Electra Palace Hotel Reviews
" hot "
Submitted By: watch9876the hotel is right under the flight path, therefore every plane landing into the airport will be heard day and night. the earlist plane i heard coming in in the moring was at 3:30 and the last one coming in for the night was at around 11pm.
rhodes is a very hot island. it is nice when you are in a bikini lying in the sun but not if you are having a day trip around the island. it is definitely well in the 40's in the summer.
the pool is good, average to big so never overcrowded although the shallow end is around 1.3 m so not good for children
the beach is very shingly and pebbley, no sand, the sea does get very deep very quickly however if you swim out far enough you will be able to stand up agian and touch pure golden sand. very wierd. but it is good for skimming stones.
there is an kids club for the under 12's with only 2 entertainers, astrid and bjorn. they are good at their job but there does need to be some more activities as there was only yoga, darts, water polo, and beach volleyball. night enterainment was the worst i have ever seen, either people signing beatles or abba songs or a traditional greek dance night or the animation team (boys dressing up as girls) or instruments being played
the food is not that good. each night is a selection of food from around the world. so if you don't like chinese etc there is not a lot to choose from on that night. you can choose a selection of drinks for the meal depending on time of meal (beer, red or white wine, juices, coffee or tea, or fizzy, or water
definitely book a suite. it will cost more but there is so much more room and you can separate the room into 2 rooms with a sliding door, so good is someone snores. there is a dvd player in the room so bring some along. you can also hire one from reception for 5 euros. there is a fridge in the room with a once only fill up of free drinks. but there is a kettle and coffee tea sugar etc that is refilled every day
a lot of old wrinkly french people came who push in front of you and are very loud and they also take up a whole lounge by playing cards every evening. they really do dress up for every meal with loads of make up and jewellery (mutton dressed as lamb). not a nice sight
reception staff are helpful and there is 2 bell boys that will take up and bring down suitcases
there is no lifeguard
there are interent access points that cost 4.50 for 1/2 hour.
there are lots of stray cats and dogs. we once saw a dog sitting in the pool. lol
Good for: Beach

" Plane spotters paradise "
Submitted By: Paraphor123The hotel is clean and the twin rooms are small, but reasonably furnished. Our balcony unfortunately did not catch the sun, but looked out to sea so had a lovely view. The mini bar in our room was re-stocked everyday and the room had tea and coffee making facilities. Toiletries were provided in the bathroom, but the hairdryer was very weak. A small supermarket is by the pool and one just outside the hotel entrance along with a bar, but nothing else. There is a small pebble beach, and the sea during our stay was wild and rough.
We have stayed in many 4 and 5 star all inclusive hotels and the Electra Palace is at best a good 3 star. The food is no more than 3 star average, plenty of quantity, but no quality. All meats and fish on the buffet are covered in sauce which quickly forms a skin on top. However, there is a grill that has a “special” of the day meat or fish that is sauce free. The food is pre-cooked and stacked in large hostess trolley type cupboards, so the food is only warm and veg watery by the time it is put out on the buffet. The chips (every meal) seemed to be the only dish cooked fresh and served straight from the kitchen. My daughter is vegetarian and the choice for her was poor. The toaster at breakfast was the best I have come across, very efficient. All the staff work incredibly hard and long hours, but on the whole remain cheerful, always a smile or hello. Please be aware that even, if like in our brochure description, it states WiFi is included in the all inclusive package, it is not and costs 50 euros for 7 days. The pool (freshwater) area is quite pleasant, sun beds, the cheap plastic mesh type, are not all that comfortable and to get a good spot, towels out by 7-45!
The entertainment was by far the worst we have come across. The brochure description was I quote “Highly recommended for families keen to enjoy an action-packed stay”. This was not the case. Daytime entertainment was virtually non existent. During our stay – high season, water polo was offered 3 times, a yoga and dance class once. Hardly action packed. There is a kids club for the under 12’s which was not appropriate to us, but seemed to be enjoyed by those who used it. The evening entertainment was not much better. One evening it was watchable, an Abba tribute band who were quite good, one evening a quiz which was OK and the rest of the evenings were locals singing?! ranging in age from middle age to an OAP playing keyboard and guitars. I agree with the Peter Kay comments! We met some lovely people at the hotel, which we renamed Dull Palace. One word in summary for the entertainment, atrocious.
As said before in previous reviews the hotel is on the flight path for the final approach to Rhodes airport. The noise is horrendous and cannot be ignored even inside with closed doors. The flights are day and night, although reduced in number during the night. Be prepared to be woken up every time a plane passes over the hotel. On the busy days I counted (sad I know!) 13 flights before lunch! Then gave up. Afternoon naps by the pool if desired, impossible. You can even hear the engines go into reverse thrust if the wind is in the right direction!
We took a taxi to Rhodes Town which is well worth a visit. Lots of the usual tourist shops selling tacky souvenirs, but it is a lovely old cobbled town with a harbour. There is a marina towards the newer part of Rhodes Town. If you venture as far as the marina, just set back under the trees by a small market is an animal welfare charity collecting any euros you can spare between about 11 and 2. They rely on donations to help the sick and abused animals of Rhodes, and are very grateful for donations. We had a nice chat with one of the ladies who helps run the charity and they are doing a wonderful job on very limited resources.
If you enjoy quality food, quality entertainment in a quality location, this hotel is not for you.

Submitted By: takeofftimThe food is lovely (something different every night). The pool is immaculate, rooms are cleaned daily these include mini bar which is free and restocked daily, kettle and tea making facilities.
Go for a room with a sea view as view is great watching the ships go by.
Down side is hotel is right on flight path so you do get aircraft noise, which didn’t bother us as I am an aircraft buff but it could cause some problems.
Also hotel not really geared for kids. Kids club is a bit hit and miss and really aimed at Belgian and Italians even though one of the clubs minders is English.
Do not book this hotel if you’re looking for bingo and karaoke & games it’s not that sort of place.
Hotel is right on the beach which is pebbly and not really for kids; however there are plenty of beds on the beach and by the pool (no commando raids required at 5 am to put towels out.
Would we go again?
Absolutely but not with nipper in tow, this hotel is definitely only for couples who want a relaxing week or two.

Submitted By: Mr T MooreOnly thing hotel lacked was entertainment as it was just gearing up for the season so only had something on for 3 nights. But don't worry as across the street you have the Rainbow bar which is friendly (Sagis is the owner). Give him an old football shirt and you are friends for life. If you want the usual gift shops and bars these are only 5 mins walk along beach to the left, again friendly.
Do not go to this hotel if you don't like the sound of aircraft as it is right on the main flightpath. But not to noisy with new aircraft engine design making them fairly quiet (didn't bother me as I am an aircraft nut). Go for room with sea view its a must. Overall fantastic holiday, liked it so much going again in September.

Submitted By: Mr Jon The BearEverything about the hotel is good. It is on the beach the food is amazing and the Hotel staff are really nice and friendly. We stayed all inclusive and there aren't any restrictions, you can have as many drinks as you like where you can drink them on the beach or poolside or in one of the many bars.
The rooms looked like they had been recently refurbished and were spotlessly clean and changed every day by the maids.
Also at the hotel are two other restaurants called the Italian flair and the Chinese corner, you have to book these through the restaurant manager, and these are also very nice.
We booked a transfer from the airport to pick us up but there isn't much point as the airport is only 5 mins in a cab. A taxi into Rhodes old town is 10 Euros which is well worth a visit as it has some good shops and a nice atmosphere.
The only downside if any is that the hotel is not really in walking distance of other bars restaurants etc, but as the taxi's are so cheap it doesn't matter that much.
Really recommend this hotel can't believe people have written bad reviews.

Submitted By: Mrs R BevanIt is a very welcoming hotel with the food being of very high standards, the staff friendly rooms clean, beach a bit disappointing but all in all a very enjoyable holiday.
Children’s entertainment good. The town of Rhodes is well worth a visit! Also a short walk along the beach brings you to a town with quite a few shops bars and restaurants and this is where you will also find hair braiding tattoo etc.

Submitted By: Mr R WillisOn the plus side:
The hotel was immaculately clean - despite the Italians doing their best to leave fag-ends and glasses everywhere. The gardens and pool were very well maintained. The food was excellent. It was a little bland at times, but then I guess it has to cater for all ages and palates. Local wine and beer was on tap at all mealtimes. There is an a-la-carte restaurant which has to be booked. The wine has to be paid for and costs roughly 18 euros a bottle. The food was that good in the main restaurant that we didn't bother!
The hotel is right next to the beach. Sea-view rooms are a must with a variety of freight, cruise-liners and private yachts to watch sail past with a brandy or two on the balcony. Daytime entertainment was provided by a five-strong, young sports/entertainment team from Belgium. Archery, ping-pong, darts, aqua aerobics, water-polo, volleyball, football were all provided. All done in a light-hearted manner with no pressure to join in if you didn't want. A variety of nationalities were present. It is certainly not an all Brit hotel which was refreshing. We were really upset when the Italians left. They provided extra entertainment for us all - posing by the pool in this seasons Armani.
The women could not go in the pool because they would sink with all the bling on. Everybody else turned up to breakfast wearing shorts and T shirts. Not the Italians!. They turned up for breakfast, standing in the doorway for a few seconds for everyone to get a look at them, dressed ready to go clubbing! Even the staff found them to be hilarious. I said to one bar-man "what the **** have they come as?" and he burst into laughter. Anyway, enough about the free-entertainment, sorry, the Italians. The Kids club was excellent. My little boy loved it. He was kept busy all day which is difficult as he has the attention span of a fish. He cried when we had to go home, the first time ever.
Night-time entertainment was a mix of 'professional acts' (singers/dancers/groups) and slap-stick, Chaplinesque acts performed by the same 5 strong Belgian troop that did the day-time stuff. It was OK if you like Benny Hill. The Germans loved it! There were the usual kids disco early doors also run by the ever-present and extremely hard-working entertainers. Trianda, the local town, is only a 5 minute walk away which is full of bars, restaurants and supermarkets. Rhodes town is only a 15 minute bus ride away. 1.9 euros each way. A cracking little town with old and new, tatt and designer goods, and a working harbour with millionaire yachts to drool over.
On the minus side (nothing major - just niggly things to be fair):
Our room was a little shabby, but had air con, TV, a nice bathroom. The hotel is being refurbished. Some rooms are brand-spanking, others are clearly on the 'to-do' list. There are no provisions for tea or coffee nor any cooking facitlies. Again, all-inclusive is a must. The pool does not have a shallow end. The shallowest depth was about 1.3 metres. Parents really had to keep an eye on beginner swimmers. There is a little kids pool for non-swimmers, nicely located next to the Kids clubhouse.
Occasionally the wine at mealtimes was watered-down. No-probs, just help yourself to a beer instead! The night staff at reception were quite rude and abrupt. I guess that's why they are put on the night shift - to meet as few paying guests as possible. I nearly had a toe-to toe with one of the night staff, he was that unhelpful. At this, I would like to point out that ALL the day staff were excellent and very helpful. The beach is pretty naff. Great for skimming stones though. You are right on the flight-path into Rhodes. If you are on the top floor, don’t leave your light on; You will be sharing your bed with a jumbo. Anyway, enough about the wife! (Only joking dear). Plane noise can be a problem. Night entertainment can be drowned out and late afternoon kips by the pool can be rudely interrupted. On the plus side it was interesting to see what sunglasses the pilots were wearing.
And that's all folks!
Would I go back here again? Er, yes. We had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday with more '+'s than '-'s. My son roared like a girl when we had to come home. My wife now is now suffering from PHD (post holiday depression). Will we race to the travel agents to book here for next year? Er, no. We have had better 4 star experiences e.g. Candia Park in Crete.
I hope that this provides you with some useful non-brochure insights. Thanks for reading.

Submitted By: Mr B BedfordReception:
Very basic information given by a receptionist coping alone.
Receptionist refused to contact flight operator for us to confirm return flight times as operator was based on Crete and the call was regarded as long distance (told to call from our room and charged).
Rooms:
Basic for alleged quality, no kettle tea or coffee in rooms, soap only in the bathroom (towels changed daily and beds made).Aircon less than adequate for time of year and temperatures experienced, no pool or beach towels provided, deposit safe to pay for. TV had 15 channels with only 1 found in English.
Meals:
All meals in same dining room. Breakfast was same choice every day. Evening meals had poor choice, no wine waiter service (all drinks are self service for AI). Table clearance was poor and carried out by staff that seemed poorly trained and reluctant to smile or hold a conversation. Dress code for evening meal was relaxed to shorts and vests. Groups of noisy youths allowed to sit together without any parental control (seems systematic with most hotels offering AI) Packed lunch included cold vegetables, dry bread and no drinks.
Bars:
Drinks were limited to two, so wife or daughter had to accompany to bar, no waiter service for AI guests nor were trays allowed to carry the drinks the 75m to the entertainments area. Coffee available from vending machines as was cold water. No bar menu’s, therefore no cocktails for the ladies.
Pool:
Did not see any cleaning during our stay, constant tide mark around raised island area and water became very murky by mid afternoon. Pool unsupervised at all times; therefore 'no diving' notices ignored by all. No pool service, all self-service. I and one of my grandsons came home with acute ear infection caused (our Dr said) by dirty water.
Entertainment:
Quite usual for what you would expect around a pool during the day, but not 4star quality on an evening, kids disco was same every night. 1 Theme night out of 10 was 3 Greek chaps singing local songs, no dancing or seemingly getting guests involved.
Summary:
This place needs a lot of improvement to meet the quality described in the brochures. Family had looked forward to holiday and felt let down by poor standards compared to other hotels we have experienced and enjoyed in other resorts.
Would not be tempted back to this hotel, Had we not got out and about, the holiday would have been totally spoiled, hope my comments help others in deciding, but will go back to Rhodes
" Hotel very clean and rooms good size,... "
Submitted By: Mr P SchofieldStaff very pleasant . Food was excellent and hot (except salads) always a good variety and barely repeated in the week. Always able to get a table and never a big queue to get food. Queues were never very long for the bar either.
Very good pool area plenty of sun beds and brollies to go round so no need for early rise to save one. Entertainment average on every night with guest entertainer on one night.
Beach mainly grit sand and pebbles so no need for a bucket and spade.
A few bars and tavernas out side the hotel with a small village with bars and shops just 3 minutes walk on the beach.
Small downside the hotel although being just 15 minutes from the airport is the direct flight path for the airport, but you get used to it and is not very off-putting.
Rhodes town is only a short bus ride and is well worth a visit.

Submitted By: Miss L GrenhouseThe hotel is right on the beach which is lovely and quit and not overcrowded and there is a lovely wind all day. What makes the holiday for us is the rainbow bar which is directly outside the Electra palace and the owner Segis (Alister McGowan) he is great and his cocktails are ace, you even get free ones thrown in.
There is a small quite town 5minutes walk away which has plenty of bars restaurants clothes and gift shops etc.
I recommend this hotel to everyone and am going back again this year.
" Rooms: No frills but almost... "
Submitted By: Mr C GriffithsBeach: Not up to much. Not very wide, mainly pebbles and shingle, no water sports, becomes deep quite quickly and fairly windy (in fact the whole resort is quite windy). Euro three for a sun-bed. Tip - a blow-up plastic bed costs Euro 4 in the shop - if you want to use the beach, it is perhaps cheaper to buy one of these. The sea seemed generally not very calm. Apart from the pebbles, there are apparently quite a few sea urchins - so wear shoes. Even on the East side of the island (where there is less wind and the beaches are better, the beaches are still not great)
Food: Adequate, plenty of it and plenty to choose from but it looks better than it tastes. Sometimes overcooked, sometimes dry, often bland. Always salads so one could have a very healthy if somewhat boring diet. They were never short of chips. Food is also provided outside mealtimes near the bar so you need never go hungry. All meals buffet style. the restaurant is pleasant enough but try to avoid peak meal times. Essentially it is a glorified cafeteria.
Drinks: No problem in getting drinks which are well served (afternoon tea is in plastic cups) but the red wine is awful and the mixers, cola and the like are not the best. The drinks are all locally produced, no premium brands - basically the cheapest of everything but it will not poison you. The beer is fine if you can drink continental style lager and is not watered down as someone suggested.
Entertainment: Probably good for kids but nothing much professional - Greek night involved three musicians and some dancers but apart from that it was mainly home-grown. (E.g. five ladies on stage, race to come back to stage having found a shoe, a bracelet, a bra and a couple of other objects). Exercises in morning, games in the swimming pool etc.
Location: The hotel is on the beach in quite nice grounds - so some rooms must have nice sea views - we had a pool view. It has a large modern pool. Lots of loungers although the English seem to make a point of grabbing loungers near the pool at 8.00 in the morning (not a German problem at this hotel unless the Germans have started reading the Daily Star and the Daily Mail). No towels provided. Not far to Rhodes Town which is worth a visit (half hourly bus service from the main road, costs Euro 1.60). There are a few bars close to the hotel. We never got to Trianda itself but I think it is within a 15 minute walk. About four kms (10 Euro taxi ride - fixed fares) from airport. For the price, I would catch a taxi to the hotel rather than messing around with a coach transfer. Hotel is under flight path but no-one seemed to find it a problem.
Car Hire: Would recommend it. We paid Euro 90 for a small car - rather beaten up but perfectly adequate for 4 1/2 days
Thousands of car rental places but we used Galaxy who were the cheapest of five quotes and provided an excellent service.
General: Costs Euro 50 for a late checkout to 6.00 pm. Some of the staff are quite rude but most are helpful and friendly. The hotel is clean and rooms were cleaned daily. Just don’t expect too much - it is not a five star de-luxe hotel and does not pretend to be although in my view, it could be better at what it does. Guests, when we were there, were mainly English with a large German contingent and with smaller Italian, French and Dutch groups. The best hotel positions seem to be on the other side of the island and if the hotel had a nice beach, we would perhaps be more forgiving of some of the other shortcomings - I guess it depends what you want. Everyone is different and clearly some people love the place. Would we go back? No. Not because anything was bad - we just didn’t think anything was great. Basically, you get what you pay for - we paid £395 for the week so I cannot complain. I should add as a postscript that I lived in Europe for 12 years and I have been travelling as part of my work for more than 25 years so I hope I am being objective and I hope readers find this helpful.
" Just returned from this hotel and I... "
Submitted By: Mrs E LloydThe staff will go out of their way to help you and are full of advice of places to visit and best way to go. The hotel is spotlessly clean and towels are changed daily.
The pool is wonderful and very large, considering we were there at the height of the season it was big enough never to seem crowded.
The food was excellent with many choices so if you are particular and only like English food you will be as surprised as I to find English roast beef and mash potatoes on one of the evenings. Even if you miss meal times there is food always available in the pool bar.
The hotel is near enough to take a taxi (8-10euro) to Rhodes town which is a must place to visit.
For those liking a late night drink there is a great cafe bar opposite the hotel (rainbow) which has a great atmosphere and serves until 4am.
I was told of air noise as hotel is near airport, but we never had any disturbance from planes.
If I had to pick a fault with this hotel it would be the evening entertainment is not too brilliant but was definitely geared towards the children.
The beach is good (a few shingles) and with the constant breeze and perfect sunshine you will never feel uncomfortable.
I would definitely return in the future.

They have to feed 700 people 3 times a day. If you want a 5 star "a la carte" menu go to the Ritz or the Hilton and pay £250 per night but don't expect Gordon Ramsay Michelin star food on holiday. They do a very passable job given the constraints they work under. If you have kids who are fussy eaters take them to McDonalds not a Greek hotel where, surprise surprise, they serve Greek food.
The rooms are very clean - If you think they are too small either close your eyes and go to sleep or get out and enjoy your holiday – You didn’t go abroad to spend your time in your room.
Yes the hotel is under the flight path but it's the arrivals that come over the hotel and they aren't so noisy when they are landing. – The transfer coaches stopping at the hotel all day make more noise but no one seems to mind them.
If there was one disappointment for me it's the beach – No sand – Buy a pair of rubber shoes for 5 euros and enjoy swimming in the warm Aegean – That's what I did.
Stop moaning and enjoy this hotel for what it is – A good quality holiday hotel in the sun
