Worried by reviews, needed have bothered!

First time at this hotel (although been to Rhodes before) and travelled as a group of 4 (2 couples). I was worried about staying at this hotel after reading some of the awful reviews on here however, I needed have. Arrived about 10:30pm and was a short journey from the airport to the hotel. On arrival the reception was nice and staff very helpful. I was concerned when they gave us rooms on floor 2 (having read the reviews!). Yes the corridor floor was a bit worn (the floors above had marble) and maybe needed a lick of paint. The rooms themselves were fine. Basic rooms but you only sleep there!!The rooms were clean and no cockroaches seen for the whole 2 weeks we were there. In fact, we probably had a better deal than those on higher floors because our key to our rooms were separate from our 'electric' card so we were able to leave our air con on whilst we went out. The floors above have a 'card key' which means they have to use the same card to access the room and to turn the electric on. I certainly wouldn't have paid extra money to upgrade!
The food was fine although possibly a bit repetitive-if you like veal you will enjoy it here! but there are also plenty of other things to eat. Make sure the men take long trousers for the evening (or at least shorts below the knee) because the main man tells you off if you don't and makes them change. There is a clear sign about this outside the restaurant though. Although we were all inclusive we didn't go in for lunch. Instead we just used the outside taverna to help ourselves to hotdogs, spag bol etc and ate by the pool. Yes there are wasps around the self service fizzy drinks area but they don't really bother you (and I have a phobia of them!!).
As for the pool, there aren't really enough sun loungers for everyone. At one point I was getting up at 5am in the morning to secure some and even then they were practically all taken! Then we noticed people leaving their towels on the sun loungers when they left in the evening. Some people reserved them and didn't even turn up all day. Basically they are selfish. People would also reserve sun loungers for their children who would spend all day in the pool! The pool itself is quite deep. The only shallow bit is by the steps into the pool (one set of steps!). Due to this, the water polo is played across the pool here and that makes it difficult for older people to get in and out of the pool (piece of advice-don't get a sun lounger near where they play water polo!!). Aqua aerobics also has to take place in the shallow bit and that makes it very cramped! If you aren't a competent swimmer you may need a flotation device. Generally we found the pool fine except for one horrible english child that was allowed to do what he wanted by his parents.
The beach. This is directly accessible from the pool side. Yes it is pebble and sand and you have to go over the pebbles to get to the sea. Many people bought water proof footwear for the sea and this is probably a good idea-trying to maintain some dignity whilst walking over hot pebbles is incredibly difficult!! There are a few stray dogs and cats around but they don't bother you unless you call them over-in fact I felt sorry for the poor kitten who wasn't left alone by all the children.
Entertainment-this all depends on how involved you get with it. There was plenty on offer during the day-volleyball, table tennis, water polo, stretching etc. The entertainment staff during the day are the same as the night and so they do pretty long shifts-despite this they are still friendly and helpful. The entertainment in the evening could have been a little bit better and sometimes it felt like the guests were actually the entertainment (karaoke etc). However some guests were extremely grumpy and didn't know the idea of "fun". You will definitely find that the "Shakey Shakey" song and dance catches on pretty quickly. As for watersports on the beach, there is a hut but we didn't really have any idea what they did and there wasn't any signage about it.
Weather-We had 14 days of sunshine and temperatures up to 37 degrees. It was great if you were sat by the pool, not so good for sight seeing. Our friends hired a car whilst we were out there and this enabled us to have some independence. Catching a bus to Rhodes town is easy (2 euros 60 cent per person) and the bus stops right opposite the hotel. We also took a cruise to Lindos (this leaves from Rhodes town) which was fun. It is however 2.5 hours on a boat there and 2.5 hours back, so not good if you get sea sick. We also went to the Waterpark in Faliraki which was good fun. Lots of rides but the only downside is the floor gets so hot it is difficult to run over without burning your feet!!
Yes planes do fly directly over the hotel however this didn't affect our holiday at all. We didn't hear them at night time and during the day you were able to watch them fly over whilst sun bathing and even then there weren't alot of them. Its the price you pay for being close to the airport and cutting down the transfer time!
All in all, I'm glad the hotel proved some of the reviews wrong. Yes I have stayed in better 4* hotels but I certainly don't think the hotel deserves some of the reviews that it has got. After all a holiday is what you make it!

No where near 4*!!

My friend and I have just returned from a 7night stay here. The hotel is pleasant enough - we were on the first floor and like other people have said the first and second floors have yet to be rennovated. The room was clean - in the visible areas - under the bed was disgusting. The room had a double bed and a single bed, desk which was peeling and wardrobe which had a really musty smell. The bathroom was acceptable but there was a crack in the bath and there was no way it was 4* standard! The room had a new airconditioning unit, as the old green box had broken - however it took us three trips back to reception before they would hand over the remote control for it. We also figured out that the air con only works when the card is in the slot - therefore a good tip is to leave it in all day and just unattach the key.
We also found that the walls between the rooms were really thin - and late in the evening there were children screaming and running around in their rooms, then at 7am in the morning the same followed by huge banging of doors.
We had a reasonable view from our balcony of the top of the restaurant roof and the pool. The pool area and beach were cleaned every day however the grates around the pool looked like they hadn't been cleaned for ages! There are no lifeguards on duty at any time and considering the depth of the pool i would find this extremely worrying with children running around or playing in the pool. We also discovered on the last night that the majority of sunbeds were taken about 1am, before people went to bed - despite the supposed non-reservation rule!
We spent our time on the beach rather than by the pool-this was much more relaxing - however you have to watch some guests as they seem to have little concept about personal space! Also the hotel beach has no sunshades - despite what the pictures show and next door's hotel has much comfier sunbeds!
We were all inclusive and thought that there was a good range of food each night and at the pool bar. The drinks were only available in a tiny plastic cup and water was difficult to acquire! On a couple of occasions we filled our water bottles up from the machine and were told this was not allowed as part of all inclusive - so we ended up drinking the water from our bathroom and weren't ill as a result!!!!
We had good experiences from both bars - however at the pool bar a queue did build up - not helped by other nationalities pushing in! Our observations from a number of nights was that the pool bar was understaffed. They were mostly pleasant, however one member of staff had an attitude that appeared as if the guests were inconveniencing her. She was rude to the guests and the germans were rude back - we avoided that end of the bar!
We hired a car from the hotel car hire - which worked really well. we paid 40euro for the day. We drove to the waterpark in falaraki (about 40mins) but did have to stop for a more detailed map in a supermarket. Everything is much closer than you would expect and there were limited signs letting you know when you had reached somewhere. The waterpark was great - spent about 4hours there - however you have to keep a close eye on the germans with the rubber rings! We then drove over the mountains to the butterfly valley which was very peaceful with a LOT of steps!! the butterfly's were well camouflaged but everywhere once you spot one! the views over the mountains were spectacular and well worth a drive even if you dont visit the butterfly valley.
We also caught the local bus into rhodes - which was 5euro return. We discovered that the bus we caught to rhodes was not the one we needed to get to go back!! the bus was also worse than london buses at rush hour for overcrowding and had no windows to open so was horrible! However once we got into Rhodes town it was lovely. Just having a wander around the old town and the small cobbled streets is well worth it and you find all sorts of gems hidden away.
On the fifth day, before leaving our rooms for dinner we discovered that both of our purses had been stolen. They had been locked in our bags, in our suitcases and the keys had been hidden. We had the room key with us and the locks were not forced. On reporting it to the hotel they were not at first bothered and only when we made a fuss did they say they would take us to the police station. On the next day we had a meeting with the manager which resulted in more acknowledgement of the situation. however he said that he had known the staff for years and was unwilling to admit that it could have been them. We also had no apology, and when we stated it was completely unacceptable from any hotel - let alone one that is supposed to be 4* there was silence!
If you do choose to stay in this hotel I would say - 1. make sure you book a superior room - unless you dont mind 2*accommodation, 2. Take all your personal belongings with you at all times! or if not make sure you chain your property in a way that no-one could possibly break in. 3. Just don't bother - I'm sure there are much nicer hotels on the island for similar prices.

Its not really that bad

After reading reviews we were more than worried but needn't have been. We think those who had bad rooms were on floors 1 and 2 because we were on the 5th floor and our rooms were excellent. Recently updated, very modern and extremely clean. Sheets and towels changed daily. Food was excellent, brilliant choice every day. We stayed for 11 nights and variety of food was not repetative. On the down side, yes drinks definitely watered down, and because all inclusive there are queues for the drinks. You have to pay after 11 p.m. Entertainment not very good at all. Dogs, cats and kittens on site. Staff went on strike for one day because they hadn't been paid for 3 months, but now sorted. Nothing to do around there, so hire a car from across road, we paid 35 euros a day no excess. Beach pebbly and rubbish up and down shore line.We had good time but there was 4 of us.

We have just arrived back from the Hotel thouroughly dissapointed. ~i agree with everything the reviewer before us stated. The food was repetitive everyday and not fresh, even local melons were tasteless. As for the room, well air conditioning not working properly, in fact, it didn't work properly throughout the hotel. which made sleeping near on impossible. The bed was just a off white sheet placed direct on to a mattress which was blood stained, and not very inviting at all. very tired and tatty decor. Due to late night flighs our last day was spent in a room that we had to pay an additional 40 euros for. This room was even worse, one of the single beds was pushed up against a wall that was bare cement unpainted, the fridge was all rusty and dirty i would not want to put anything in it. the sheets did not fit to the end of the bed, so you had unprotected mattresses to lay on. I could go on... but whats the point, i shall not be returning and would not recommend to any body.

Fire hose reels still attached to the walls and still connected. Breeding ground for legionnaires desease.
Should be closed down.

Just got back from this Hotel. I thought it was okay for what we paid My Husband Daughter, her husband and their two children. My daughter and Husband got so fed up with the food it was like a 3 star hotel, myhusband had a row the the Manger of the resturant about the qualtity of his food. the hotel is fab lots going on the the kiddies and the team work really hard. This hotel could be really good with some proper management, thats all it needs. Rooms average although I got floor 1 it was still okay but 3-7 are exceptionally good I was told! Although I wouldn't go again to this hotel. Reception staff are excellant all of them very helpful and most other staff are but I did hear a rumour some staff hadn't been paid for 3 mths! The hotel is very family friendly and I was very pleased with it with my 2yr grandson.
Overall I enjoyed my stay but theres not enough to do you cant walk out anywhere its very quiet only one bar and two other places to eat.
I suppose like most places it has ots good points and bad!

Just come back from an AI weeks holiday at Doreta. Hotel is nowhere near 5* more like 3* at best. Reception staff are very friendly and helpful, although a couple of the bar staff were often abrupt and rude. Food is ok but choice is limited, ate out a couple of times just to try something different. As for the entertainment, well there is none for adults, although plenty of activities for kids and credit to the animators for working very hard. Rooms are very basic but clean so don't expect too much. Overall I would say average at best, probably would try another hotel if coming back to Rhodes.

On arivall things went smoothly. The receptionist was very helpful. Our room on floor 1 was very basic but clean. The bathroom was a good size but the shower over
the bath had to be hand held as it did not sit properly in its holder leaving us soaked along with the floor if we did not hold it.
the bath was ok. Clothes space limited no proper drawer area for small items.
The lifts were very narrow and i noticed a man with a wheel chair struggling to squeeze himself in to get the door to shut. These lifts could not take more than two people with suitcases and are not the fastest. On the ground floor where all the food and entertainment is there is only two toilets for all guests. Health and safety issue there. I waited on different occasions up to 10mins to get in. It was actually quicker to go to my room to use the toilet.
cleanliness -everywere was very clean including the pool bar and the surrounding areas were washed and cleaned every night.
The entertainement was 90% for children and this included night time as well.
At 2300hrs the all inclusive option seemed to stop and you then paid for your drinks. With the queues to get a drink due to only in some instances being manned by 1 barman ment that you certainly didn't overdo this option.
food was basically the same each night. Both service areas could have been better utilised to cut down on long queues. Espically when people were just needing to get to the cold section for salad items. The restaurant manager was excellent as were the very friendly hardworking staff.
My advice on transport is to use public transport 2.50euro ea way taxi 24euro ea way to rhodes town 13euro to airport.

Despite website saying it was a 5* hotel and spa, its was 4 star. No spa, None of the facilities stated, no free non motorised water sports (unless you count swimming), no gym, no spa, no second restaurant. Our room was fine, but we had a night flight, and there was no late check out availible, despite what the travel agent said. Meaning we had to put our name down for a 20min slot in a courtsey room. Due to bad communication from staff not all gusets knew they had to put their name down on a list to get a slot in the courtesy room , meaning they were too late and had to get changed in the middle of the reception area. Also things were stolen from our room, on the 3rd day, for the duartion of holiday tried to speak to the manager who was never in the hotel. The counter staff were un helpful, but cannot say if it down to rudeness or poor running. the luggage area you store bags when you check out is in the main reception area, right next to the main entrance, nothing is locked or secure. there is only 1 restaurant and a snack bar, meaning that there is no vaierty at all in the menu. The food was only barely labelled, the extent was a sign above meat dishes saying what you were eating, fish, chicken, pork.
When things were stolen staff most unhelpful and on the 2nd day of me trying to speak to the manager, I was given a map and told to catch a bus to the police station.
the beach was nice and so was the pool - when there was a life guard on duty.
I never got to speak to the manager and felt like I was constantly being fobbed off by staff

Doreta Beach Hotel: August 2009
After reading the amount of people complaining about this hotel, and the advice about not accepting floors 1 or 2, I was very worried about this holiday. I needn’t have been. Floor 2 was a bit grotty in the corridor, but rooms generally comfortable and similar to anything I have stayed in in the Balearics. Beds were a bit uncomfortable, and I occasionally woke up with a stiff back and numb arms. Bathrooms were clean, and towels were changed daily by pleasant cleaning staff.
Food and drink was plentiful. Food pretty much excellent, and certainly showed how much effort they put into the preparation of it. My wife especially liked the variety of the food, and was constantly goading me to try new things...Drinks were okay, the tasteless “VAP” beer got on my nerves after the first week, and I ended up buying cans of Stella from the shop over the road, or just having shorts.
Entertainment was as many people have described: mainly for the kids, up to 22:00 then the adult entertainment was pretty much rubbish (except for the greek musicians and dancers – the bazouki player was sensational!)Entertainment always finished at 23:00 though.
Pools were very clean, but it was the usual story about people hogging sunbeds. I woke up very early one morning (05:30), and had a walk around. By 05:45 am, people were coming down and putting towels on sunbeds. No staff removed them, but then most were jealously guarded by the male of the clan. One greedy family grabbed TEN beds on the far end of the beach. TEN!! There were five in our party, but I would never think of reserving 5 sunbeds, as you don’t all use them at the same time. I also think it was British people who were the worst for this, as I had a stroll around to the German hotel just down the beach, and at 09:30 in the morning, there were probably 50% of the sunbeds free, including about 12 by the pool. 1-0 to the Germans I believe!!
Beach is shingly, and i would recommend a pair of those rubber slipper-type shoes to wade in and out of the sea, as it's like putting your feet into a rock tumbler!
Rhodes town was very good, especially if you like roaming around old castle ruins etc, and the clock tower was well worth the $5 entrance fee (free drink) for the view across Rhodes town. The old town also has a huge market which is great to mooch around, but can be a bit pricey. I bought a cowboy hat (practical for sun on face and neck) in shop opposite doreta beach hotel that cost $7.90, in Rhodes old town it was $13!! Just check some prices before you go. We did go to Faliraki, but at lunch time it was dead. presumably all the young ravers were in bed sleeping off their nightly shenanigans - beach seemed nice, but no breeze, so it was VERY hot!!
Over all, a very pleasant place to stay
My main problem was the fact that we booked through Thomas Cook in January for the following August, and we asked for rooms with a sea view. We didn’t get one despite paying around £5,750 for 5 of us in three rooms. Our rooms overlooked the car park at the front. How early do you have to book to get a sea view?? I certainly won’t bother with Thomas Cook again, as they are probably like the concert ticket companies who only get tickets for the seats at the back, and charge like a wounded bull for the privilege of you booking with them. The aeroplane journey was extremely poor as well. There was just NO room in front of my legs and you are made to feel guilty for trying to recline your seat! And charging £2.50 for a cup of tea is just taking the mick.
No, Thomas Cook are Rob dogs and I will never use them again, and would advise anyone else to avoid them like the plague. Nice hotel though...
