The holiday was fantastic! If you don't have a problem adventuring out for the day or in the evening then rent car and have a look around. 15mins to Mahon and its very easy to find your way around and to go looking for some of the best features of the island.
The apartments were ideal for our budget and taste, simple but with all the necessaries for being able to cook and relax and if we wanted to go out in the village only a 10min stroll to a couple of good restaurants.
The best dive center on the island with friendly and helpful staff over looks the platforms to sunbathe on and 15min stroll along the cliffs to Alcaufar where it is nice and relaxed.
The area has no beach so not ideal for children or families but great for couples who want a relaxing holiday without the noise. If this is not your taste then look to the bigger resorts for beaches and entertainment for teenagers and younger children.
We will be coming back again and again.

Absolutely great been going to S'Algar for twenty odd years always looked on these apartments as a bit like chalets, how wrong I was. We stayed for the first time last June and Sept and have been this June and are going next week. They are in the perfect position when you get the sea-view apartments.
We go as a couple but have the 2 bedrooms with ample space and kitchen equipment even though I don't use them as we out in the evening. S'Algar is a very quiet and safe resort so it is best to get a car and see what Menorca has to offer you.
Many visitors return year after year as we have been doing since 1981.

We were very disappointed about these apartments. First, we should have stayed in a nice apartment in Punta Prima. This was sold, so we had to go here. Then, we had to notice, that the standard was very low. Different important things were missing! For example a coffee-pot, toilet-brush, gas in the kitchen etc. The chattles were very worn out.
The cleaning of the apartment. was absolutely unacceptable. The bathroom was dirty for 3 weeks! The floor was not mopped for more than 1 week! The shower tray was not cleaned, only by me or my mother-in-law!
There was no beach near to the hotel, just swimming-steps at the cliff line. Our little daughter was unable to go into the sea there. With a little bit of wind, it was perilous because of high waves!
The next beach was 15 minutes away by car!
We surely will travel to Menorca again, but never again go to these apartments. It was nasty, dirty, uncomfortable and not child-friendly. Many other beaches are like a dream on Menorca, for example Macarella or Turqueta.

We returned to the Rafalet apartments after a 5 year gap, hoping that they would be as good second time round. We weren't disappointed - the resort is just the same - VERY quiet but ideal for a totally relaxing holiday - you just have to zone out and enjoy the tranquillity!
The apartments have been refurbished since our first visit and now have air conditioning which was fab. Our only gripe about the villa was that although there are now great showers, there is no bath, which is a pain with small children.
We travelled with our 13 year old twin boys and 3 year old daughter. There isn't much nightlife and perhaps some evening entertainment for the boy’s age group would have been good, but it feels like a very safe place to be with a family with hardly any cars around the resort.
The local restaurants are good quality although maybe a car-hire would be a good idea for another visit to allow more freedom try out restaurants in places like Binebeca. (Heard it's good there for evenings)
The hotels and pools at the resort have good facilities and the local beach at Alcaufar is a pleasant 15 minute walk away (over the rocks) or a bus ride away. Mahon is just a short bus ride away and a great day out.
We had a brilliant time and are hoping to get booked up again this year.

S`Algar Holiday Resort offers the opportunity for a relaxing holiday.
The facilities available at the adjacent S`Algar hotel are excellent. Residents staying at the Rafalet Apartments have full use of the superb pool, sun terrace, lounge and restaurant.
In fairness, with limited nightlife the resort will not be attractive to teenagers, but it is ideal for young families and couples.

Before I continue I have to make a couple of statements which will help clarify some of the points I make in this review:
1. A beach holiday is not normally my kind of holiday. I burn easily, get bored easily and generally find that lying around a pool is a waste of a good week or two in foreign climes.
2. I base all my gradings on the basis that this holiday was a cheap holiday so I am not going to judge a cheap packaged holiday with the same grades as I would judge a luxury one.
About Ourselves
Two Adults and Two Children aged 14 and 16.
The Island
A very beautiful island that largely remains unspoilt by the blight of large hotel complexes. Yes they are there but they are not as in your face as you would see on other islands or tourist resorts.
Roads are in good condition and well signposted. It is easy to get about in a car and it is pretty much an hours drive from one side of the island to the other.
The people are very friendly and much more approachable than I have found in other places such as turkey and corfu.
The weather was as you would expect pretty fantastic with just enough of a sea breeze every day to keep temperatures bearable.
My only reservation I would have was that I wasnt as impressed with the food as I thought i might be. There is plenty to choose from but the menu is pretty similar no matter where you go and the place does seem to have an unhealthy amount of pizza places.

The Resort
S'Algar despite allegedly being a former fishing village is pretty much a man made resort with two hotels dominating the area along with a good few appartments/studios which are all owned by the same group as the hotels.
The resort is kept immaculately clean with street cleaning, grass cutting and wall painting being carried out whether needed or not.
There is no beach at the resort but there is some bathing platforms with sunbeds (at a cost) and if you are a resident of the various appartments/hotels you can avail of the pools at the S'Algar and San Luis hotels.
Withing the resort there is a small market square area which is home to two restaurants; Il Pirata (which im afraid i never tried) and the Queen Regina (i think) which is pretty much an Italian styled restaurant which serves a relatively varied menu most of which seems to be of decent quality. There is also a small supermarket and a few small tourist shops. Nightlife wise this pretty much is confined to the San Luis hotel and the Dinky Bar which is a small bar located beside the Rafalet apartments and overlooking the sea and which opens in the evenings.
Being only 15 minutes from the airport it is an ideal location to base your holiday and is only a 10 minute car drive into Mahon and a 45 minute drive to Cuitadella if you want to venture further afield.
All in all a lovely resort despite its man made feel but only to be selected if you want a relaxing holiday.

The Apartments
The Rafelet Apartments are situated in 3 (i think) rows of 7 apartments overlooking the sea. If you get the front ones (as we did) you get a fantastic view to spend your mornings and evenings sipping your tea or something a little stronger.
The apartments are compact but more than adequate for a one or two week stay. There is the main living area with a sofa (which could probably be used as a bed, a table and four chairs and a television which only really has BBC world news and of interest to us Brits.
The kitchen is small but does unlike most med resort apartments come with a full 4 ring gas cooker. Pretty much all the implements and plates you require are provided but you dont get a kettle so you may have to resort to boiling some water in a pot if you are like us and like a cup of tea in the morning. There was ample supply of hot water so doing the dishes was never a chore.
The living room has air conditioning but to get the benefit of this in the night you will need to leave the bedroom doors open.
There are two bedrooms with two single beds which can be pushed together if needed. The are as comfortable as any bed i have slept in whilst on holiday in the med so take from that what you will.
The bathroom and toilet are very clean and more than adequate and the abundance of warm water means there is no need to fight to get in first.
Rooms where cleaned and changed twice during our 1 week holiday.

Summary
I great place for a holiday provided you are not looking for a lot of night life. If your kids are of the active variety the resort is ok but would suggest opting for the San Luis hotel which runs plenty of daily activities.
