Nice place shame about the food!
Just returned from a weeks holiday MAY 06. I looked at Trip Advisors reports on this holiday before booking this with Direct Holidays. The Hotel & staff are First class, however I would not advise a stay in May or October as the quality of the food doesn't even warrant a 2 star rating. I had to complain to the rep as I discovered moulding bread at breakfast time & I also had a conversation with a member of staff (who turned out to be the Hotel director) as to why the food was obviously cheap, lacking in choice & in one instance not cooked thorougly!! He astonishly explained that as people are not paying as much for their holidays in May & October that is why they don,t put on the choice that you would get if you stayed say in August. Also, the Spanish government contribute to the cost of sending their OAP,s on holidays in the off season months so the greater majority of guests are Spanish. This was noted particularily for the evening entertainment which was in Spanish then translated in English. I think its an absolute disgrace that you get different food at different times of the year depending on how much your holiday costs. Alot of the English Guests were OAP's who probably couldn't afford to or maybe wouldn't want to go on holiday in high season. I have made a formal complaint to the rep's manager in the resort & will be taking it up with the Travel company concerned
Brilliant Hotel - Would definitely go back!!!!
Me and my partner stayed in this Hotel in September 2004. What a great hotel. It was always clean and tidy - not only in our room, but elsewhere in the hotel. We were probably some of the youngest people in the hotel (our ages 26 and 31) as the guests were mostly around their mid-fifties, but we wanted a quiet holiday so it was ideal for us. There were plenty of sunbeds to choose from around the [salt water] swimming pool, which were free of charge and there were plenty of grounds around the hotel to walk around. There were 2 main "beach" areas which were accessed mainly from this hotel, which are the coves you usually find in the holiday brochures. The main cove area was directly under our hotel room and the view from our very private balcony was brilliant. (To anyone with children, be careful around the cove areas as they do not have any fences around them, and the edges of the hotel grounds only have small fences - you would need to constantly watch your children). The Hotel may not be suitable for older tourists or those with walking difficulties, as the steps to access the cove areas were rather steep even for us and quite slippy with cracked steps. The food in the Hotel was excellent - plenty of choice every day (although in our second week at the beginning of October, the selection slightly reduced as the season was drawing to an end, although there was still lots to choose from nevertheless). The only thing that spoiled the holiday (slightly) for us was that we had to table share with another couple in our first week at the Hotel. This was something we were somewhat prepared for through reviews we'd seen on Holidays-Exposed, although when we asked for a table of our own, the Head Waiter was only too happy to provide one, although we had to see him before each and every meal and had to sit at a different table for each meal thereafter until the end of our holiday. The table sharing problem was experienced by a lot of tourists - most seemingly English. There are 2 large bar areas in the hotel - one being a Lounge Bar and the other being where the entertainment was held - although we didn't visit either of these as we always went out of an evening to the bars down the main road. The main road where all the shops and bars are situated is about a 10-15 minute walk away, but it was such a pleasant walk it didn't feel that long. Over the fortnight we were there, every bar was showing either up to date episodes of Eastenders or Coronation Street, or DVDs of Peter Kay. About half way down the main road you will come across a "Shopping Bar" where there is a bouncy castle for the kids whilst the parents can sit outside the nearby bar - if you walk behind this Bar, you will come across a square which is surrounded by more bars. Entertainment is put on almost nightly within this square, (although if you stay for 2 weeks you may find the entertainment in the second week the same as the first), but it is somewhere to sit outside having a drink (or three). There is also a rather large supermarket and a few more shops along the road running parallel to the main road that I have already mentioned. If you keep walking down the main road from this Hotel, you will find a Burger King on your right, and if you keep walking even further, there is another cove area you will find where there is an actual bar on the beach (Tom Cruise "Cocktail" only without Tom Cruise sprung to mind). To walk from this Hotel the full length of the main road right down to where Burger King and this further cove was, took us about 20 minutes if that. Not a long walk at all. There is even a bus stop right outside the Hotel which takes you into Ciutadella, which was only about a 15-20 minute bus ride away. The buses were very regular and very clean. It is worth having a look around the Circular Shopping Centre near to - what seems to be known by the tourists - as the "John Travolta Statute" in the centre of the roundabout on the main road. The views of the resort are brilliant from the top - and the tobacco shop about half way up was the only one in the area to our knowledge. We spent most of our time in the "Cocktails & Dreams" bar(another "Cocktail" film reference) at the top of this Shopping Centre - the boys who ran it were very friendly and we could drink in the open air, overlooking the resort. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Almirante Farragut and would definitely go again. The only thing that would maybe make us hesitate would be if the table sharing is still in practice. Other than that, the weather was great, the food was great and the hotel was great - what more can you ask for when on holiday!
loved it one of the best especially for my mum
always very wary of reviews but booked for this hotel and got a great price late deal from direct holidays. Requested a sea view and high room before we went and on arriving late at night was disappointed to be looking at the car park. However in the morning when we opened the curtains we had a marvellous sea view and it was better to be on that side on the 4th floor than on the poolside as if you were on floors 1 - 3 then the restuarant would obscure your view. Spacious rooms with champage, olive oil chocolates and a greeting from the management. The food was excellent. My mum is very fussy and only likes plain food, every night the chef was there carving joints of meat or fish so you could have that with hot potoatoes or chips that were cooked all the way through and always piping hot. There was always spanish dishes, salads, and pasta, bolognaise, and plenty of sweets, something to suit all tastes. The emhasis being it was cooked properly and always hot. The entertaintment team were great day and night always inovolving everyone. The location is about 15 mins outside the main resort but the hotel has enough to keep you going. There is a pub Vincents just outside that has happy hour every night and entertainment twice a week and there are some nice local bars/come restuarants right outside the hotel. Plenty of sunbeds and always somewhere to get shade or sun, also a nice terrace area with seats for those who like to sit rather than lie down. Reasonable prices if you want to eat on the terrace. Overall a great hotel with friendly staff nice rooms great food and good entertainment. I will definitley take my mum back there who is a fit 77 year old, but likes plain food, a nice place to sit during the day and evening entertainment within the hotel. Only drawback for her was no bingo before the entertainment started!!
Fab Hotel
Myself, my husband, my sister in law (all in our 40's!) and my teenage daughter stayed at this wonderful hotel for two weeks. It was spotless, well run and the food was delicious! The staff were very helpful especially in the diningroom. Our table was reserved every day for breakfast and evening meal. The pools were beautiful, not cold (Aug)and the daytime entertainment for children and adults alike was really great fun. There was never a problem with obtaining sunbeds. The night time entertainment was very professionally organised and a big hit with everybody. The only downside of the hotel was that our rooms were very small and the single bed was too small. However, we got used to this. The hotel is definitely worth a visit! There is a safe cove for swimming beside the hotel - many steps down - not suitable for older people or toddlers. Swimming and diving in this cove is a great experience (except when the jelly fish take it over for a day here and there!). Its a fab place with plenty to do and the bus service is very reliable. We will definitely be returning to this hotel!
Had a super relaxing time
We have just returned from a week's holiday in Menorca at this super hotel. We first went there 16 years ago pre-children and have used this hotel as our first holiday abroad with the children. The food is super and plentiful. The staff friendly and helpful. We were expecting a family room containing a double and perhaps two put-up beds, but on arrival and checking into our room, we were pleasantly surprised. The room had four twin beds in and was quite spacious with a super bathroom and a double balcony on both sides, as it was on a corner. The view was breathtaking. As this was the last week of the season that we visited, quite a few of the shops in Cala n Forcat were closing for the winter and the hotel's childrens club had finished for the season. That didn't bother us, as we found plenty to do and enjoyed the simple things like fishing with a net in the clear sea and swimming in the hotel pool - although cold! All in all, we had a lovely relaxing week and would go back there again.
Reconsider if you have small children
Just returned from a week at the Almirante and I booked this hotel based on reviews from this site. Hotel : clean and run very efficiently with 3 pools (very cold though and not used by many as a result). Rooms clean and tidy as mentioned previous and when we had a problem with our air con it was sorted instantly. Food : Buffet offering excellent choice catering for wide range of tastes with fantastic salad selection and local dishes every night to go with excellent choice. Children have their own buffet with chips and pasta as a choice Staff : most helpful and freindly I have ever met Location : This is where I would be wary if you have small kids. Mine are 2 and 11 months and we had 2 prams so getting down to the "beach" was very tough as the hotel is perched on a clifftop with steep steps leading down to the sea. Small inlets is where you can get to the sea but these are surrounded by rock where you can dive in which is perfect for adults.
Excellent Hotel
My mother and I have just returned from a 7 night holiday at the hotel Almirante Farragut. The hotel, in a quieter area of Cala’n Forcat, is very well positioned on a headland with a few restaurants, shops and cafes on the doorstep. The centre is a little further along but no more than a 10 minute walk. The area is very flat for those with walking difficulties. There are several lovely sandy coves which are ideal for small children. The facilities within the resort centre are also well suited for little ones. Restaurants, shops, bars, cafes and supermarkets are also plentiful. The hotel is first class. Bedroom facilities include TV, fridge, hairdryer and ceiling fan. Towels are changed every day and bedding at least twice during the week. The hotel operates an Environmental Policy with baskets for paper, cans, bottles etc on each bedroom corridor. The public areas are extremely clean and well decorated depicting the standard of a 4 star hotel. The food was very, very good with lots of choice for all tastes. As for other reviews in respect of table sharing, I can report that this seems to have stopped for singes and couples as we were offered a table for two for breakfast and dinner on our very first day. This appeared to be the norm for all clients. Larger families were seated together on bigger tables. The Head Waiter and all of his staff were very pleasant and courteous at all times. The poolside bar and restaurant also offered good food at very reasonable prices. Evening entertainment was varied and enjoyable. The pool area was excellent with no need to place towels on sun beds at the crack of dawn! After a morning out, we found that sun beds and umbrellas were plentiful. The hotel offers a towel service for 15 Euros per person. This enables you to have a clean towel as often as you like and you get a full refund at the end of your stay. A safe can be rented for 12 Euros plus a 15 Euro deposit which is refundable. The hotel has its own day time entertainers who organise activities such as rifle shooting, crazy golf, volley ball, water aerobics etc. During our holiday we took the local bus to Cala’n Bosch and Ciudadella. Both places were very nice and well worth a visit. There is a market in Ciudadella every Friday and Saturday. There is a bus stop and public telephone directly outside of the hotel. A bus timetable is available from the hotel reception. To summarise, an excellent holiday in a very pretty setting. You won’t be disappointed.
Great holiday at first class hotel
We stayed at this hotel in July 04 and we found it a very clean, spacious and friendly hotel. The buffet style meals were delicious with a very wide choice - something for all tastes. The desserts were sumptious. We were in a party of four and we were allocated a table for the entire fortnight stay. We found this very good. There were plenty of sunbeds and patrons did not have to rush down at sunrise to reserve a sunbed. There was plenty of room on the sun terraces to select your place. The hotel was conveniently situated adjacent to a bus stop and buses were plentiful. The entertainment was of a professional standard - both for children and adults. We would certainly recommend this hotel for all ages. We intend to return!
Don't miss this excellent resort hotel
This is an astonishingly good resort hotel which I visited in Sept. An excellent mix of elegant & quieter bars & lively, fun informal social areas. quietly sited card tables, childrens' games areas (non intrusive) & internet access. The reception & public areas are equal to many higher star rated hotels. I congratulate the management & staff on being efficient, friendly & helpful.Beautiful grounds with spectacularly picturesque views, particularly overlooking the cove. In fact, the cove with its two small sandy beaches sloping gently into clear water is an ideal place to swim in safety for children & adults. Lots of fish (& a remarkably tame cormorant) for those with snorkels. The salt water swimming pool is attractive with loads of sunloungers available & the poolside lunches much better value than the local restaurants. Restaurant was amazing for a hotel of this type. A huge range of items made up one of the best buffets I have seen for a long time. If you are not able to enjoy the food in the hotel you would have to ask yourself if you should really be going abroad for your holidays! Nowhere is perfect & my only two very small niggles are 1) the single beds are a bit small and 2) It would have been nice to have been able to have requested the use of an iron & ironing board as is the norm in most non resort hotels. I have had to stay at hundreds of hotels (many excellent) over the years & this one really is terrific value for its type. Would love to re-visit
Very Impressive
My dad and I stayed at this hotel for a week in September (in fact I just got home a few days ago). I have to say that I was extremely pleased with the place. The pool is very attractive with amazing views of the ocean and the cove. It's saltwater but this didn't seem to matter as it was very clean and a nice temperature. We went halfboard with an impressive selection of cold meats, cheese, salads, hot food, english breakfast, etc available every mealtime. It can be hard to keep a buffet fresh and imaginative but they did a very good job. I even indulged in quail and chips one evening (!?!). No harm in experimenting! The room wasn't huge and the beds could have been slightly larger, but there was satalite tv, an excellent shower and bath, amazing views of the cove (request either seaview or cove view early to avoid disappointment) and the a/c was adjustable manually. A God send! The grounds of the hotel were shockingly well maintained, with meandering paths through pine trees across the top of the cove and around the cliff edge. There were pretty little diving/sunbathing platforms along the cliff edge (not dangerously high up) which were perfect for snorkelling from. The car park is ample and there is even a sweet little minature golf area! Finally, the staff were charming, well trained and attentive. The poolside BBQ is fantastic value compared to the local restaurants which were, on the whole, a rip off. The evening entertainment varied from wonderful to pretty dire. The outside entertainment brought into the hotel was excellent but the inhouse actors/dancers left a lot to be desired. However, this is a hotel we're talking about, not Carnegie Hall. I drove up and down Menorca and this was one of the nicest hotels I saw in one of the nicest resorts. I highly recommend it.
