No room at the Inn

I want to caution other travelers. We booked through a USA based company, had confirmation numbers and the Oasis didn't honor our reservations. After 12 hours of travel, tired and weary, they simply said that they had no room. We could use their pay phone to call the State side company but they could not help. They offered to relocate us at a resort at 4 times the rate we had agreed to pay there. Our shuttle driver stayed with us and suggested cheaper places. Just watch it if you think that you are going to stay there, you might not.

Beautiful beach, great snorkeling, friendly people and very accommodating. Do get the ocean front condos. It could impact the whole feel of your stay. They tried to put us in the E building but I knew from reading other reviews not to get those rooms. They're far from the beach and near the marsh and music. There is a nice big pool there however . Luckily there was a condo available and what a difference. You hear the water at night, can watch the beautiful sunrise from your balcony, no comparison. Food okay, good enough for us and our two 10 year olds nothing fancy but tasty. Lots of activities if you want-- arobic and marangi dance classes, volleyball, etc. The bikes they have are pretty bad- crooked handlebars, seats loose and very low air in the tires, but I did find one suitable for a short ride and it was fun. We loved the hammocks at the end of the pier! There is a Budget car desk in the lobby which was very convenient. Very safe, there are security guards out 24 hours. Good family place, we all loved it! The all inclusive factor was especially nice with a family, having all needed food and drink on site.
Beach was fantastic

My family and I stayed here for two days before being switched to another of the Oais resorts, because they had overbooked at Akumal. The beach was a real hit with the kids as there were many colorful fish right at their feet, so snorkeling was amazing. We found the food and room accommodations less than appealing, so we were willing to take the offer to switch to their supposedly 5 star resort 15 minutes away. The kids liked the beach at Akumal much better, and i would have to agree. However, the food and the rooms were much better at the other resort. So i guess its a matter of priorities and we would probably try a full weeks stay here another time to see if our opinion changed any about the food.
best vacation I ever had

I stayed at the hotel for 2 1/2 weeks. I was only suppose to stay for 1 1/2. Great rates. Lots of alcohol. Learned how to salsa dance from the wonderful entertainment staff. Juan pablo. He is a great dancer. The entertainment staff took us to clubs at night and La Playa Del carmen for shoping. There is plenty to do at the hotel. The beach is the one of the most relaxing beaches I have ever been on. I met people from all around the world, Ireland, Germany, canada, and italy. although the hotel seperates the italians, it does not matter because the side everyone else is on is better anyway. ( The italians are missing out). if you go soon say hi to juan pablo and vladamir for me!
safe and small

Just got back from Oasis Akumal, it was a as described and what I was looking for. Good beach, and quiet with not much to do at the hotel. Staff was great, and the place was small so you could see it all and I felt very safe walking around at night by myself. There was lots fo security even at both ends of the beach. The beach was great, you could walk quite a distance down past other resorts, or you could snorkel under the pier is good, or walk onto a washed out pier with coral, good to view stranded fish. The beach was clean and so was the room. We had a balcony overlooking the bar with music, and even tho I could hear the music all night it was excellent music mariachi and the other bands were great too. And the music stopped at 12. The food and drinks were average. This is a great place if you have kids particularly young teens, it is so small you can feel safe letting them go on their own, most of the staff will recognize them, and you also get to see the same people quite often. It is a cozy small safe place. I liked the location, very near Tulum many cenotes, Akumal, and other attractions. We took taxis on our own. This is not a deluxe hotel, but the size, and beach are plus. Some of the hotels we walked by had a rocky beach. If I could have stayed 2 weeks it would be like home.
Small and Friendly

I just returned. The Oasis Akumal was evertything I expected it to be. Most of the discussion here is accurate. It is very international. The Italians have there own arrangements, but you can intermingle. We had a beachfront room, just 20 yards from shore. The coral reef is the second largest in the world and makes for great snorkeling and calm waters. It does not appear very healthy, however, so you may want to see it now. The rooms are very clean, colorful and quaint. I could watch the ocean from everywhere in the room including the shower! The food is average mainly because the meat dishes are overcooked. The vegetables always have an interesting twist and the pasta dishes are good. Wine and coffee are barely palatable. There are two bars at night, one with entertainment. The entertainment is kind of hokey, but people are friendly and the drinks plentiful. Basically, this is a place to lie in the sun or swim. The size allows you to get to know people. The beach is beautiful and well maintained. The price is right. One note: There is not much in the way of town nearby, but the dive center up the road is pretty cool with a couple of restaurants. If you do go somewhere, feel free to take the local buses. They are cheap and clean vans. You can flag them down anywhere.
Can't Wait Until Next Year!!!

We just arrived back from two weeks in Akumal. If your looking for a quiet place away from the party of Cancun and do not mind a three star hotel, this is it. Excellent snorkeling leaving us no reason to go elsewhere to try our favorite hobby. Food and drinks good, deserts better. Service fantastic... Oasis employees, including the cleaning staff very professional and friendly. Beach side bar fantastico, especially the hamburgers. And Akumal is the perfect base camp to explore the rest of the country like Tulum and Cozumal. Beach tennis, volleyball, boccie ball, and all you can eat and drink, what else do you need for the perfect vacation. P.S. Pay the extra $20 for the beach front condo, the sound of the ocean lulling you to sleep everynight is worth it.
Great for bargain hunters!

This hotel (the Fodors description is not accurate) has a lovely beach, wonderfully friendly staff, very satisfactory food (not gourmet) and adequate facilities...and at $110/night (we purchased our stay through skyauction.com) its a heckuva bargain. (Rack rates were about double what we paid). If you want very decent accomodations (uncomfortable bed) and a budget price, you'll love this property. But if you want luxury and pampering, this may be the wrong choice. Our only complaint is that the front desk staff, except for manager Juan, was not very proactive in helping us with various needs. (We wanted a room away from the nighttime music; we were not told that there was a waiting list; just told to 'come back tomorrow' which delayed a room move by a couple days). Restaraunt staff is fabulous; the "Two Ricardos"--the supervisors--run a very service oriented staff. THe food is abundant and very decent...There are lots of activities and Marco, the supervisor, will keep you in stitches...Bring earplugs if you retire early as most rooms face the nighttime music. Lots of Europeans makes the guest population much more interesting, and, for me, appealling. I would return anytime I want budget travel.
Best vacation ever

We ended up at Oasis Akumal because the Oasis in Puerto Aventuras where we have a time share was closed for the week we wanted. Even though this was a very different experience, we loved it. The staff was friendly, the beach beautiful, our room was beautifully clean. Our 11-year-old daughter loved it too. The staff was very kind and friendly to her. The problems others have described - too many Italian oriented activities, some recycling of leftovers, and a laid-back attitude towards problem solving - were there, but somehow didn't seem to matter. A lot of the food was beautiful, especially the desserts and fresh fruits and vegetables. The entertainment every night was fun. This is a really good place for a family vacation.

We had a great time at the Oasis. The beach was beautiful and the people friendly and helpful. We especially liked the activities staff. The style of the Oasis is Mexican and colorful. Traditional blues and oranges are used along with pottery and metal urns. You knew you were not in the US, the Oasis does not look like some generic chain resort. Half the resort is Itlaian. Staying in our part were people from the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Canada, Poland, US and I think a few other countries. I enjoyed the mix of people from different countries. Everyone got along well and had fun together. All ages were there, some families with their children. There is plenty to do for every age. Getting around is easy. You just go out to the main road and get a bus/van (they come by every few minutes). We took one to Tulum, and Playa del Carman. From the Oasis, you can walk, ride a bike, take a taxi or even catch one of the buses to the town of Akumal. We went to the lagoon and went to the shops in Akumal. The shops in Akumal have some higher end local crafts, definitely worth checking them out.
Wonderful resort, wonderful staff, wonderful sea, wonderful rooms (even if you don't have a refrigerator in room), wonderful staff animation...
Nothing to object.
I would go again to...
