Good value for money

We have stayed at this Hotel twice - once in 2009 and once this summer 2011. The hotel serves good food three times a day, although selection is limited. Rooms were very clean both visits, fresh linen and towels daily. The hotel's poor entertainment in the evening lets it down. Although all inclusive we spent a few evenings elsewhere for something to do. Hotel is showing definite signs of wear and tear, could do with a refurb. Overall, good value for the money we paid, staff also very friendly and helpful, same on both visits. If you want a luxury hotel pay more and go elsewhere as this is not it.

  • Advice: Enjoy the resort, also be courteous to staff, as they cannot do enough for you if you are polite to them.

my wife and i stayed at the olympic for three nights. firt impressions, bus pulls up to a huge hotel with seven floors.
the reception staff very welcoming as were the bar staff and cleaning staff. the room was a typical 3star room. a bit damp but you only sleep there.we were on the sixth floor which was not a problem as there were 3 lifts which all worked fine.the hotel has four pools which were all decent sizes. but it wasnt until the second day we realised to use the pools infront of the hotel as you get more sun time.all inc system good even though you are only allowed one drink at a time which was ok. the food,, hmmmm well mon and tues ok then its asif you were getting left overs from night before with a few extras. do you enjoy pigs trotters?.. veal was liver but nice. we only went out to eat once to "alcatraz" english bar. very friendly and good food. we may not go to the olympic again but there are other H.TOP hotels we will try.. all in all a good holiday with plenty of sun. Room For Improvement To Be Olympic Standard
5 / 10
Aug 2011, mandamoo73

Our holiday to Calella was an All Inclusive Special,so we had no idea where we would be going. When told the Hotel Olympic was our destination,we felt optimistic as we had seen it in the brochure. This is my view on our time there.
Hotel Room:The worst part of the hotel without a doubt.Very shabby and dated, and my bathroom had an awful smell that wouldn't shift.I also had to kill 5 bluebottles the first evening.Other members in my party had ants in their rooms.Pillows had a sweaty smell about them, and some of the bedding had cigarette burns in it.The rooms do get cleaned daily and towels are replaced but sadly doesn't make much difference.
Swimming Pools:The hotel has 2 small pools at the front of the hotel and a large one with childrens pool at the back.I didn't use the front ones, but the back one was ok,seemed clean, could do with a bit of updating though.A word of warning-inflatables,balls,diving are all not allowed in there(although it did get broken a few times). You have to get down there pretty early for a sun lounger but we didn't have much problem.
Food:A bit repetitive and recycled(breakfast became part of the morning snack etc) but generally edible.I was told that the food here was more varied than the average.I have to admit though that i got heartily sick of seeing the same thing.
All Inclusive Package:A bit of a con really. You have a photocard that you must show every meal and every time you go to the bar.You can only get one drink per card, and the queues are pretty bad at the bar. There are only specified drinks you can have, and as for getting drunk, forget it,as the drinks are not exactly full strength.Children can have ice cream and ice pops but again only one at a time. When having your meals in the restaurant you have to get it from a very small bar with one bar person.
Entertainment:We only saw one evenings entertainment as we didn't stay in the bar.It was geared more towards the children, but if you don't mind hearing Black Lace songs and the like its lighthearted fun.
Staff:I had no problems with the staff.I found the staff polite. The animation staff were good with the children and kept them entertained.
Other holidaymakers:The other bugbear of the holiday. As in any hotel in high season you expect a bit of noise, but having hoards of teenagers on the 1st floor where families were staying is asking for trouble. Our party had a 15 year old,a 13 year old, three 8 year olds and a 19 month old,who didn't get a lot of sleep due to teenagers running up and down the corridor, shouting, throwing things-all early hours of the morning. Not what you want on a family holiday.
Last but not least,I am going to give a mention to the lifts.A total no-go with luggage and a pushchair. One lift covers the main foyer and it only holds 10 people, thats if you can get to it with all the teenagers pushing you out of the way. There are another two that serve the restaurant but these take 4 people. There is no lift to the swimming pools.
I think the H Top Olympic needs to bring itself up to 3 star standard.I didn't let it spoil my holiday but I wouldn't use it again unless improvements were made.It is a pity as the public areas of the hotel are quite decent but the staff seem to be on a losing battle with it.On a plus side,it is better than the Hotel Planamar in Malgrat.

this hotel is not in my opin ion a 3 star in fact i would go so far as to say if it had 1 star that would be pushing it. we were a family of four staying there we had 2 beds and 2 camp beds pushed into 1 room there was no room for the bedside tables and they were stacked in a corner. the all inclusive card system is a disaster you are only allowed to get 1 drinks on an adult card and 1 on a childs with a maximum of 2 which meant every time we wanted drinks 3 of us had to queue and even on a busy night there was only 1 bartender. during our stay the ambulance was in attendance every day. food was repetitive. I would give it its one star as it was really clean.

True, the walls are paper thin, you could hear a wasp fart next door and the people upstairs returning at circa 3am sound as if they're doing a clog dance.
I went with my 8 year old son and we had a good time. Would definately go again.

  • Advice: Use the pools at the front of the Hotel rather that the year.

Sorry to say we've not long been back from a honeymoon from hell at this hotel. It is full of students all year round, they run up and down the corridor all night. pile into the only lifts working while we're trying to get down to dinner with a buggy. It's not a Family Hotel as advertised. There are stairs to every pool (which is diffucult if your child is in a buggy) and stairs down to the dining hall. There were only two lifts in this huge hotel that actually went to the dining hall but most of the time one lift wasn't working and the other crammed with students whose legs obviously don't work!!
Rooms were cleaned daily but fag burns in sheets, holes in curtains, broken furniture, even the baby's cot was held together with tape! Air con had s strong smell of diesel so we got headaches. Food was the same all the time and cold. We were told to heat it up in the microwave!! The last 5 days of the holiday we couldn't eat another thing in the hotel! Things were thrown off the balconies by the students, ie bottle tops and lit cigarettes, narrowingly missing myself and my daughter in the pool! There is so much wrong with this hotel that I cannot possibly list it all.....needless to say the 'locals' know the hotel as 'Beirut'!! do I need to say anymore!!!!!!

Just returned from an all inclusive holiday at the Olympic in Calella. Not brilliant but value for money. Food ok, Rooms cleaned daily and location from beach acceptable. Main negatives ...distance from Barcelona airport (Taxi fare 100/120 EUROS each way)..Pre booked Coach transfer waits for other flights at night (we arrived at 11.00pm and left airport around 1.30am) arriving at the Olympic at 2.45am.. located next to the Oxygen (O2) night club ! Beware,if you are returning to the uk on an evening flight and want to keep your room on for a few more hours (i.e beyond the 10.00am vacation) it will cost you 30 EUROS!

didnt pay much so didnt expect a palace, was pleasently pleased though.yes they have students and germans and french, and it could do with modernising but it was clean and tidy in a good state of repair.towels and rooms cleaned daily, plenty of varied food and lots of it.day and night entertainment close to shops and 5 mins to beach.free coach to any htop group hotel where you can have lunch and enjoy their facillites, train stops outside hotel and goes to beach or all round calella.all in all a 2 week inclusive hol for just over a thousand,if your not too picky and on a budget this is ideal.

Youth Hostel - Yes, but perfect for my holiday

I have only just returned from a holiday in Calella at this hotel, where I felt it was perfect for the holiday I expected. Although basic, I feel this hotel does not deserve the amount or degree of grief other people have unleased unto it.
I feel that it is unfair that this hotel is only seen from a 'middle-aged-parenting' viewpoint, where, in all fairness, this hotel would be seen as a shambles. However, being a teenager, I felt this hotel had no serious problems. The food was ok - full english in the mornings, which was perfect hangover good and chips in the evenings, which in all fairness, is very popular with younger travellers.
Admittedly, the walls of the rooms were paper thin and it was noisy, but if you are going to this hotel on a trip or if you're under the age of 25, I doubt you will dislike this hotel or have any problems with these minor issues.
Also, It is very close to the beach, a stone throw away from the clubs, and a minutes jog away from McDonalds. Not that I would know of course...
All in all, perfect for partying, hell for family holidays.

  • Advice: The pool in the back - ideal for a swim after a long day at the beach
