Hotel is situated on the outskirts of a residential area of Alghero. There is a 20 minute walk into the old town where there are plenty of restaurants. Hotel Calabona is an old hotel based around a courtyard and visited by guests of all nationalities. Bedroom although clean... more

After a rather lengthy journey from Cagliari airport we arrived at Alghero late in the evening. This did not present a problem to the Hotel who treated us with great courtesy. The location of this Hotel is fine as it allows you a nice after dinner walk into the centre of... more

Sardinia is a wonderful place. Flew to Alghero with Ryanair, the only downside with Ryanair is the baggage allowance, especially for a two week holiday, apart from that, faultless. The Hotel Calabona is excellent. A 15-20 minute walk along the promenade takes you to the... more

really good
myself and a friend spent a long weekend at the Calabona. we found the staff to be pleasant and accomodating at all times. The room we had was large and airy and the view of the sea was fantastic. The breakfast had a good selection and restaurants in town (only 15 mins walk away along the seafront) were reasonably priced with great food. The pool was fantastic. There were many people older that us visiting the hotel but this meant evening noise was a minimum. the private beach is a bit of an over-sell - very small but the lovely fresh-water pool makes up for it
Good location with pool and small beach
Calabona is a very basic accommodation and expensive too. But this seems to be typical of Italian hotels. The pool is very nice and well attended to. The beach is very small but pretty. We asked for a room with a sea view and were not disappointed. Amazing views of the sea and wonderful sunsets every evening. We slept with the balcony doors open and could hear the sea. It's only a 10 - 15 minute walk into Alghero centre. A very pleasant safe walk and near the town are all the street sellers stalls which are interesting. Good location if you want to be able to walk to town and have a nice pool during the day.
why 4 stars?
I stayed in Hotel Calabona for 2 nights and I have to say that I don't understand why this is a 4 star hotel. It is quite nice and clean. It might have a swimming pool...but it's also not nicely maintained. My room had old furniture and was not nice at all. Small and dark, although with seaview. Breakfast was ok. Another thing that didn't impress me at all was the staff....didn't like them at all! Overall this is a decent hotel but definitively overpriced!
Great for swimming pool and private beach
I booked this hotel before looking at tripadvisor, so I went expecting the worst. We had a great time however, despite some of the hotel's flaws. The Calabona is best as a family holiday by the pool or by the small private beach. As some have stated parts of the hotel are in need of updating, but our bathroom was a modern re-fit and the large pool itself looks pretty modern too. What was good for us, two kids plus mum and dad, was getting a room on the ground floor with direct verandah access to the pool. Another point, do not be put off by the pics on the hotel website, it is not as naff as it looks.
Goodnight John Boy!
Having spent a fantastic holiday south of Olbia we booked in here for a couple of nights before returning home. We choose Alghero because of the cheap flights. The hotel was easy to find as we approached from the south, but we wouldn't return to stay. The view from the balcony of the sea was good, but the noise from other rooms was terrible. Someone sneezed and everyone shouted "Bless You!". The balconies had no privacy from the next room and the hotel was over run with Saga holidays. True, they ate in a separated part of the dining room, but they grabbed food as if they hadn't eaten for weeks at breakfast. The menu for dinner was not exciting so we found a wonderful restaurant and eat out both nights. The room was basic, had a fridge and nice towels, but the light looked as if it came out of the ark! Not what we expected for 4 star, but adequate for a couple of nights, thank goodness it wasn't for the whole holiday! The lifts were small, 2 of us and cases were a struggle! Alghero was an interesting town and we would go back but not to the Calabona!
Never again...
This hotel is situated about 15 mins walk from Alghero central. As in many hotels in Sardinia they hate tourists, they will put you in the worst rooms (which smell of sewage) and they will charge you through the nose for the privilage. The front desk staff are positively rude. On the surface the cleaners do a good job but my view is that they are cleaning things like windows everyday but not doing the things that matter. I never saw them actually change the bedding or cleaning the bathroom properly. The main thing to remember about Alghero is that all the locals absolutely loath the tourists and to that end, almost every place you go will treat you like dirt, whether it is openly as in many of the hotels or in an underhand way as in the restaurants where they will serve you any old rubbish that has been lying around for weeks and if they think of it, charge you a service charge of about 30%! Note that a lot of the restaurants have 2 halves, one for tourists and one for the Sardinians to dine away from them. Even the ones that don't are still operating an anti tourist policy. If you have any command of the Italian language, just listen to what they are saying about you / your food. If you are still incredulous about my very poor review of this hotel or Alghero, try visiting Alghero airport... one big joke on the tourists! I would not travel to Alghero or in fact anywhere in Sardinia again on the basis of this visit and would not recommend this hotel or the place to anyone.
Trapped in overpriced package holiday haven!
This hotel obviously caters to buses full of package holiday pensioners. I know this because out room looked out on all those buses in the hotel car park! I probably would have been all right with this hotel had I been paying the package holiday rates that the other guests were. But, admittedly, I booked at the last minute, and paid the full rate for what claimed to be a "4-star" hotel. The old, tired room we stayed in was at least a star and a half below that. For the pumped up price we paid, we at least expected our fixures to not be falling apart when we walked into our room. As the previous reviewer noted, this place is indeed stuck in a time warp, as nothing seems to have been updated for decades. On the positive side, the obvious attraction is the amazing sea view (if you can get a room with one), the pool area, and the friendly -- though not always helpful -- staff. Chalk this up to a lesson learned. Make sure the reviews on which you choose a hotel are not those package holidaymakers whose opinions are watered down by the fact they paid for a whole week what you got stuck paying per night!
Very pleased with the Calabona!
We have just come back from a week in Sardegna and found Alghero to be wonderful. The Hotel Calabona was very accomodating and convenient and the staff was extremely friendly and very helpful. We stayed in a room off of the pool deck with our own little terrace area. It was walking distance to the town center and about 20 minutes from the airport. The rooms were comfortable and especially suitable for children. Lunch was very, very good in a large tent-like structure overlooking the ocean. All in all, a very good experience and not overly pricey, which Sardegna can be. An outstanding food find: Il Pavone Restaurant on the main square in the town center....I wanted to keep going back to it since the food was phenomenal and the prices were reasonable. Some of the other restaurants were mediocre and truly ripping off tourists with menu prices like 68 Euros for a small lobster and really pushing this item.( Beware of menu prices that charge by weight instead of the fixed portion.) Second truly great food find was the Bar Monti's gelateria in Fertilia, (a suburb 5 km. from Alghero on the way to La Bombarde beach.) This ice cream should really be on the map of the most famous Italian ice cream, putting Giolitti's in Rome to shame! The owner there, Tizianna Monti, makes all of her own creations in the back room and is ever so modest about the finished product! We had to keep going back to it each day and were so sad to leave it! Try the pistaccio and banana!
Excellent Location
Welcome to the Hotel Calabona! We visited Sardinia a few weekends before the official tourist season opened. The rooms had an open airy feel. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the swimming pool and gave beautiful view of the ocean. We had a king size bed which was very comfortable. The hotel staff helped make the trip remarkable-some of the nicest I have encountered. Free parking right in front of the hotel which is very convenient when renting a car to drive up the beautiful coast. Location is ideal with easy access to walkways along the coast leading to bars and restaurants. We only had to use the car to make it to the top of the mountains along the coast. Well worth renting a car for. I will definatelystay here again on my next trip to Sardinia.
Fantastic pool
Hotel Calbona is an extremely clean and quiet hotel with exceptionally friendly staff. As other guests have explained it is very old fashioned and in need of a cosmetic update to justify its four star status. The swimming pool is a great feature and was much needed in the August heat. From the luxury of our balcony we were able to watch some the sunset and listen to the sea, a nice memory. I would recommend this hotel to people who enjoy peace and quiet and don't mind a 15-20 min walk into town every night. The breakfast is suffient if somewhat poor quality but enough to fill your tummy every morning. Me and my boyfriend are late 20's and most of the other guests were a fair bit older so not a good choice for party lovers.
