Firstly this is not in my view a 4* hotel. The food is 3* at best actually no it's 2* food. I feel ill just thinking about it. I had the upgraded room which was fine and I was happy with this. The pool is small but ok as is the bar. It's right next to the Yumbo centre and... more

Room: Ok-ish, for a 4* hotel, the room wasn't very spacious and there was only two English channels out of 40 on the TV (if you can understand German, you'll have a lot more choice!). Cleanliness: The maid serviced the room everyday making the beds and empty bins. Towels... more

Fabulous
Got back yesterday from a 2 week stay at the Neptuno and were a tad concerned as amongst the largely favourable reviews there were a couple of commentators who made me frown a tad about what we were in for. Noise?? Dirty poky rooms?? Unfriendly staff?? Awful buffet?? Well we loved it. The hotel is probably deserving of a 4 star rating in all but a couple of minor details, which I shall draw on later. The Neptuno inhabits a very central location so all the local amenities are close at hand, just about anywhere in resort was within a 15 minute walk, beaches included. The hotel has 170 or so rooms and during our stay I would say it was around half full. The majority of the guests are from the European mainland so very few other Brits, which suited us fine. It is also G-ay friendly so around 2 thirds of the guests were g-ay couples, again this suited us fine, we're a "normal" married couple but like to think were open-minded. The location, although right next to the Yumbo Centre (Mecca for drag-queen lovers everywhere) there was no noise pollution caused atall and I would have to say during the daytime it was as peaceful as you could possibly imagine. The pool area has a plentiful supply of sunbeds and you have towels and mats provided in your room specifically for the sunbeds so don't bother with your beachtowels, bring those extra clothes!! There was no sign of sunbed reserving until the last day when one english couple thought it necessary, but there are so many beds it's pointless. The rooms are a little small and they are in need of a lick of paint but aside from that, great aircon and a lovely shower, plenty of cupboard space, we were happy. I would say the rooms are 3 star. The maid service (about which some complained) was faultless, best I've ever experienced. Beds and towels changed every day and they usually also tidy your stuff up, which when you are a scruff like me can be a tad embarrassing! The buffet is varied and plentiful and the same foods weren't offered twice during our two week stay, the majority of guests are Continental Europeans so it must be quite hard to cater for all, some of the concontions are odd but on the whole the food is good, you need to eat out from time to time though for a change of scene. For dinner you are allocated a table on your first night which you keep for the duration of your stay. There are two sittings to choose from and I suggest if you don't like the look of your first table, ask for another! On terms of the food I would again say it was 3 star. Breakfast was lovely, 4 stars there! The service for us was great, but I always tip well and am polite and in a country where wages are low I suspect non-tippers won't received such great service, fact of life. There is also a snack bar between about 11 and 4 and the food is wonderful. Try the spanish potato omelette or the steak sandwich, fantastic. Once or twice a week they make a paella of barbecue by the pool and it's all lovely and most meals are between about 3 and 8 Euros depending on whether you want toasted sandwhiches or fresh steaks! The only member of staff who lets the side down works here by the way. The Oriental lady who waitresses the snack bar is miserable, sullen and practically throws your plates on the table at times. I did put it on my comments card and hopefully her managers will have a word with her! There is some day and evening entertainment in the hotel but it's pretty low key and not something we go on hols for so I can't really comment on the quality of it. Playa Del Ingles has no heart as such, rather it has numerous "Commercial Centres" that are shopping by day and partying by night. The friendliest is the Yumbo, and it's pretty huge, you can see it from most of the rooms as it's right behind the hotel. The Plaza Centre by the Kasbah is where you go for serious partying but prepare to be seriously hassled!! There are many more of these and we only went to about 6 of them, we quite liked the Annexo II down on the sand dunes as you can eat with a sea view. (Hollandse Glorie, best food we had in our 2 week stay, and what a gorgeous friendly waiter) The bus service is cheap, clean and reliable. Only a couple of Euros will take you to Aqualand (brilliant) and Palmitos Park (stunning Eco experience) The busy journey alone to Palmitos is unforgettable and I thoroughly recommend it for all, take plenty of high factor lotion, it's up in the mountains. Both experiences cost about 20 Euros for adults and around 15 for children but if you go to Aqualand first you'll get 25% off Palmitos Park. (I think it's only 15% if you do it the other way around) Go to Maspolomas dunes for a wonderful experience, if you like nude bathing as we do, head for the dunes between beach huts 6 and 8 where there are plenty of others. A final word goes to the two resident cats, love ya! All in all a fabulous holiday, faultless weather, some beautiful towns to visit on the island and a great hotel.
Great hotel but not accessible for prams
I stayed at the Neptuno Hotel in March 2007 as a last minute booking. Travelled with my two young children, age 3 and 1, two friends and their 4 year old. Unfortunately my husband could not travel due to work commitments. The hotel was beautiful. Staff were very helpful and friendly and room was compact but very clean. The balcony was a brick balcony so very safe for the children. Unfortunately there were steps everywhere! No ramps for prams or wheelchairs. Thankfully I had my friends with me who could help me up and down steps to the restaurant and up to the room, which was on the ground floor. However, my friend did come home with a sore back with all the lifting. This was the only downfall of the hotel. Everything else was great. Food was out of this world. Staff accommodated my one year old needing to eat at 5 p.m. and not waiting until 6.30 p.m. We were able to keep our room on on the last day no questions asked. We would definitely go back again. Thankfully we were half board as there was not a lot of choice of restaurants near by.
Fantastic - 1/2 a stone heavier!!!!
We have just returned from a week at the Neptuno. This hotel is absolutely fantastic. 5 ***** The service was excellent. Waiters were very attentive, cleaning sttaff did a great job in the room every day, making special touches by putting my daughter's cuddly toy on the pillow, some days she must have had to search the room looking for it but there it was every day waiting for her. The food was too good as I have said I think I must have put on about 1/2 stone. Very varied for a buffet style. We were travelling with children aged between 4 years and 14 months and the only negative point I have to make is that the hotel is not very wheel friendly be it either buggies or wheelchairs. Lots and lots of steps. A great childrens pool, not very deep and close by to seating areas. The hotel is great but the resort itself hasn't much to offer. And at this time of the year there wasn't an awful lot of entertainment in the hotel at night and nothing for children at all. Putting this aside we had a great time.
satisfied
Stayed at the hotel as part of a package with Airtours. Room was small but immaculately clean. Food in resaraunt was ok but not as good as other 4* hotels in Gran Canaria but the food in the poolside resteraunt was very good and very good value. Lots of gay visitors due to the proximity to the Yumbo centre but hotel is very 'straight'. Hotel built on uneven site which means there are lots of steps wherever you want to go.................unsuitable for the infirm.
fantastic hotel & location
Don&Nick hotel was clean, rooms clean and bright, food excellent coice and quality,15 min walk from the beach but is free bus provided, great location for us only a stagger away from the night life. fantastic for gay people as has great gay freindly community. the only bad point we had was the wait at the bar we recomend you order drinks at your table at meal times. will be back
A Very Pleasant Stay!!
We stayed in the Hotel Neptuno not really knowing what to expect and were thoroughly impressed! The rooms were very clean with everything you need for a wonderful stay. The location is just a 15 minute walk downhill to the beach or you can use the free shuttlebus. It is located right behind the Yumbo Centre, a complex full of great restaurants, bars, and shops. Our room pretty much faced it and although we had read previous reviews of noise, it wasn't noisy at all. The food was absolutely amazing... There was plenty of choice and everything was just so tempting (prepare to gain some weight!), the food at the pool bar was just as good. The restaurant staff were very friendly and always willing to help. Since we had the same table every night, we had the same waitress; she was so sweet! Practice your Spanish because a little goes a long way. Althought most staff speak English, a couple were struggling and our attempt at Spanish was very much appreciated. One of the only negatives we can think of was the bar staff. We didn't find them friendly at all and the service was very slow. Another small negative was the availiability of English tv. While we stayed, the majority of guests were German and as such, most of the tv stations on our in-room tv were from Germany. We didn't go on hoilday to sit in our room and watch tv, but it would have been nice for a relaxing evening or two. BBC and CNN were the only two we found. So, we would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a great holiday; eveything was perfect and we'll enjoy going back in May.
Fantastic hotel, lousy resort!
I booked this hotel through and online travel agent at the last minute for myself and a friend. I'd done my research online as usual and I'm so glad I did, given some of the alternative places to stay, which looked horrific! The Neptuno is a really lovely hotel with efficient but laid back staff. Lovely lobby, comfortable small bar, large restaurant and a decent-sized pool, which I imagine gets very, very busy when the hotel is full. We stayed on a half-board basis and the breakfast was huge with masses of choices from continental to Spanish-stylee eggs and bacon cooked to order! I ended up having the equivalent of three breakfasts each morning and skipping lunch which made the holiday even better value! Not an eyebrow was raised at my pigginess! Dinner was also buffet style with food cooked to order too. I'm not a fussy eater, but you did have to pick and choose a bit as the chefs seemed to kill the flavour of everything to appeal to an international palate. However, we never went hungry and for the price paid, the food was excellent value. Some authentic, simple, well-cooked Spanish food would have been lovely. The twin room we had was really nice with sizeable bathroom and balcony, with very comfortable beds and immaculate housekeeping. Be careful with your room allocation though. i saw some ground floor rooms which were at the back with no view of any kind and buried behind trees. Check out the towels folded into the shape of swans on arrival...I'm not joking...very camp! This hotel is right next to the Yumbo Centre, but there was NO noise whatsoever to disturb...day or night. Even though I'm gay, I loathed the Yumbo Centre..it was a total and utter dump and ended up avoiding it, although it might be slightly less freaky and desperate in high season with more people?!!! Three things made the holiday for me...the hotel, the fantastic clothing-optional dunes and beach at Maspalomas and the weather...lovely bright sunshine in December, although I believe it can rain solidly for days at that time of year too. Both of us agreed that we would happily return to this hotel at any time as it made the perfect, relaxed base for a holiday in Playa Del Ingles. If I return, I would choose to spend my free time in Maspalomas which seemed much less vulgar and had some lovely restaurants near the fab beach. I would totally recommend the Hotel Neptuno.
Excellent Hotel
We stayed at the Neptuno last July. Glad we didn't look at the reviews before we went as they might have put us off staying at this lovely hotel. The rooms are not be the biggest but they each have a lovely balcony and we were very happy with the servicing of the rooms. The food in the restaurant is really first class. We are frequent travellers and have never seem a better variety of dishes at dinner and the breakfast selection was equally as impressive. I agree that the waiters are a little abrupt but we could live with that (they are showing us to our tables not having dinner with us). Both the pool and surrounding area is kept in really excellent condition. It is South facing with ample sun beds. We had no trouble in getting one at any time of the day. The Yumbo Centre is very close by (which was great for us as a gay couple) but I can honestly say that at no point were we disturbed by the noise and it was great to have it so close by. A fairly equal split of Brits and guests from other european countries and a good few other gay couples. The beach is a 15 minute downhill walk away but the hotel offers a fairly frequent free bus service to the beach and to Maspalomas which is really useful (details available from reception). We very much enjoyed the Yumbo entertainment, particularly the Cafe La Belle Show Bar. Very professional show and great fun. A great holiday, made far more enjoyable through staying at a really good hotel.
Bad Bad attitudes!
We stayed at this hotel for 10 nights at the end of September 2006 on an all-Inclusive basis after booking online the week before. Rooms: Dirty and dated. Enough said. Pur room was over the kitchen so woke up to the smell of chip fat and garlic most mornings. Staff: Rude, unhelpful and general attitude stank. Made no effort to talk to anyone. Staff in Pool restaurant/bar were more pleasant than evening staff. Food: Bland, suited towards the non-english customers, little choice, strange 'sit at the same table every night' operation, rude staff, cramped. Nowhere near 4star standard AI. 2star at best. Drinks: Fine but having to sign everytime you got one got a little tedious. Have the management never heard of wristbands? Reception: The most pleasant staff in the hotel but rarely used. Entertainment: Very poor, nothing on during the day apart from shooting, nighttime consisted of a 10-question quiz. The girl who does the entertainment needs to get a proper job, she clearly didn't like the fact that on the night we joined in, she had to repeat everything in English for us. Pool: Small but refreshing. Shame it's next to the road. Location: Situated in hugely built-up area of Playa Del Ingles, but near to the nightlife if that's what you're looking for. Contrary to other reviews, little noise could be heard from the Yumbo at night in the Hotel. Half an hours walk from the Beach, which is then 10 minute walk to the sea. Very little to do in Playa other than nosy in the shops or sit and get drunk. Yumbo at night was great even when sometimes it felt like one big cruising-ground. Special mentions to Cafe La Belle and Rickys Cabaret Bar - a must for all! Lot of hassle from street vendors and staff from restaurants too. Not the greatest of holidays, spoilt mainly by the hotel. Fine if you just want somewhere to crash, but not worth the 4star status and prices.
Gran Canaria 2006
When we stayed at th Neptuno Hotel in playa de Ingles, we booked on a allocated on arrival basis. When we arrived at the hotel we were not dissappointed. As soon as we stepped through the doors we knew that this was going to be a brilliant hotel. The Good Things: The reception staff are brilliant helpful and always friendly. The pool and Terrace were brilliant with a slide All the guests really friendly with german, Dutch, Spanish and English all getting on nicely The maid service was brilliant, Baring in mind that our room had 3 young lads all who are probably the most untidyest people ever, the maid tidyed and changed the towels every day.( we left a 40 euro tip) the actual resort of playa de ingles is brillaint with lots of clubs with again lots of nationalities all having a great time. The bad Things. The waiters in the the restaurant were very bad mannared. The hotel is situated next to a gay district The entertainment around the hotel was scarse, i did not see any entertainment during the day. Street touts can be quite annoying. Overerall Great holiday will probably visit here again
