Absolutely superb! This was our first holiday with our baby who was 7 months old. The staff couldn't do enough for us. From the moment we entered the hotel the manager came to speak to us (we'd had baby milk and nappies pre delivered to the hotel) and explained that our supplies were in our room and if there was anything we needed whilst we were there just to ask someone. Then the Head chef came to speak to us to ask us what we'd like for our daughter - any special requests etc. Everyday he did pureed vegetables for her that had been cooked without added salt etc. The staff in the hotel were amazing from the reception through to the restaurant and bars and the cleaners - incredibly polite, professional and friendly. The room was spacious, elegantly decorated and quiet. Food was fantastic - couldn't fault it. The selection was brilliant. Before having our daughter we had regularly used Riu hotels and this doesn't fail to meet the high expectations of the chain. Only down side was the pool was freezing - however, it was at the start of June! I would highly recommend this hotel - in fact my in laws have just returned and we're planning on going again next year. If you're wanting relaxation in calm, quiet surroundings then this is the place to go!

The Hotel RIU Palace Madeira is a relaxing resort. Food is delicious and every morning Champagne waiting there for you.
The staff are very friendly, efficient and very welcoming. There is a gym 2 outdoor pools 1 indoor pool ping pong table, pool table a little shop in the reception a Tennis court and a children’s playground.
The hotel is near Funchal and we visited at Christmastime. The lights were amazing!!! Every street was decorated with eye catching displays of sparkle and delight. Traditional carols were played out throughout Funchal and school children sang daily at the outdoor theatre in the centre of town.
If you would like a week of excellent value for money, lavish surroundings, superb care, and attention from first class staff, outstanding views and a bit of warmth to your bones during the cold British winter......then RIU Palace Madeira is a first class choice.

Very pleasant and friendly 4 star hotel. The staff are brilliant and the culture seems to be that of a family. The manager made himself known upon our arrival, and was always around during our stay. The food was of good quality, and a enough choice to suit every taste. The rooms were always very clean with a good maid service. The pool and surrounding area was well presented, with plenty of parasols for everyone (no need for the towel on the lounger senario).
All in all our holiday in this hotel was excellent (have stayed in much worse 5 star hotels)
Will definitely return to this splendid hotel.

Six of us, three of whom were over 70, have just spent two weeks at the Riu Palace in Madeira. We usually holiday together at this time of the year, and this year was probably the best we have had.
The service at the Riu Palace was superb, absolutely faultless. The rooms themselves were spacious with plenty of cupboard space, good sized bathroom with shower and bath. We did not have a balcony as we were on the ground floor and had patios which led out onto a grassed area at the side of the hotel but still with a sea view.
We had two meals in the restaurant downstairs and would definitely recommend visitors to take up the opportunity of eating here. The service was excellent and we were made to feel very special.
The hotel itself was very clean and well cared for, the pools fantastic, all three of them - I recommend the unheated outdoor pool for a good wake up call to the system! The entertainment most nights was quite watchable, particularly the Madeiran folk dancing - that was great fun, particularly when the guests had to join in. The resident band was also first class.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the Riu Palace Madeira to anyone. Madeira itself is a beautiful island and visitors should take the opportunity to explore - the coach trips offered by Thomson we felt were very good value for money - we went on two full day and two half day excursions. The weather was mixed while we were there, we did have a few wet days but it didn't stop us enjoying our holiday.

I have just spent a week at the Riu Palace. Simply superb. The hotel is situated in a quieter location on the island and its facilities are excellent.
The cleanliness throughout all areas of the hotel was at an extremely high standard. I would have to say however, that the hotel's best asset by far is it's staff, the service we received from them all was second to none, and they were friendly, helpful and courteous at all times. From the moment we arrived until the minute we left the hotel on our departure day we were made to feel welcome and treated as truly valued guests.
I would without hesitation recommend this hotel to anybody and would not consider staying anywhere else if I ever visit Madeira again.

" This hotel is excellent, how often do... "
Submitted By: Mrs E Bedborough
This hotel is excellent, how often do we book holidays after choosing from a brochure or internet and on arrival the accommodation is not as described, well with the Riu Palace Madeira Hotel it was just the opposite, everything was as described in the Thomson Brochure.
The Hotel is immaculate, this includes not only the bedrooms and inside the hotel but also the swimming pools, sun terraces, toilets and the surrounding gardens.
The bedrooms are a good size, there is plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. The bathrooms have a shower and a bath, a hairdryer is also provided. Clean towels are provided every day. There are two chairs on the balcony, so after a day relaxing around the pool, or a busy day on one of the excellent trips of the island, you can enjoy further relaxation time enjoying a drink from the mini bar, whilst also taking in the late afternoon sun on your balcony. Each room has a television, safety deposit box (additional charge for this) and a telephone.
The location of the hotel is very quite and peaceful, there are a few shops a short walk away. Should you wish to go into Funchal the hotel runs a free daily shuttle bus which runs at various times of the day.
There is entertainment every evening in the hotel, some nights it is the hotels own band, other nights the band plus other entertainment, such as dancers, magician, local folklore.
The staff in the Riu Palace are extremely well trained. They are so polite and give a fast and efficient service at all times. They are a credit to such a wonderful hotel.
We will certainly return in the future.

" The accommodation at the Rui Palace... "

The accommodation at the Rui Palace is very spacious and clean (as would be expected of a 4 star hotel!) with good facilities on site.

All the staff we encountered went out of their way to be helpful and if there was a query they dealt with it promptly. The meals were excellent, a choice between buffet service and table service, with a different menu, being available every day.

If you just wanted a relaxing holiday where you never left the hotel complex, this is the place to be.

However, we like to explore and therefore encountered some drawbacks. Nobody told us before we went that Madeira at the moment is a building site, with every little harbour and village along the coast being reconstructed to make new breakwaters and marinas, and major road works taking place to cope with the increase in tourists since the airport was upgraded in 2000. It will be lovely when it is finished!

My neighbour next door had a hearing problem which resulted in his TV volume being set to his satisfaction but not to mine. The walls permit noise to be transmitted quite easily and one could, for example hear his telephone ring and the light switch being operated.
On the first occasion, via Reception, he turned the volume down for a while, but then increased it.
The second evening, there being no answer from Reception, I rang him directly and received a favourable result. This was at 1.15am.
Two suggestions:
1) Put a limit on the maximum volume of the TV. (This is done in some hotels already)and/or
2) Offer earphones tyo plug into the TV. (Sockets are already in place on the set)
Advice: Lovely little town, but a good climb to get there by foot
Activities: A little cafe where they served "Chicken in the As(k)es" I think the k was meant to be an h!!
