush.
One thing men could wear shorts at the evening meal, this was fine, which the 3 males in are party was pleased about; as it was very hot still at night.
Snacks in daytime, these were the same day in dayout, pizza which you could warm up as there is a microwave(which did come in handy for me to warm my 3year olds dinner up in) dry biscuits, stale sandwiches,2types of plain cake, and some hotdog thing didn’t try those. And of course as much ice cream as you like.
Whilst we was there they did get a cold soft drink dispenser put in for you to help yourself which was better ,as before you had to wait at bar for ages!
There is also tea, coffee, hot chocolate ect.
Bar, the bar is outside by pool, only ever one barman serving never very happy and always very busy, so be prepared to wait!!
At night they also open the bar inside but again only one serving and very busy! Also the bar staff don’t like giving you a tray but do ask just be prepared for a tut!
We got this often, but when you are a group of 7 you need a tray to carry all drinks, they don’t seem to care much.
The odd ones was ok, but not many staff seemed fed up and didn’t want to be there.
Entertainment, this was the worst, it was awful, if you like bingo every night followed by the daytime entertainment team performing at night you'll be ok.
We hated it, they was fine in day playing, waterpolo, vollyball, football ect. But at night they should stop because it’s not good.
We found the evenings in ixia very boring, nothing to do at all, as the bars there are not allowed to have any live entertainment on! So you get them showing Coro, emerdale ect!
We ended up across the road at fatman slims it was a English bar, with fantastic food and cocktails. Ray the owner was a real nice guy and very helpful with anything you need to know about the island.
He has a great play area with hundreds of toys for the little ones, and it's all enclosed and safe. For the men and teenagers, he has pool, darts, arcade machine ect.
One night he did a pool match with all the guests in the pub playing; this was fun and got people talking. So if you do go you must visit fatmans right across the road.
Also the shop keepers across the road are great, very helpful, and very friendly.
All in all hotel nice, staff miserable, night times very boring. Any questions, I will be glad to help.

I and my partner returned home from...
8 / 10
Jun 2007, Miss L Prince

I and my partner returned home from Avra Beach Resort on Sunday 24/06/07.
We thought the hotel was lovely, although when we got there they didn’t have a room for us as there was a computer problem. At this point I was ready to cry as it was 5 in the morning, I’d been up for nearly 24hrs, our flight was delayed 7 hours, and to top it off our transfer didn’t pick us up. So yes I was upset.
But the guy on reception was really nice he could see I was upset. He dealt with the situation well he put us in a hotel 5 minutes away (4 Star) so we could put our head down for a few hours while they sorted the room out, we left our cases with reception.
We went back to Avra about 11.00am still no room but they told us we were being moved to a better room and they gave us free air con (This was needed all the time), the safe free for the week and a bottle of red wine.
So about 1.00pm we finally got in a new room and it was a very nice bungalow type room really close to everything and you could see the sea, entertainment and the pool from our balcony. So in the end we were glad there was a problem because things worked out for the better.
The hotel was really clean, well looked after. The room was cleaned daily and the pool was clean too.
The only small problem we had was getting a sun lounger, but I guess that’s the same where ever you go. Most days I had to get up early just to get the spot we wanted which was seconds away from our room.
They have entertainment most days, and they play music around the pool (cheesy) but something to listen to. The water polo can get quite annoying but the simple answer is try not to sunbathe where they are playing. The beach was 1 minute away but very cold water. LOL.
But as I said everything is in reaching distance, the staffs were really friendly the food isn’t too bad. I mean what you expect when they have to cater for over 300 people. It was the same most days it was average.
We only had breakfast and dinner most days, the only time we had tea was when we were going out into Rhodes town only to save us money. We ate out most nights tried out some of the nice restaurants down the road. Very nice and again really nice people:
Rhodes town was a good laugh; got to Orlandos they play a live band there very good. It is opposite a pub called Boomerang. But if you would like to stay close try Fat Man Slims which is across the busy road, nice bar staff all English nice atmosphere.
All in all I enjoyed myself we both had a great time and we are even thinking of going back next year.

Hotel is very clean and daily maid...
7 / 10
Jun 2007, Mrs J M  Elgerton

Hotel is very clean and daily maid service is second to none. Although it is situated on a very busy main road you can't hear any traffic.
The pool area is very clean but there's not enough sunbeds for everyone, towels were reserving the sunbeds from 6am onwards, and signs discouraging this were ignored simply because there was no action to back up the signs.
It is a 7 day camel ride from the sunbed area to the nearest toilet, which is situated a couple of corridors alongside the restaurant, this needs to be addressed as the floors were constantly wet and slippy due to this, could have done with an outside block of toilets.
The food was basic, fresh and something for everyone so couldn't fault them on that one, look out for the lazy waiter who has a basket of knives & forks which need to be surgically removed from his hands, how he gets away with walking around with it all day we'll never know, good entertainment value though.
The rooms are basic, two single beds shoved together (great for us honeymooners) and a further single bed against the balcony. Room included a satellite TV with BBC World News, air con at 7 Euros a day (how much), a bath with hand held shower and basin.
Remember to take a plug in mozzie deterrent coz they'll get ya!
Didn't stay in the hotel for the entertainment, went across the road to Fatman Slims, Phils bar down the road and White Corner.

I am very unsure how to write this....
6 / 10
May 2007, Miss E Goldsack

I am very unsure how to write this. I returned yesterday from a one week stay at the Avra and I must say I am glad to be home.
The hotel is lovely, very very clean and very well presented.
The worst thing is the Road! It is situated on a busy, very busy main road, which we was made to cross when we arrived at 11pm with our cases, I was very put off.
I travelled with my 17 yr old nephew, normally when you go abroad they are relaxed on drinking, he is 18 next week but he was branded with a children’s wrist band and refused any drink they was very rude, considering the law out there is 16!
When we arrived Thomas Cook had 'forgotten' our welcome packs so we had no idea when our meeting was and where. We missed it and did not see a single rep all week, their loss as we would have booked trips.
The entertainment staff are very friendly and lovely, Tto the giant Italian and his Fiancé Asterix but however there actual entertainment in evening is poor!!! 5 Euros for 1 bongo ticket and it’s the longest game of Bingo in the world.
The pool is lovely, not to cold. It is right on the beach however not a single bit of sand in sight, you will need to keep your flip flops on.
Food: The food was OK, basic, and same every night, I’m sick off salad and spaghetti and chips, not a huge selection but what is available is ok.
I would not want to go in peak season as there would be no where to sit!! Same with sunbeds, although signs saying do not reserve, beware if you are not an early bird you will struggle to get one.
The rooms were ok, basic, TV has one English Channel, BBC world, but then you’re not away to watch TV.
You must must must visit Fat Man Slims over the road, this is an English bar and the people are lovely, so very nice, and the food is great. For those who can’t resist go for the Roast, beautiful. I must say these guys made my Nephews holiday.
At the Avra you will enjoy but be warned it is not entertaining and be prepared to queue for your drinks as they have 1 bar man, bit silly for an all inclusive place.
Please watch the awful road, it worried me to death, oh and be very aware of the power cuts, especially if you are in the world’s smallest lift at the time.

My friend and I traveled to the Avra...
5 / 10
Oct 2006, Mrs S Abbey-somers

My friend and I traveled to the Avra Beach in September 2006. The first thing to mention is that this hotel is on a very busy main road, although the rooms allocated by Olympic are away from the road, it has to be said that all the amenities of the resort are across the road from the hotel, so the road with very little break in traffic, has to be crossed all the time. This would be worrying with small children or the less able bodied.
The hotel itself was clean but the rooms with an extra bed in are not particularly large, to open the fridge you have to keep moving one of the beds, in the end we rearranged the room to avoid this.
the bathroom was a veritable death trap, there was only a hand held shower over the bath and no shower curtain or cubicle so unless you used the shower at only a trickle the floor became very wet indeed, there is a drainage hole in the floor but when the shower is on the water comes back up through the hole still making the floor very wet and slippery! No mat is provided so we used our own towels on the floor to avoid accidents.
The food at the Avra Beach is of a very average standard, both my friend and I are vegetarian but even the vegetarian dishes were mixed with ham, we both ate chips and peas every night of our stay! There is only ice cream or one choice of desert as well at each meal, very disappointing as since we could not eat the main meal we were hoping to fill up on desert.
There is no outside toilet by the pool you have to go through one of the lounge areas to use the facilities, hence once more this made the floor very slippery.
The cleaning staff were lovely but the restaurant staff definitely went for the people they thought would leave the biggest tip, we were ignored the whole holiday, obviously they thought two women traveling without a man not worth bothering about. We were amused throughout at the treatment of the 'favourites' even reserving seats and hugs when they came into the restaurant, we never even got a good evening, I am so glad we left our cleaning maids 20 euros! Just think what the restaurant staff could have had if they had shown us the slightest civility!
All in all we thought the Avra Beach was more of a 3 star hotel than a 4 but the all inclusive made it up to a 4 star. We certainly would not go back to this particular hotel but if you are a couple traveling, able bodied and with no children then this might suite.

May 2006, Miss E Griffin

Went last summer-had a brilliant time. The hotel was really lovely-clean, lovely pool, right on the beach, plenty of entertainment and plenty of food! The food was buffet style for breakfast, lunch and dinner but there were self service cakes, ice-cream and drinks all day. Alcoholic drinks were served in big measures as well!
It was right near the airport so transfer was only 10 or 15 minutes, the only thing I would advise you on is the offer of lunch to take away if you’re going out for the day-on the last day we wanted to go to the water park so we asked for a take away lunch the night before. We received a bag of two tomatoes, 2 small brown barmcakes and 2 bottles of water.
When we asked the restaurant manager for some ham or egg, he gave is a filthy luck and then went to the kitchen and returned with two boiled eggs!

Beautiful hotel right on the beach,...

May 2006, Mr T Walsh

Beautiful hotel right on the beach, only 10 mins drive from the airport which meant it really is worth getting a taxi which will probably cost less than 10 euros.
Staff were fine, not overly friendly but not rude in any way and helpful enough. Food good quality although a little repetitive, but that’s quite common with all inclusive. Spotless in all areas, rooms cleaned thoroughly daily. Beach very shingley but pool was lovely.
All in all I would recommend this for any ages, great for families, couples or elderly people.

Aug 2005, Miss L Horton

The hotel itself is very clean and very nice to look at.
The bar staff are friendly enough and so are the restaurant staff. The food in the restaurant was a bit repetitive but everyone always found something they wanted to eat so not a big problem.
The pool and beach area is plenty big enough for all the guests staying and the pool is kept clean and it looks great when it is lit up at night. The sea is warmer than the pool and is great to go in if you don’t mind walking across about a metre of pebbles to get to it.
There could’ve been more entertainment during the day as music and games went on from 10-12 and then 4-6 with nothing in the four hours between.
The animation team make up for the disappointing days during the nigh time entertainment though and baby dance is something for everyone to join in with - no matter what age! All nights were pretty good - just avoid the live Greek band night - not good!
And also the animation team have Sundays off which means no day or night time entertainment.
Not all of the 14 of our party enjoyed the holiday but us teenagers definitely did and I wouldn’t hesitate about going back again - if only to see giacomo, Elena, Antonio and alessandro(the animation team) who made the holiday amazing!

Sep 2004, Mrs V Pegg

We are just back from 1 lovely week in glorious Rhodes. We stayed in a bungalow for 4 people with a fantastic view of the sea and pool. Beautifully refurbished to very high standards Inc new bathroom and a power shower. The hotel was spotless and the food was plentiful and varied. From spinach pie to chips. Drinks inc them making you up cocktails, and ice cream, cakes and sandwiches all day. The hotel is in a good place only a short ride from Rhodes town. The brochure is very accurate and we wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.
