We have just returned from 1 weeks holiday, at the El Greco Hotel in Crete. What can i say, but what a fantastic hotel !! From the moment we arrived, the hotel staff were friendly, cheerful, helpful and attentive. The rooms are clean, and well kept, the food is always fresh, well presented, and varied. The staff, are the best i have ever experienced. The pool areas are clean , and there are plenty of sunbeds, well spread out. The hotel is situated right on the beach, and there are grassy areas you can also sunbathe on, with beds, and sun shades readily available. Although there is not much directly outside of the hotel, there are plenty of shops/bars restuarants etc a short bus/taxi ride away. The only disappointment was the evening entertainment, out of 6 nights, i would say only 2 were worth watching, but, even so, it would not put me off returning.

My parents stayed at this hotel every year for 25 years, couldn't understand why until recently when I stayed there. After 2 weeks I really could not find one fault with this hotel. The staff were wonderful, very friendly and helpful, rooms very comfortable and clean, the food excellent with plenty of choice. Had not intended to stay in the hotel in the evenings for the entertainment but did most evenings and found it enjoyable. The entertainment team were great obviously worked very hard to provide a few really fun evenings.
My father passed away in April so unfortunately didn't make it this year to the El Greco but I'm sure I will now be keeping up the family tradition, in fact have already booked for October and can't wait.

If your idea of a good holiday is being in a hotel with loads of Brits, then don't book the El Greco, as there is a huge mix of nationalities, but when we were there mainly Eastern European and German.
If however you are open minded enough to actually mix with foreigners on your foreign holiday (!) then this hotel has a lot to offer.
Fabulous pool area which never really felt too crowded and then straight down to the beach where sunloungers are provided free.
Food was fine - standard hotel buffet style with some Greek specialities if you chose to experiment. The hotel snack bar which is open for lunch was very good - not cheap (as normal in a hotel) but tasty and big portions.
For me the standout was the service which in all areas of the hotel was second to none - I work in tourism and have travelled a lot but rarely do you find staff that seem so genuinely friendly and efficient.
Drawbacks? Some of the public areas looked a bit worn, so maybe time to invest in a refurbishment. The hotel is quite a long way from any resort centre, but there is a regular bus service costing 1.20€ down to the town so it’s quite cheap and easy to get out and about.
The hotel entertainment was truly dire - not even funny dire, just painful.
Overall though, a really great hotel to visit either as a couple or for a family holiday.

Bed broke 1st night, no sleep, repaired. Bed broke second night, no sleep. Changed bed.
Quality 5 T hotels do not have the mattress on wooden slats like a students bed
Food is good but it hardly ever changes. Pool is good. Entertainment is terrible kids shows, synchro swimming kids shows light show etc.
If I knew the whole hotel was filled with non English speaking guests I would not have booked. There are only 3 English couples on the whole of the complex.
Staff are superb but when you talk to them very few can talk in English. I do not like being told to put toilet paper in a bin in the bathroom.
There is no way this is a 5T hotel, we stayed in the George in Cyprus that was a good 4T.

The hotel facilities and food here were excellent, location right by the sea with loungers available for use by guests.
There was a well-maintained swimming pool with eating facilities nearby and in addition several other small plunge pools. We travelled with Portland but were dealt with in exactly the same way as if we had booked with Thomson (which is generally more expensive) so we would recommend that this is the best way to book a TUI package and would do so again.
The main problem with the resort was that the hotel was somewhat isolated from the rest of the resort but there is a regular bus service if the walk is too much.
Flights were the standard charter cattle trucks but that is to be expected with this type of holiday. Overall recommended but if the isolation is a problem then the other Grecotel in Rethymnon was better placed (and looked good from the outside).

What more can I say that has not all ready been said , one real negative swimmers and beach walkers, at the beach, there are concrete groins that go out in the sea if they are wet on the surface be very very carefull it is like a sheet of ice , the amount of people we saw slip over including myself well, and there are no signs up to say slippery surface , beware!!!
