The rudest hotel staff I have yet to come across anywhere. Three times I was shouted at, dictated to and told to go elsewhere if I didn't like it by different members of their staff. (receptionist, dining manager, barman) Customer service is non existent. Food was extremely... more

Just got back from a 2 week stay at the Santa Monica. We were a group of 2 mid 30’s, 2 pensioners, a pair of 19 year olds and a couple of kids 10 and 12 so quiet a spectrum. Having read all the reviews let’s just say I was a little worried before I got there, however I... more

Cheap and Cheerful
What a great holiday. Booked a cheap last minute deal so wasn't expecting a lot especially after reading some of the reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised. Hotel is quite old so looks a little shabby from outside, however the inside is fine. Rooms were pleasant and kept very clean, restaurant was the same with a good choice of food. Bar area was large and the entertainment staff worked very hard to entertain customers both in the bar and by the pool. The pool area was very crowded but kept very clean. All the staff were very pleasanr. Overall a very good value for money holiday.
loved it - brilliant - blantyre
Have just came back from a week at the Santa Monica, we had a brilliant time and would go back there in a minute (not many places can say that to). Having read previous reviews was a bit sceptical but now realise some people just like to moan. The hotel was basic but clean, great choices for dinner, staff were extremely friendly and some were Scottish, even more of a bonus, and the entertainment staff worked their socks off during the day and night. They made our holiday even more memorable. Calella itself is lovely and has a wide variety of shops and restaurants. You can take the train to the next resorts along the coast or 45 mins to Barcelona.
newcastle!! (Juicy Juicy Bye Bye!!)
i stayed at the santa monica hotel from 24th June for two weeks. i really enojyed my stay here, i couldnt fault the hotel or their staff! the pool was a reasonable size, and there were plenty of sun loungers situated around the pool. the pool side snack bar sold a wide variety of food and drinks, and served until 9pm! pizzas were available uptil 12.30am! rooms in the hotel were spotless! cleaned every day and clean towels and bed sheets were changed daily. i will agree that the walls of the hotel are very very think and everything can be heard, this didnt casue too much of a problem for us. the beach was only a few minutes walk away, and there are shops, bars, restaurnats and clubs situaed a few minutes walk from the hotel. the entertainment staff of the hotel were very friendly and kept the guests entertained day and night. we were only bed and breakfast, we didnt eat our breakfast there much and prefered to go out for a full english breakfast but we did pay to eat in the hotel on an evening on two occcasions and there was a good choice of food to choose from! i enojyed my holiday here and would defintly go back!!!
good but get a safety dep box
Enjoyed stay at hotel ,clean and for what we paid could not complain.I would stress that my bank card and money were stolen from out of the room, without forced entry. Please be vigilant and make that you get a safety deposit box .
Nice enough
I had a lovely holiday in this resort. I read several reviews on this hotel and was very unsure of staying in this hotel but i was glad i did. This is a lovely hotel with friendly staff and an ideal base for staying in the resort. The food was fresh and there was at least 5 different chioces on main courses each night which were never repeated in the full 7 days we stayed. there were plenty of high chairs for babies which we all cleaned. we never waited longer than a couple of minutes to be seated on a night or breakfast. The pool at first glance seems small but is probably one of the largest within the resort and is cleaned throughly everynight. The hotel itself looks a little dated which did put me off at first glance but as the rep assured me it grew on me. The rooms were spotless and kept that way with fresh bedding and towels every day. they cleaned the whole hotel inside and out daily. The enterainment was different every night and there was something for everyone. they try and cater for every taste. The bar was always well stocked with a wide varity of english drinks. there are plenty of games to keep younger childern entertained and the internet for older children. there is a large no smoking area for non smokers and outside seats for people who do not wish to be in the noise or with smaller babies. The hotel is located very near the beach which makes it easy to go back and forth too and also has a spar and fruit shop over the road which enables you to pick up goods. The hotel does stock daily newspapers and water in the lobby which was handy too. the reps were on site everyday able to answer any questions we had. There are some draw backs that did put me off the Santa Monica and making a return trip. We were on the 4th floor and with a 11 month old baby and a push chair we did wait a long time for lifts sometimes. the walls in the hotel are very very very thin and was often kept awake with the noise from the other rooms next to us. The hotel is also situated next to a main road which is very busy and noisy at times. The pool is very crowed and is not easy to get into. I would say overall it was a nice hotel but i would not stay again but only down to the walls being so thin i hardley slept everything else was nice about it.
Not too bad.
We stayed at the Santa Monica for 10 nights half board , starting on the 26/5/07. We were on the 5th floor. The room itself was great although basic. TV with Sky News and plenty of English channels. The shower and taps were A1 with instant hot water / power. We were positioned on a corner balcony. Our main view was over a car park looking towards more hotels. Not the prettyiest view but so what. Our side view looked over the main pool and towards the sea which is a 2 minute walk away. There is a hotel next to the Santa Monica which closed over a year ago. Most of the front facing upper floors of the Santa Monica will have a view of this hotel and its filthy pool. A bit of an eye sore but you just have to ignore it. I found the entertainment at the hotel very slow and laboured and it all seemed to start too late for the kids. Not a great deal of talent from any of the reps either. They did the same 3 dances every night and everything seemed a bit repetitive. A few of the audience participation games were cringe worthy. There was also a naff parrot show. The parrots came out on stage at 9pm but the hosts were more interested in going around the room taking photos in a clear money making exercise. 45 minutes later the show would start. The parrots couldn't even speak. The food i thought was great for the 3* billing of the hotel. As much as you wanted and when one dish ran out it would soon be replaced by another. The dining area was pleasant and overlooked the pool. The pool itself is relatively small but this is no problem if you have kids to keep an eye on. There were plenty of sunbeds to go around the pool. When i was there the hotel was fitted out with security cameras on every floor which hopefully should stop any problems with thieving that have been mentioned by other travellers. I personally was not aware of any room thefts although the reps do inform you on your welcome meeting to beware. Always double lock your rooms. The reps were able to provide a number of day trips to go on, the highlight of which would appear to be Barcelona. Quite expensive though. There are numerous cheaper places to book from near the hotel. The cheapest of all though would be taking the train to Barcelona which is a fantstic coastal route. Dirt cheap as well. Just over 6 euros for a return fare. The journey is 1hr there and the station in Barca that most people chose to get off from is Placa Cataluna which is just across the road from La Ramblas. The station in Calella is a good 10 minute walk away although there is a regular trolley bus service from outside the hotel. Calella itself is a very busy resort. There are lots of shops / bars / restaurants within easy walking distance. Overall i really enjoyed my stay at the hotel. For what we payed it was money well spent. If you want more class then go 4* and pay through the nose Juicy Juicy Bye Bye.
We liked it
We stayed 11 nights (returned 2 june 2007) at the santa monica and had a great time. Nothing ever went missing from our room infact the cleaner must of found a 10 euro note that i dropped as it was placed on the bed when we returned. We did hire a safety deposit box tho. The food was very good and quite varied altho its true that the restaurant staff arent very friendly, the bar and reception staff were very friendly and helpful. There was in house entertainment day and night for kids and plenty of shops about within a short walk. The view from the room was not great but had lots of sun on the balcony in the mornings, we didnt mind as we only used the room for sleeping in, the room itself was fine and kept very clean and the shower was great. For us the only downside was that someones kids kept pressing all the buttons on the 2 lifts so sometimes there was a long wait and we were on the 7th floor (8 floors altogether).
Room Robberies
BEWARE!!!! Anyone planning a holiday at the Santa Monica please be extra vigilant. We have just returned form the hotel and were one of three couples whose rooms were entered and money stolen. All the rooms were entered by someone with a pass key as there was no evidence of forced entry. Hotel Management and Reps are playing it down - but from talking to waitress at the hotel this has been happening since March. -JUST BE CAREFUL!!!!
loved it!
enjoyed my stay here. food was very good, chips every night! entertainment was good, didnt have to leave the hotel. perhaps the reps could of been a bit more helpful. the staff were excellent with kids. i'd go back there!
Pleasant Well Maintained Hotel
Hotel well located near to the main tourist area set back a couple of blocks from the sea. Rooms recently renovated and comfortable. Rooms to the front have a partial sea view (and a sunny balcony), those at the back view inland and do not get much (if any)sun. I only had breakfast in the hotel. This offered a typical menu of a Spanish Holiday Hotel the quality of which was a little above average in quality. Reception was very helpful and gave good local information. The main drawback is that the Hotel is situated some 1 mile from the local railway station ( a level walk). There one can get frequent trains to Barcelona (about 1hr20min journey).
