Calabona Hotel

Hotel is situated on the outskirts of a residential area of Alghero. There is a 20 minute walk into the old town where there are plenty of restaurants. Hotel Calabona is an old hotel based around a courtyard and visited by guests of all nationalities.
Bedroom although clean was old fashioned and looked out over sea and pool. MFI would be very proud of the furniture. Bathroom was clean and tidy but there was a raised step in the middle of the room. A hazard when getting up in the night.
Restaurant was in basement and did not overlook anything.
Breakfast was very basic. Do not expect egg and bacon. Only continental breakfast available. Evening meals are ordered at breakfast time and consist of salad, local fish and poor quality meat and two veg. Beware of the "mash get smash" potatoes and tin peas.
There are many steps in all public areas of the hotel.
Swimming pool is very clean and 25m in length. Pool is closed from 1pm till 3pm. 43 sun loungers are based around pool and only overlooks pool and hedge. No view of sea from pool. Beach area across road is very small.
Area of Alghero very nice but hotel was very disappointing. It was rated by hotel and holiday company as 4 star but in comparison to main land Italy of lake district and Sorrento would only struggle to reach a 3 star.

After a rather lengthy journey from Cagliari airport we arrived at Alghero late in the evening. This did not present a problem to the Hotel who treated us with great courtesy.
The location of this Hotel is fine as it allows you a nice after dinner walk into the centre of Alghero. The food throughout the holiday was of a very high standard accompanied by waiters of great charm. Sardinia is a beautiful island of an up-market quality but realistic prices.
A must out of the excursions is Lunch with the Shepherds a unique setting with great hospitality. A great holiday and an excellent Hotel well done Travelsphere.
