Oasis Papagayo Village Reviews
" Well what can I say?...... I arrived... "
Submitted By: Mr M Prior
Well what can I say?...... I arrived back in England yesterday after spending a week at the Oasis Papagayo Village, and I’m desperate to book up again for next year.
Before I booked, I noticed that there were a couple of bad reviews on the place but decided to go for it, Which is what I would advise everyone to do thinking of going there.
Ok my review:
TRANSFERS
The transfer from the airport to the hotel went very smoothly. As soon as we were off the plane we were advised as the which coach to get on (fully air - conditioned) and whilst on the journey was given a talk from one of the Thomson reps as to what there is to do on the island.
HOTEL AND CLEANLINESS
When I arrived with my partner and 18 month old son I was amazed at how clean and pleasant the resort was. The staff working on reception and on the grounds were brilliant and very helpful. The rooms were cleaned everyday and (forget what it says in the brochure, our linen was changed everyday too.
THOMSON REPS
Unbelievable........ no matter what time of day/night, there was always one around to help you or keep the children amused (if you do decide to go look out for Roley Poly Schmolley - absolutely brilliant and the kids love him!). There was always something to do for both children and adults like water polo, football, tennis or quizzes by the pool side, and an evening kids club with the reps and a daily cabaret.
FACILITIES
Five swimming pools, (3 salt water 2 fresh water) football pitches, tennis courts etc. Four restaurants and an ice cream parlour on site. Food lovely, lots of choice and not too expensive. Always served with a smile as well. Bowling alley and public house as well as the club bar. Supermarket and perfume shop next door too. I also rented a car during my stay. The rep for the car company came to the resort and sorted the paperwork and gave me the car there and then.
THE TOWN
The resort is situated just down the road from the main town which has everything from bars to restaurants to shops. Great night life and not too rowdy - excellent for families.
There is also a brand new waterpark just outside the resort.
THE ISLAND over all
I agree with some of the other reviews which said that there were alot of cranes. But these were not an eyesore. The beaches were beautiful and clean the best I've ever seen. The local people absolutely love the children and always have a warm welcome for them.
It is called the quiet island and now I know why. If you are looking for peace and quiet but with fun for the kids this is the place to go. We have only been back five minutes and are already booking to go again next year.
10 out of 10 - well done Oasis Papagayo village and Thomson. Money well spent.............
The complex was large and our apartment was clean and tidy.
unfortunately the resort is still in its early stages of development and from our balcony we counted over 20 cranes(although the nearest was 500m away). The main swimming pool was salt water and there was lots of mould pieces off the side of the pool floating in the water where it had not been cleaned for some time.

The food in the buffet was pretty average with us complaining that the hot food was actually cold so we ended up going down the town. car hire was a disaster we could not get a car for hire anywhere although the Thompson brochure guaranteed that they could get us a car. best advice here pre-book before you travel.
The best beech was 2.5k down the road between the 2 only hotels in that area with clear water, no stones, weed, shale or anything other than pure sand, fantastic, a must do if you like the beach and rolling waves.
" What a wonderful place to go on... "

What a wonderful place to go on holiday I didn’t want to come home. I stayed at the Oasis Papagayo with my partner, we have no children so were a little apprehensive as we knew this was a family resort. However there were many things for us to do either lazing by the many beautiful pools joining in with quizzes and other pool activities or bowling and tennis.
There were loads of exclusions available to us such as Baku Water park, sailing to Lanzarote, trips to beaches around the island, murder mystery evenings and loads more.
The only drawback to this lovely hotel is the food. The restaurant on the complex was disgusting so we ventured into town for decent meals.
The walk into town and to the beach is about 15-20 mins but you can get a taxi for about 2 euros.
The weather was lovely very cloudy in the mornings but by lunchtime it was really hot. Some people while we were there were suffering from extensive burns so load yourselves up with sun cream.
The only thing I could moan about apart from the awful food was the rooms have no air conditioning which was horrible at night.

" This was a "super family" holiday... "
Submitted By: Mrs T Gallant
This was a "super family" holiday taken by myself, my husband and my 2 children 7 & 11(girl & boy), this complex is very large it has 3 different swimming pools so there is always sunbeds available no matter what time of day, however the choice of food is sparse, there are 2 restaurants on the site, which may sound good but the food is virtually all the same, expensive and with little variety, especially for the kids!! the staff in the restaurants however are great, very warm & friendly.
The grumble I had with this holiday is that "Thomson" should take into consideration that this is after all a "super family" complex, there is very little for the adults to do during the day and if, like we had, the weather is not hot and sunny enough to bathe all day us adults had absolutely zilch to do, there is a bowling alley but it doesn’t open until 7pm, so that was no help.
the entertainment rep we had at this resort was a saviour by a long way, he went out of his way (and sometimes in his own time) to keep the kids totally entertained and amused from day until night, a God send, for, if it was not for him the kids would have been as bored as us.
the cleanliness is below standard for a 4* hotel, on arrival our apartment was full of sand and the sofa which the children sleep on was disgusting, I wouldn’t let a dog sleep on that, they say the maid comes in every day but I think she only empties the bins, sheets are only changed once a week which in a hot sticky place is nowhere near often enough
The reps were good but "Thomson" failed us here I am afraid to say, they need to do a bit more homework.

" I have just returned from Corralejo... "
Submitted By: Mr D Lowe
I have just returned from Corralejo and I want to go back tomorrow. I stayed at the Oasis Papagayo and I would go back there in the blink of an eye.
The hotel complex is very large, but is very well catered for. The food provided by the hotel was dreadful, but we were self catering so that did not matter. (We tried the buffet for an evening meal one night and it was the worst food I had all week).
Very much like the last reviewer, I did not encounter more than 5 Germans at the hotel the whole week. The kids club is absolutely fantastic although they were a little short staffed, so could only take about 30 kids each day.
Apart from the food, the hotel is 10 out of 10. Five pools, 5 Bars, cheap supermarket and very friendly Thompson People.
The Rooms are huge and very clean, (Although they charge you for everything, from a Toaster to TV to an Oven) and the fact that the hotel is not near the beach is not a problem.
The hotel is a ten-minute walk from the beaches (10 Minutes with a three year old in tow, five on my own). The hotel are happy to call you cabs which turn up in minutes and cost about 2Euro to town.
The town is full of "English" bars and restraunts with frankfurters and "Chicken?" nuggets for kids, all which should be avoided. The best places to eat are around the Harbour, two places in specific being "Slow Boat 1" (NOT Slow Boat 2 on the main drag, it’s terrible" and the cafe on Waikiki Beach (Which I think is called the "Cortini") is excellent. The fresh flame grilled fish there is out of this world.
All restraunts will make food for the kids, even if they don’t advertise it. Just keep away from the places to eat on the main road in to town as they are all pretty bad (Apart from La Tasca, which was nice).
The Island on the whole is beautiful. Any holiday here on this island should start with booking the Oasis Papagayo. 10/10.

The hotel was very clean and the accommodation was very good however everything in the complex is geared around Germans . With us being all inclusive this proved to be very disappointing all the entertainment was in German and the food was not appealing , this also included the restaurant that reminded myself of a school cookhouse from then on we ate out which proved that to go all inclusive was not a good idea.

Fortunately we don’t have children because the children of other holidaymakers found that again all children’s entertainment was in German, which was not great for children . All in all this has put us off wasting our money on going all inclusive and we wont take the word of a travel agent again who assured us that it was British orientated .

" I am not sure which Hotel the other... "

I am not sure which Hotel the other reviewer went to, but it seems to me that it was not the Oasis Papagayo.
There is one draw back to this hotel and that is the 1.5km to the beach, which is easily overcome by taxi service that costs 2Euro to the beach in Corralejo. This beach is small and is not really used. The main beach is Flag beach which is easily accessed from Papagayo via the bus (1 Euro) or a taxi (6 Euro).
The Hotel itself is incredibly clean and the rooms are huge. There are three excellent pools and a wide variety of entertainment in the evening.
I have two girls aged 3 and 6 and they loved it. The Kids club (Which is entirely in English with English staff) is provided by Thompson and is fantastic. There were other people at the hotel who had not booked through Thompson and they did not have a kids club at all and were not invited to join Thompson’s.
The staff are excellent, the new restraints and shops right next door are first class.
The food in the hotel looked a bit gammy, but the Self Serve Breakfast is excellent and only 5Euro. The building work around the hotel is not a problem at all. The people who talk of dust, have you ever been to this Island before, the whole place is covered in dust.
Holiday was top rate, Papagayo made stay fantastic. (Don’t bother hiring a telly, costs about £20 a week and is only news and information).

I've just discovered this site and thought it necessary to add a review of my own.
I spent one week at Papagayo with my family and we be thrilled to return there. The children's entertainer (Cisco) kept my brother and I active for most of the holiday with various sports, water polo, volley ball, basket ball. We met loads of new people that I still stay in touch with.
The pool is absolutely gorgeous and is hardly ever busy, giving you your own space to relax.
Its a five minute walk into town, if that. And two minutes away from the local water park.
The apartments have a wonderful view from the back and have a small patio where you can sit and eat your lunch. Meals were fantastic ranging from the proper full English breakfast we all know and love; to delicious Spanish cuisine!
There’s also a bowling alley and pub where all the big football matches can be viewed on big screen!
All in all it was an amazing place to stay and I look forward to returning again next year!

If you don’t leave the complex all holiday then the building work isn’t a problem - its not noisy but some rooms (like ours) further from reception faced out onto it. The complex is huge so best advice would be try to get a room close to reception so you don’t see the cranes.
The location is poor - we travelled with 2 children under 2 and parts of the path into town opposite were rubble and pipes which made pushing the double buggy really difficult. Next door is a fantastic ice cream parlour and a terribly overpriced supermarket. Because of the remote location you are left reliant on this for supplies like water. If travelling with older children or without them the location would be alright but not for a young family. Its an uphill walk from town which takes a good 15 minutes (less if you are really fit or are running) on a narrow path.
We took a taxi to the sand dunes which was only 4 euros and was the highlight of the trip. Reception staff were pleasant but at night they were unwilling to help, especially if you ring them up as they frequently said that just one person was on duty and no-one could help. A complex the size of the Papagayo and no staff? Clever. If you arrive at night like us (11pm) there’s a big queue to check in so best advice is jump off the coach and run to reception to beat the queues (something you don’t want on holiday).
The TV hire was expensive at 30 euros for a week, otherwise you just got basic channels (CNN, Italian channels etc).
Room cleanliness was a bit dodgy - there were cobwebs around the living room dresser and dried blood splashed up the bathroom door. The cleaners worked hard but didn’t have enough time to clean each room really well.
We travelled in late August/September and there were loads of Italian visitors - their naff equivalent of Superfamily called Volando was unbearable (and yet really funny watching shell suit-wearing entertainers drum-up enthusiasm).
I think our holiday was a bit spoiled by the 17 hour 22 minute delay on the return home, but Thomson did a great job arranging overnight accommodation with minimal delay in Caleta - the Barcelo Club el Castillo which First Choice and Cosmos go to (and its better than the Papagayo).
I wouldn’t return as we don’t tend to stay round the pool all week. The island is beautiful and there are better located hotels and apartments to enjoy this island.
