" Excellent "

We visited the Riu Negril in September 09 and all i can say to anyone who may be planning to go here....book now!!!!!!
We have been to Riu before in the Dominican where we have had great holidays so we were hopefull this would be as good and we were not dissapointed.
From the moment you arrive you welcomed and treated with a cocktail and your cases are moved to your room for you, from the moment you arrive you can relax.
The care and attention from the reception staff is excellent, the cleanliness of the rooms was superb, the room was cleaned every day, and i mean cleaned, swept, the bathroom cleaned, clean towels and always with a smile.
The block we were in was tidy and clean with maintenence constantly going on with guys touching up with paint-the place is spotless.
Food, always a area that is open for complaint- but you have to be so narrow minded not to be blown away with assortment of different dishes and every night has differnet theme,eg mexican, carribean, italian, etc. I say when you go away it is to try different cultures and foods and not to eat what you would every day at home and this is why some people complain because it is not what they are used to and how narrow minded is that, you have to try it if you don't like it try something else.
Entertainment- during the day, not that much going on but we did not go for this we went for a relaxing time but you can join in the arobics, or the dancing on the beach or the volleyball or water polo or beach soccer or just relax at the swim up bar in the pool.
In the evening the place comes alive, with live music every night and entertainment shows along with the beach parties the entertainment team do a great job and they just love you joining in with games they put on.
The beach---well i give this holiday 9 out of 10 and they lose the one point for the beach, not as good as i expected, don't get me wrong it is still beautifull but it is not like Dominican beaches, the sand is not as good and you have to be aware of sand flies but only in the evening, but i am being very picky here. The water is just fantastic, lie in the water and the fish swim around you, it is amazing.
We went in September (rainy season) and yes we did have rain so if you are thinking of this time, you will have wet times, mainly in the middle afternoon, but by evening it clears, but we also had beautifull sunny times where the sun is so hot it is hard to sit in it directly.
We did not do any trips as we had a little one with us and the journey times would have been to long for her, so we did some fishing with locals and some jet skiing, but the trips do look good but not cheap, but you can get cheaper if you talk to the local guys on the beach.
To sum up, This Riu Hotel delivers on all counts for me, excellent value for money, relaxation just begins as soon as you arrive, would i go again.... Yes Yes Yes.
Finally, i always book with Thomson as they have always delivered a good holiday, and once again, no complaints...well done Thomson, flights on time with no delays, transfers excellent and the coaches were clean and NEW. Rep was informative and helpfull.
Go on Book it- you'll love it.

" This holiday was the best I have ever... "

This holiday was the best I have ever been on! The staff were amazing and couldn’t help you enough and the fact you received a cocktail as soon as you walked through to the resort was fantastic.

The rooms were spotlessly clean and were clean and fresh everyday! As soon as you saw the beach it was a breathtaking sight. There was lots of activities to do like canoeing, peddle-boating, wind-surfing ect.

For dinner we spent most of our meals in the buffet and there was a wide variety of choice. Each night had a different theme. Alton was our star waiter!! Overall food was delicious!!!

After Dinner we usually spent our night watching whatever shows that were on which were absolutely amazing and the pre-shows hilarious!! All of the entertainers were fantastic and so friendly! Watch out for Spiderman as he's the coolest guy you will ever meet!

The drinks were to die for my favourite was the Pina colada & Strawberry Dacolac you've got to try them!

On the whole it was an amazing holiday and recommend it to everyone! I’m definitely going to try and come back again!!!

" Visited Jamaica for the first time in... "

Visited Jamaica for the first time in April 07. This hotel was everything we had expected it to be. All the staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to help you.

Hotel consists of 4 accommodation blocks, with block 4 being furthest away from the restaurants, pool, and bars etc. We were in block 4 which is a ten minute walk to centre of the complex but hey 'no problem' however, block 2 would be more convenient if there were young kids or elderly in your party.

The rooms were large and spacious, cleaned every day, maids even pick fresh flowers in the mornings to decorate the bedding with and bathrooms have his and hers sinks.

Minibar is a very big understate meant as it has full size optics which are filled up every 2 days along with the fridge full of beer, coke etc.

Cannot fault any of the restaurants, they all offer something different. You have to queue to book places in the Brazilian, Shadows steak house and Sir Andrew a la carte restaurant which is well worth it however queue early as there are a limited number of places available for each sitting.

Definitely visit the shadows steakhouse at lunch time and dinner as it is excellent.
Again staff in all the restaurants are all very helpful.

Tipping is included in the package price but staff excel in customer service and tips are always grateful received.

Didn't see much of the entertainment as we were always tired at night but the entertainment staff always had activities during the day and beach party at night should not be missed. You must try the jerk chicken from the beach hut!

Beaches and pools were excellent and were a great place to spend Easter Monday. Loved the pool which had a bar in the centre of it.

The beach is a private beach which is guarded by security staff to avoid you being pestered by 'looky-looky’.

There are women at the beach perimeter who offer to braid your hair, just smile, and walk on. You should give the jet ski's a try , they are not run by the hotel but men are always there just outside the private beaches perimeter and offer you a go for a reasonable price.

If planning to do any excursions book before you leave as it is a lot cheaper.

From Negril it takes 3hours to get to Dolphin cove and Dunns River falls so if you intend on doing these excursions which I highly recommend as they were both fantastic do them on the same day.

Rick's cafe is also another most - take a towel to jump in the sea from the cliffs ( ricks cafe tradition).

Overall Jamaica was a superb holiday and I am keen to return.

I was concerned about being bothered by the locals before I went but they didn’t bother you at all and all tour guides etc were very friendly.

Had a brilliant time and would recommend the RUI Negril to anyone. The ' No problem ' attitude is the best!!

" First impressions of this hotel is... "

First impressions of this hotel is wow the buildings are very impressive. All the buildings were spotless, painters touching up any unsightly areas, I know how the queen feels now, that the world smells of fresh paint!

The grounds were the same beautifully tended lawns and shrubs. The room was spacious spotless and with a bed the size that would do the playboy mansion proud.

The beach was raked clear every day and too was very nice the carved tree stumps giving a nice effect.

The themed restaurants were good the steak house good, a tip though, a rare steak at the steak house equates to nearly raw but other than that very nice.

The St Andrews al a carte, Very nice for a change of pace good food too! The Brazilian was good to a lot of different types of meat and very filling.

The main restaurants food was excellent with something for all, I would imagine, with a different selection every night. But one problem here is getting a table if you are dining later.

We went on a trip out, got to dinner at 20:15 not a cleared table to be had, we finished up sat at the tables outside after my wife set it for us. On another occasion I saw someone having to tip to get a clean table to dine at.

The entertainment staff were great always with a smile; they put on some ok shows too. There wasn’t much in the line of entertainment brought in from outside, there was last year in Mexico (Riu Yucatan) but as the hotel is a way away from anywhere that was understandable.

On the day we left the hotel they were building their own set from cardboard and silver paper for the night show themselves they worked there hearts out.

The prizes for the shows winners was always a small bottle of rum even for the kids shows courtesy of Margaritaville a club in Negril that the hotel staff promoted to presumably get you out from drinking at the hotel didn’t Riu provide any Riu prizes was this a cost cutting exercise?

During the day the lobby bar was excellent but the others and all of them on a night were different. The bars were the same as the restaurant tip and you got good service don’t and become tea total.

I know Jamaica is a poor country but isn’t it Riu`s job to look after the staffs remunerations it does state in their brochure all gratuities are included.

I know American people tip all the time but not all European people do. Don’t worry though even if you tip each drink you won’t spend much the lobby bar closed at 22:00 and the others at 0:00.

The disco was open till 2:00 in fact on one occasion the amount of bar staff in there had parity with the amount of guests (3). There were lots of European guests and most like to drink a bit later and socialize with each other. This is after all a European owned hotel so why close the bars so early? If closing the bars early is a new Riu policy to offset costs then I think it is a poor one, do the other Riu’s do this now?

One couple we met got a few drinks in before the bar closed and was told that they couldn’t drink them after 0:15 as the staff had to stack all the chairs away if they wanted a drink they had to return to their room; in fact they shut most of the lights out at that time every night.

If Riu paid as much attention to the upkeep of its guests wellbeing as it does to its premises it might generate and maintain a customer base but with this penny pinching, I doubt that will be the case.

This is the second Riu I have stayed at (the Riu Yucatan Mexico last year) we had a wonderful time there the people were great and looked after us very well as we looked after them for their efforts.

All in all we had a good time but we could have had a great time.

This will probably be the last holiday at a Riu for a while.

" A fantastic holiday!

A fantastic holiday!

Check in was really quick and efficient and you were met by happy chirpy staff who could not do enough for you. Bellboys transported luggage so you were given a rest from the start.

Take us dollars Jamaican not needed

Rooms were lovely and big and absolutely spotless, fridges well stocked and optics were great too.

Staff are all polite and helpful the no problem approach is second to none, we were totally relaxed whilst in Jamaica if only we could be this relaxed in the UK!

Food is great and plenty for all nationalities not repetitive at all.

Pool is spotless and does not smell of wee as some people have said we saw staff cleaning that pool early morning and late at night and they were taking samples at regular intervals during the day and charting them.

The only thing we found were a pain in the neck were the locals on the jet skis trying to get you to hire them, but once they saw the security guards on the beach they took off a bit rapid, the police were also keeping an eye on them too.

My children loved Jamaica ages 12/8/2 nice shallow water for them to play in and the fish sanctuary really appealed to them our room was opposite it so that was a daily visit for us.

We have been to Riu Hotel in Dominican republic too and we got the same service levels in both hotels treated like royalty. I would have no problem recommending both hotels to anyone. Take no notice of the negativity go you will have a fantastic time whether at the Riu Negril Jamaica or (meringue in Dom rep)

No problem mon!

" We arrived on the 23rd march 2006 for... "

We arrived on the 23rd march 2006 for a two week stay, fell in love with the place the people in general, this was our first time in the Caribbean special comments from the friendly bin man, Kenny on the beach, Paul the singer, Patrice in the resteraunt, the entertainers, reception & even the guy who climbed up onto the bar roof to paint it only to find he had been given the wrong colour?

No problem, what an attitude great! That is what we took home on the 6th April 2006 so much so were back at the same hotel on the 25th May for another two weeks looking forward to "get amongst them " ye mon.

My only downer on this experience was the second week the "yanks "arrived in force for their "four day " vacations tipping everything in sight? I don’t mind tipping but when your holiday in paradise is "dampened" shall we say by a weakening dollar there is a time and a place for everything not when you’re stood three deep at the bar! Trying to buy your way to the front.

That is about it apart from if you haven’t been don’t wait any longer get booked.

" We've just spent a fantastic week at... "

We've just spent a fantastic week at the Riu Negril. Unlike previous reviews there were hardly any kids there when we went (first week May), which was great. In fact, the hotel didn't appear to be full so there were no queues in the restaurant and plenty of sun beds on the beach for all.

We found the food great - but I could see that it would probably get a bit repetitive if you were there for 2 weeks. There was a fab choice of Jamaican cuisine which meant you didn't feel the need to eat outside the hotel in order to experience the 'real Jamaica' food-wise. Also, we didn't bother queuing to book any of the specialty restaurants - we'd heard that the same food was available in the main buffet-style restaurant - and that certainly appeared to be the case.

The beach was lovely and clean, as was the water. We didn't experience any sand fleas - in fact there were hardly any creepy crawlies at all - you get more in the UK!

I agree that you don't need Jamaican dollars - but rather annoyingly the hotel will only change your traveler cheques into Jamaican money - which means that you have to spend all your time working out conversions as everything is priced in US$ (including the hotel shop, which I thought was a bit ironic!).

All in all I'd definitely recommend the country, the resort and the hotel!

" We have used the Riu chain before... "

We have used the Riu chain before when we went to Dominican Republic and although the Riu Negril was lovely, the service didn't live up to the standards we have seen in the past. It seemed an effort most of the time for the waiters/ waitresses to serve us.

On our previous holiday, seating in the restaurant was static for the whole fortnight - this meant that you could build up a rapport with your waiter and leave him a tip at the end of your stay. At the Negril, seating was a bit of a free for all and there seemed to be little organisation at mealtimes.

Booking into the 'posh' restaurants was a challenge. We were told to go and queue at about 8am and reserve a table for that evening. When we got there just before 8am, there was a queue right around the block and we weren't able to reserve a table for that evening. My advice to anyone wanting to book one of the nice meals, get up very early or camp out!!!

Last of the gripes - make sure you have loads of Mosquito repellent with Deet as this seems to be the only thing that stops them biting.

Right, moaning over - this is a fairly new hotel, the rooms are really nice and clean. There is a minibar in each room and if there is something that you would prefer in your bar that isn't there, tell reception and they will arrange for one of the optics to be changed.

The weeks we were there happened to be Spring Break for the American kids - we thought this might be a problem but they didn't usually surface until early afternoon and then got that hammered that they retired to their rooms again within a couple of hours!

The pools do get busy so my advice would be to go down to breakfast armed with your beach bag and sun cream etc -get your towels and bag your sun beds before you go for breakfast.

There are some good trips - we enjoyed the Half Moon Bay cruise best. We also did the trip to the waterfalls - it was a nice day out but it takes 3 hours in a rickety mini bus to get there. Unless you have a real burning desire to see them, I'd avoid it.

The shows were really good and you can tell that a lot of work goes into making them.

Finally, if you're with Thomson or Portland, I'd get a taxi back to the airport - the coaches didn't turn up as expected and the rep was as much use as a chocolate teapot!

" We holidayed in Negril, Jamaica... "

We holidayed in Negril, Jamaica December 15th - 30th 2005. Jamaica itself was excellent and would strongly recommend the island for a holiday, the Jamaican people were lovely although out of the complex they can be very pushy but you just need to be firm when saying NO and they soon move on.

Negril was lovely and we were relieved that we picked this resort, it was quiet and the beach was gorgeous apart from the sand fleas that bite when it was overcast or raining. Whilst on the island we visited Martha Brae river and had a ride on the bamboo rafts which was very relaxing then we went onto Ocho Rios to Dunns River Falls to climb the waterfall which was a 3 hour ride away in a rickety bus it was worth it when we got there but the journey did spoil the day.

We also visited Half Moon bay, which was out of this world, it was so nice and quiet and we had a picnic prepared by the family that have the bar.

The hotel RIU Negril was nice, it had only been open a year and a half so still very new and clean. the Food was nice but it did get a bit boring when they don't vary it so much. Luigi's is the best place to go for lunch. There was too many kids for us, as we do not have kids of our own, so found it hard when they were so many hanging around us.

The children have entertainment throughout the day (as well as adults) up until about 7 - 8pm then the adult entertainment begins, which I feel is the time for children to settle down and the adults have some fun but we found that the children were running around and hanging about in large groups which spoilt the adult entertainment because they shouted through it and were jumping up and down on seats. Once the adult entertainment starts I feel children should sit with their parents or go to bed.

Overall, an excellent holiday and would recommend both the island and the resort Negril, and the hotel if you have children if you do not have children, go to a couples only hotel, we will next time!

" Booked this looking for a relaxing... "

Booked this looking for a relaxing break and that’s exactly what we got!!
Only complaint we had was the weather, although we knew it was the rainy season.
Check in was the quickest and easiest I’ve ever experienced, staff were unbelievably helpful and friendly, room was lovely and right on the beach and maids did lovely arrangements with the towels every day! Food was great, especially breakfast. Very few children in the complex. Have beach instead of the pool (seemed to be worse there). If you can, go to Dunn’s Falls, and Dolphin Cove it was expensive recommended this holiday to others already.
Few helpful hints: don’t bother with Jamaican dollars, just take American, it's the currency everyone deals in. Take bug repellent if you''re prone to bites, would suggest going to the but something you wouldn’t forget! We loved the holiday and plan to go back, but not in the rainy season!
" I travelled with my 10 year old... "

I travelled with my 10 year old daughter on a last minute trip from Canada. I have visited Tobago, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua, Tortola, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands and Jamaica prior to this trip. This hotel was lovely-the buffet everyday featured fresh salads, the fish/meat selections varied daily and were cooked as required. As for sand fleas, I found most people were bit by mosquitoes. Why do people expect to travel and the climate/insects etc be similar to home...I have always found in the islands mosquitoes bite when the sun is not at its peak...in other words, if its cloudy, early am, evening (5:00) and the night, put on repellent. Yes in the Caribbean the foliage, insects and animals vary from that of North America-that’s why we travel away, right?

Expect to see geckos, wood newts and big bugs. No insect likes the cold so a/c keeps them away naturally. As for service, these people worked their backsides off while we were there-people even complained to staff about the weather...as though the staff had some effect on that. At any rate, my daughter had the freedom (because it is safe) to move about without constant supervision and make friends. The entertainment was fun-kept adults and kids entertained. The buffets had a variety of food-I never ate anything twice-my daughter who is fussy loved it. I have travelled considerably showing horses, skiing, and a variety of medical conferences and in my opinion, I have experienced discomfort in Canada/US as often as when travelling. I don’t go to the Caribbean for fine wine and gourmet meals...I go for culture, sun, nightlife, and beautiful beaches. If I was looking to ski, I certainly wouldn’t visit the desert.

Jamaica me happy!

" This was our second visit in two... "

This was our second visit in two years. Absolutely out of this world. First class staff offering first class service. Steve the manager runs a tight ship and is well liked by most if not all the employees. Dianne just one of the many bar staff is hilarious

Fantastic beach shallow warm water perfect for children learners or experienced swimmers. Good choice of meals and diners are well looked after. I could write a whole lot more but why not pay a visit and find out for yourself you wont find abetter deal anywhere else in the Caribbean

" Riu Negril was a big disappointment.... "

Riu Negril was a big disappointment. We went for our holidays during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays and the service was terrible.

First of all the hotel was full and the staff did not know how to deal with the people. The food was cold and old. We found that everyday we were eating same thing over and over again. The pool was dirty. The staff never cleaned the pool. At times the pool was so dirty that we could smell urine in the pool.

The pool was so dirty that when we came back home one of our family member even got fungus on their body from the dirty water in the pool. The worst of all were the sand fleece. No one told us that the beach had sand fleece. We were bitten and our legs were covered in red hives.

I do not recommend this resort. We have been to many places and this one has been the most expensive and the worst that we have been too.

" I had a really good time at club... "

I had a really good time at club hotel Riu. If you looking for a great hotel Club Riu is the one. The rooms were beautiful. They were nice and clean. I assume they are because it is fairly new hotel. It’s not a year old yet.

The beach was ok. I thought the water was a bit murky. They are men working on that so hopefully that would change soon. The pool was nice. Not to over crowded.

The drinks were good. Please try the blue ocean. It’s really good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was ok. I preferred to eat the pizza. Try the lasagne it’s really good. The had a variety which was good.

The entertainment was pretty good except for the guy who is the head of entertainment. Everything is good until he starts to speak and ruin everything. Hey maybe someone else would like him :) The disco is nice. You should go the Jungle which is a club there in Negril. It’s really nice. Oh and they is a guy there name Paul. OMG he can sing he is good. He usually works at night at the disco but now I hear he is working during the day now. So if you go there and you hear someone singing at the bar. Guaranteed its Paul. He a sweetie and he love to sing for couples. He also sings at weddings too. Ask the staff for him.
