Whilst acknowledging all the favourable comments made to date, I have a comment to make about night noise. My neighbour next door had a hearing problem which resulted in his TV volume being set to his satisfaction but not to mine. The walls permit noise to be transmitted... more

Absolutely superb! This was our first holiday with our baby who was 7 months old. The staff couldn't do enough for us. From the moment we entered the hotel the manager came to speak to us (we'd had baby milk and nappies pre delivered to the hotel) and explained that our... more

Very pleasant and friendly 4 star hotel. The staff are brilliant and the culture seems to be that of a family. The manager made himself known upon our arrival, and was always around during our stay. The food was of good quality, and a enough choice to suit every taste. The... more

Six of us, three of whom were over 70, have just spent two weeks at the Riu Palace in Madeira. We usually holiday together at this time of the year, and this year was probably the best we have had. The service at the Riu Palace was superb, absolutely faultless. The rooms... more

I have just spent a week at the Riu Palace. Simply superb. The hotel is situated in a quieter location on the island and its facilities are excellent. The cleanliness throughout all areas of the hotel was at an extremely high standard. I would have to say however, that... more

The accommodation at the Rui Palace is very spacious and clean (as would be expected of a 4 star hotel!) with good facilities on site. All the staff we encountered went out of their way to be helpful and if there was a query they dealt with it promptly. The meals were... more

Great Hotel
Stayed at this hotel for the second time in 3 months. Very comfortable and nothing is too much trouble for the staff who are very attentive and professional. Two excellent swimming pools and plenty of sun loungers. Food is buffet style and there is plenty to choose from. Quiet location. Look forward to going back again soon.
Clean, friendly, highly recommended
Being greeted with a complementary glass of Madeira wine during a smooth check in set the standard for a great stay - we had booked a room with a ‘limited sea view’, but still had a fantastic front view of the ocean. The rooms - spotless, comfortable beds, tastefully furnished with a large balcony which had reclining lounger type chairs. The bathroom was also very clean and spacious with a powerful shower with fitted rails in and around the bath area for older residents and an alarm cord, also in the bath area. The food - excellent, hot, plentiful and expertly cooked with lots of choice. Most meat had the fat painstakingly carved off which is rare and was appreciated. Lovely looking salad dishes with dressings, but could have better labelling as to whether or not they contained fish / meat / seafood, which was a bit frustrating, and tended to avoid just in case (the main dishes and soups are clearly labelled however). The staff – all were so professional, helpful and genuinely seemed to want to be there, many sharing a laugh with the guests. About 10 minutes after we had checked into our room we had a call from Reception to make sure we were happy with our room. The bar - moderately priced, the same as the minbar. The entertainment wasn’t great, but watchable, and did their best! They had a classical piano player in the lounge bar which was quite nice. The grounds - well looked after and attractive and the pools clean, however the cold pool floor had a few chunks of the concrete missing in places which were quite sharp, this could really be fixed. That aside, general access in the hotel would be good for people with mobility problems. The hotel shop is exorbitant, get the stuff in Funchal for less than half the price. There is a free courtesy bus from the hotel to Funchal and back 6 days a week, but you must book it from 6pm the previous night. In summary; we had an absolutely brilliant holiday and got rather depressed about he thought of going home! There wasn’t really much for a family if they are expecting to be entertained, we didn’t see any kids clubs or ‘entertainers’ but the hotel seems to be catering mainly for more mature guests and romantic couples which was one reason why we chose it. Notes on the resort: There is a promenade at the bottom of the hotel but no real beach, its all rocks. There are no shops nearby at all apart from an overpriced dirty looking supermarket and a couple of snack bars, and it is extremely hilly which is very pretty but probably not great for the less mobile.
A very friendly, clean and peaceful place to be
On arrival we where given the wrong room but a quick visit to reception and that was corrected. The Director and his staff are of the most professional and friendliest people I have ever come across. The hotel is just typical of a Riu Palace! Excellant in every way. one week is not enough to visit Maderia as there is such a lot to see, I am also very glad to see that it has not been spoilt by the typical touristy type things that a lot of countries have gone in for. Hopefully that will continue. It is a very beautiful country to visit I certaninly will go back...
Simply the best
Probably the best hotel for food service quality of staff we have stayed in for at least ten years.. bar prices were reasonable and the evening entertainment very good.I am trying very hard to think of a negative aspect but can't find one. a word of warning though to those going for the first time the resort is hilly and if you're not very mobile this could,be a problem. but there is a regular bus service and a courtesy bus to Funchal every day. All in all an excellent holiday in a top class hotel
Near Perfect Palace
After a super hectic week cruising, we were glad to arrive at the RIU Palace. Everything already said about this hotel is 99% true - wonderful food, lovely rooms, hard working staff etc etc. On the not so good side however:- - entertainment is poor - specially when compared to that on offer aboard Thomson Celebration. - tiny minibar in room means no room for own drinks. We asked if we could use the fridge for our own drinks but were told to buy the hotels' drinks. - no ice available for drinks in room. - not allowed to use own kettle to make drinks in room. - prices in hotel shop are unbelievably high. The 4 star hotel next door has a shop selling water, wine, etc at competitive prices - don't bother to trek up hill and steps to the one and only "minimarket" as the prices there are ridiculously high. For shopping of any sort, go on free hotel shuttle bus to Funchal and visit Pingo supermarkets for great value.
Brill stay at the palace
Just returned from the Riu Palace had a relaxing time, the staff are very attentive and friendly. The quality of the food is superb. Facilities are good although the indoor gym is limited.Pools are good, with the cold pool being really cold. Breakfasts are a treat, have it out on the terrace, with a glass of bubbly and a big piece of cake decadent or what! Rooms are of a high standard and kept very clean. The entertainment was average and geared towards the more mature guest, could have done with a bit of a disco and a boogie .Madeira is a beautiful island and if you do go make sure to go on one of the bus tours some spectacular views. In summary a top quality hotel, well deserving of the 4 stars and a holiday designed to relax even the most stressed out souls.
Palace is still good
Earlier correspondents spoke highly of the Palace and I have just returned from a week there and found it first class . There was an excellent choice of food and it was always of a good quality. The staff with out exception were friendly anf helpful and the hotel was kept spotlessly clean. It is a quiet sea front location about 8 miles from Funchal to which the hotel runs an efficient courtesy bus service.
Good, although remote hotel
The hotel has a sort of "Las Vegas" feel, with big lobbies and extremely high ceilings. Overall very good hotel but I hate it when you arrive at a hotel and discover that one of the hotel pools is closed and under repair, and they are doing other (loud) building repairs. The hotel is far from any other village although there is a great bus service into Funchal. Take the public bus to have a really scenic drive along the coast road for about 2€. Don't even think of calling the debris strewn rocks by the hotel a beach. Despite the above comments our review on the hotel is positive. We were well received and looked after by front desk staff, and restaurant staff were extremely friendly and attentive. It was a kind of "all in" holiday which some people will really enjoy, with the only other options being outside the hotel at the top of one of Funchals famous winding roads.
Loved the hotel, shame about noisy germans
We have just returned from a week at the Riu Palace Madeira 23/5. The hotel is excellent, the staff cannot be faulted, they are incredibly efficient and friendly, they make every guest feel special, nothing was too much trouble. Food is excellent with a great choice of meat, fish, cheeses etc, wonderful desserts. There is an option for waiter served hot dishes also if you do not wish to have buffet every night. Every morning there is the chance to sit on the terrace sipping champagne, what a way to start the day!! The only negative points we have to make are the location. At night the entertainment in the hotel is lacking, the resident pianist is excellent, but the hotel doesn't focus on evening entertainment as a priority, this is a shame as the hotel is out of Funchal and the only transport available after 5.30 is a taxi and bus. We were perhaps unlucky in the fact there were quite a few noisy German guests who seemed intent on waking the whole hotel up at 2am, they obviously found their own entertainment!! Madeira is ideal for older guests and we are in our late 40s and actually felt quite young, a bonus these days!! We love Riu hotels and will be trying another location later on in the year, having stayed at the Riu Palace de Las Americas last year in Mexico, we felt that could not have been topped, but service and food wise the Madeira hotel was exceptional
Fab hotel on a fab island
As the other reviewers have said, this is a brilliant hotel which you really cant fault. The island is fantastic and well worth a visit for the scenery alone. We hired a car and would certainly recommend this. It's easy to get about and within minutes you climb high into the mountains with stunning views out to sea. The lavada walks are breath taking too and even though we didnt plan to do much walking, we eventually did three long lavada walks - we would have done more but our time ran out. Will definitely return to the Riu and Madeira in the future.
