The hotel is generally nice and very clean. The air conditioning in the bedrooms is good, but found we were too cold early hours of the morning so kept having to get up and turn it off! The maid service is very good, rooms were cleaned everyday, towels changed and beds made.
We found the staff to be particularly rude, especially the bar staff around the pool! All smiles and manners were ignored and by the end of the holiday we were very resentful towards them as they tended to make you feel rather irritated!
Entertainment is good, lots of activities for both adults and children, e.g aqua aerobics each morning, foam parties and football. Evening entertainment occasionally felt strained, but perhaps due to the lack of people wanting to join in, but the mini-disco was good for the children, and all ages seemed to enjoy it!
Although the pool is a decent size for the amount of people in the hotel there was still a mad rush in the morning to go and 'reserve' your sun bed, otherwise stranded to an edge, or up to beach, missing out on the drinks and snacks paid for within the cost of the holiday... Pool area becomes slippery when wet, so beware young children!
Meals were OK, tended to be the same sort of thing each day, and no suitable options for vegetarians/vegans, as 80% of the menu is different meats and fish... but they do supply a handy option of a 'packed-lunch' which needed to be ordered the previous night if you were to go out for the day.
Overall a good holiday would not return to that particular hotel, but beach good and generally a lovely area of Spain.

We had a choice whether to go to Hotel Esplai or Hotel Bon Repos without any doubt we had made the right choice because me and my family thoroughly enjoyed the holiday.
There were plenty of activities for the children to participate in as well as the adult activities. The Entertainment in the night was brilliant, our two reps Wendy and Wesley was brilliant with both children and adults and made our stay worthwhile.
However the food which was provided was not to our taste, you would have been able to put up with the food for a week but two weeks was to long for the food as the children never had much to choose from as all they ate was chips and toasties by the pool.
But other than that, that would have to be the best holiday in which me and my family have had in years.

To say we were staying in calella at the height of the season there were more bars and restaurants closed than open. The pool area in the hotel was no way big enough for the amount of people staying in the hotel and the sun loungers were all taken by 8:30 on a morning and the people kept their towels on them all day long even though they were not using them and nobody did anything about it even though there were notices up telling you not to.
The hotel was advertised as having 2 pools and 2 jacuzzis but the second pool was about the size of a bathtub and the second jacuzzi didn’t work and the gardens and greenery they boast about are a few trees and plants in pots around the pool.
For the first day of our holiday we were quite impressed with the food until we realised we were getting basically the same choice every day (hard potatoes and raw chips) and the Mediterranean supper we were supposed to get didn’t exist.
The hotel is supposed to have 2 bars but the main one didn’t open until 7:00 p.m. so if you wanted a drink sitting in the lounge during the day you couldn’t. The bar staff were very miserable and unfriendly and looked down their nose at you and when my son went to get a second drink of pop the barman told him off because he had already had one and if you asked for a coffee they gave you real dirty looks.
The entertainment in the place was a waste of time - it was as though because they had already got your money they didn’t want to keep you in the place eating and drinking their food so they made it as unfriendly and boring as possible so you would go out.
The rooms were the size of a matchbox and the air conditioning which was also supposed to be the heater only had one setting which was freezing. On top of all that we didn’t have a rep when we got there for some reason unknown to anybody so excursions were out of the question - not that their were any to go on stuck in such a dead hole.
Five of us went on the holiday and we all agreed that the best part of our holiday was arriving home again and it isn’t like we are fussy or hard to please. Anyone thinking of going to Calella and especially the Hotel Esplai would have more fun with a week in Bridlington.

The Ferris Coach hostess and driver was very rude, I am a pensioner and disabled but I still had to climb in ramp to load my own cases, plus the driver used swear words at me.
The hostess only liked welsh people, she was rude to English people. She never had many snacks, because she needed the room for a lot of cheap fags. The hotel was fine but the food was very greasy.
The man behind the pool bar never liked to give the all inclusive people the food they were entitled to, he was rude to everyone, the pool was not safe and there were no life guards.
A lot of teenagers about 16 to 20 years old from Germany, Italy, Netherlands were endangering young children and babies that were in the pool with their parents. I would never use Ferris Coach Holidays again.

Over all The Hotel was brilliant! The entertainment was the best for the kids the reps Wendy and Wesley were great with the kids and the kids loved them! However the food wasn’t as nice as we thought it was going to be.
My kids aren’t very big eaters and so it was important for there to be at least one selection for them to eat- but there wasn’t really. They were living on chips and I think eventually got fed up of them!
But the hotel Esplai was a very good holiday and I would love to go back again! It was for the reps which we loved the hotel so much because they were fantastic!

The hotel over all was great! They had a fabulous selection of foods for everyone, it is a very clean hotel with good entertainment at night and even in the day. They had things like aerobics and Spanish lessons. The only thing I wasn't happy about was the staff. Most of the staff were really moody but there were a few that were nice, especially the entertainers (reps).
The hotel is situated in a great place it’s about 3/4 min walk to the beach. The pool area was good as well there were plenty of sun beds and it wasn't crowded around the pool even though the hotel was fully booked.
I must say though there was hardly any English people there a lot of German and Dutch people. But that didn't spoil the holiday.
Overall the holiday was great I would definitely recommend it.

We have been to many different resorts in Spain as we have 4 children and need to find one that they enjoy as well as us, and the Esplai has been the best one so far.
The staff were very friendly. The rooms very clean and tidy and the entertainment was good. The receptionist even let my kids help behind the reception on our last day, they were putting the keys in the correct room number slots for her.
We would definitely go there again. one bar staff brought his son in to play with my little boy and another one had my youngest daughter sat on his drinks tray whilst balancing it on his hand I have photos of that.
It is a really friendly family holiday hotel.

We went towards the end of season and so the resort was quite quiet. Although the hotel Esplai was fully booked it wasn't full of young idiots. So we were able to enjoy ourselves.
The entertainment in the hotel was below average for the most part as it was run by Dutch students who didn't really have experience in entertainment. but give them credit they did try. Food was always good it had a great selection if you are just a burger and fries person the food isn't for you. There was always plenty of fresh salad a fruit. Breakfast was always good as you could have an omelette or pancake freshly made for you though the queue could get quite long.
The staff I found to be extremely hard working and had a tough time with some of the Brits. If you were talkative they were very friendly.
I would definitely go back to the hotel Espali probably not in peak season but off season again the weather is still good but you don’t get a load of English yobs.

My partner and myself went on a last minute holiday for the week. The accommodation was great, no complaints. The food was not too bad, but found it was the same thing most days.
The one thing I would say is that the bar staff need to go on a course!! We found because we were all inclusive, that when we went to the bar for a drink/snack, they served the 'paying' customers first.
They should remember that we have paid for our holiday and if the service was good then we would leave a tip. Other than the bar staff, we enjoyed the holiday and would possible think about going back.

What can I say. The rooms are really clean and in general I really can’t knock the hotel tidiness. However the bar staff are really moody and that tends to drag you down to the same mood. It’s hard to get a single smile out of them. By the end of the holiday you don’t even bother remembering your please’ and thank you’s to the bar staff as they are so rude.
If you get out of an evening the Beach boys club is a must Brian and the gang will be more than happy to entertain you all night

I’d echo the other comments; this is a well-run establishment, which provides clean, comfortable rooms.
Very good food (particularly on Fridays), friendly and helpful staff and a decent location not too far from a really beautiful beach. I would recommend the 10-minute walk to the beach as it is much less hectic than the pool area, but then drinks are free at the hotel!
Depends what you’re looking for, but in our opinion this was perfect for a beach holiday.

As echoed in previous reviews of this hotel, the food was terrible (yes pork every night, yes often cold!!) We discovered the reason for this was the hot plates we not working at the time we got there. All though apparently the hotel Owner David "Is looking for a long term solution to the problem of cold food?!" Meanwhile People continued to fall ill with what we began to call esplai belly.
If you could drag yourself out of your room (you had no choice with the maids coming into your room every morning with the lack of do not disturb signs!) also the PAPER thin walls - because the plaster has cracked off and been painted over so many times that all that remains are walls that you could hear everything through. And I mean everything going on in rooms around you, snoring, and walking, coughing and full conversations as if you were in the room with them!!
You could go down to the pool and be served a selection of watered down, poorly made drinks by some of the most miserable bar staff I have ever encountered in a hotel. Namely "Mustachio" being your one to look out for, even when you spoke in Spanish to the man he pretends not to understand you and gets you the wrong drink! Entertainment was ok a selection the usual Spanish Flamenco/Karaoke/Disco.
Our last words on the Esplai...Don’t Bother!
